How much is unemployment benefits in Washington - confused about weekly amounts
I'm trying to figure out how much unemployment benefits I might get if I file a claim with Washington ESD. I've been working at a warehouse for about 18 months making $22/hour full time. My friend said it depends on your highest earning quarter but I don't really understand how they calculate it. Does anyone know what the current weekly benefit amounts are? I heard there's a minimum and maximum but can't find clear info on the Washington ESD website.

Washington ESD calculates your weekly benefit amount using your highest earning quarter from your base period. The formula is roughly your highest quarter divided by 26 weeks. For 2025, the minimum weekly benefit is $295 and the maximum is $999. If you were making $22/hour full time, you'd probably qualify for a decent amount depending on how long you worked at that wage.

•Thanks! So if I made around $11,400 in my best quarter that would be like $438 per week?

•That sounds about right, but Washington ESD has their own calculation method that might be slightly different. You can get an estimate by logging into your eServices account.

i think its like half your regular pay or something like that. when i was on unemployment last year i was getting around $400 a week but i was making more than you

•Did you have to wait long for your first payment? I keep hearing about adjudication delays.

•yeah took like 3 weeks because they had to verify my work history or whatever

The exact calculation depends on your base period earnings. Washington ESD looks at the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters before you file. If you need to check your claim status or have questions about your benefit amount, I'd recommend using Claimyr to get through to an actual agent. Their system at claimyr.com helped me connect when I couldn't get through the regular phone lines. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of Claimyr before. Is it legit? The Washington ESD phone system is pretty frustrating.

•Yeah it's legitimate. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked when I needed to talk to someone about my benefit calculation. Way better than sitting on hold for hours.

•I used something similar when my weekly claim got stuck. Sometimes you just need to talk to a real person to get answers.

Just remember you also have to meet the job search requirements to keep getting benefits. You need to make at least 3 job search activities per week and keep a log. The benefit amount doesn't matter if you get disqualified for not following the rules.

•Good point. What counts as a job search activity? Just applying for jobs?

•Applications, networking events, career fairs, informational interviews. There's a list on the WorkSourceWA website.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO CONFUSE PEOPLE! I spent weeks trying to figure out my benefit amount and they kept giving me different answers every time I called. Finally got it sorted but what a nightmare.

Ava Thompson
•That's exactly what I'm worried about. Did you eventually get the right amount?

Keisha Taylor
•Yes but only after filing an appeal and waiting another month. Make sure you save everything and document all your communications.

same boat here, trying to figure out if its worth filing or if i should just find another job quick

•You can file and still look for work. Actually you're required to actively search for work while receiving benefits.

•oh yeah true i forgot about that requirement

For what it's worth, the Washington ESD benefit calculator isn't always accurate online. When I had questions about my specific situation, Claimyr was really helpful for getting through to someone who could look at my actual account. Much easier than the regular phone system.

•I might try that if I can't figure it out through the website. How quickly were you able to get through?

•Usually within a few minutes instead of the hours I was spending on hold before. They handle the callback process so you don't have to sit there waiting.

Don't forget about taxes! Your unemployment benefits are taxable income so you might want to have them withhold taxes or set money aside.
0 coins
Ava Thompson
•Oh man I didn't even think about that. Can you have them take taxes out automatically?
0 coins
Paolo Marino
•Yes, there's an option to withhold 10% for federal taxes when you file your weekly claims.

my cousin got like $600 a week but she was making way more than minimum wage. really depends on your work history

•Yeah that makes sense. I'm hoping I qualify for at least $400 since I was making decent money.

One thing to keep in mind is that Washington ESD also has a waiting week, so you won't get paid for your first week of unemployment. Plan accordingly if money is tight.

Ava Thompson
•Wait, so even if I'm approved I don't get anything for the first week?
0 coins
CyberSiren
•Correct. The waiting week applies to everyone unless you're on standby status through your employer.

•That waiting week rule is so frustrating when you're already strapped for cash.

I was in a similar situation last year. Made about the same hourly wage and ended up getting $445 per week. The key is making sure all your employers are properly reported in the system.

Ava Thompson
•That's encouraging! Did you have any issues with adjudication or did it go smoothly?

Natasha Petrova
•Had a minor delay because one of my previous employers took forever to respond to Washington ESD's inquiry, but it got resolved.

just file already and see what happens. you can always appeal if the amount seems wrong

•True, I guess I'm overthinking it. Better to get the process started.

If you do run into any issues with your claim or benefit calculation, definitely consider using Claimyr. I've recommended it to several friends who were having trouble reaching Washington ESD agents. The service really streamlines the process of getting through to someone who can help.

•I'll keep that in mind. Hopefully I won't need it but good to know it's an option.

•I was skeptical about services like that but honestly anything is better than spending all day trying to get through on the phone.

Also remember you need to be able and available for work to keep getting benefits. If you have any restrictions on when you can work or what jobs you can take, make sure to report that accurately.

Ava Thompson
•Good reminder. I don't have any restrictions so that shouldn't be an issue.

The Washington ESD monetary determination letter will tell you exactly what your weekly benefit amount is once you file. That's the official document that matters, not any online estimates.
0 coins
Ava Thompson
•How long does it usually take to get that letter after filing?
0 coins
Malik Jackson
•Usually within a week or two if there are no complications with your claim.

i got confused about base period vs benefit year when i filed. make sure you understand the difference or youll be as lost as i was lol
0 coins
Ava Thompson
•What's the difference? I thought they were the same thing.

CyberSiren
•Base period is the time frame they use to calculate your benefits. Benefit year is how long you can potentially collect benefits (52 weeks).

Don't get discouraged if the process seems confusing at first. Washington ESD has gotten better at explaining things but there's still a learning curve.

•Thanks for the encouragement. I'm just trying to be prepared before I file.

Maximum benefit duration is 26 weeks for regular unemployment. Some people think its longer but that changed a few years ago.
0 coins
Ava Thompson
•26 weeks should be enough time to find something new. Hopefully I won't need all of it.

File as soon as you become unemployed. You can't get benefits for weeks before you actually file the claim, even if you were unemployed during those weeks.
0 coins
Ava Thompson
•That's important to know. I'll make sure to file right away if I lose my job.
0 coins
CyberSiren
•Exactly. The effective date of your claim is the Sunday of the week you file, not when you actually lost your job.
