How many hours to get unemployment benefits approved in Washington ESD?
I'm trying to figure out how long this whole process takes. Filed my unemployment claim with Washington ESD two weeks ago and still waiting. My friend said it took her forever but she filed during COVID so maybe things are different now? I worked full-time for 8 months at a restaurant before getting laid off. Just wondering what's normal for processing time these days and if there's anything I should be doing while I wait.

Processing times vary a lot depending on your situation. If it's a straightforward claim with no issues, usually 2-3 weeks. But if they need to verify anything or if there's an adjudication issue, it can take 4-6 weeks or longer. Did you get any confirmation emails or letters from Washington ESD after filing?

•Yeah I got the initial confirmation but nothing since then. My account just shows 'claim under review' with no other details.

•That's pretty normal for the first few weeks. The system is slow to update sometimes.

If you worked 8 months you should definitely qualify. Make sure you're filing your weekly claims even while waiting for approval - that's super important. I forgot to do that my first week and lost those benefits permanently.

•Oh good point! I have been doing the weekly claims but wasn't sure if I needed to since nothing was approved yet.

•Yes definitely keep doing them! You can't go back and claim weeks you missed.

Two weeks isn't that long honestly. Mine took almost a month and that was considered normal. The problem is when you can't get through to anyone to check what's happening. I spent hours calling the Washington ESD phone line with no luck.

•Same here - the phone system is impossible. I found this service called Claimyr that actually gets you through to real agents. Check out claimyr.com - they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Interesting, never heard of that. Does it actually work?

•Yeah it worked for me. I was able to talk to someone within a few days instead of calling for weeks on my own.

Restaurant work can sometimes cause delays if there are questions about tips or your exact hours. They might need to verify your wages with your employer. Did you report tips accurately on your application?

Ella Cofer
•I did my best to estimate the tips but it wasn't always consistent. Could that be causing the delay?

Mikayla Davison
•Possibly. They sometimes need to verify tip income with the employer, which can slow things down.

ugh the waiting is the worst part!! I'm in week 3 of waiting and getting so anxious about bills. Why does everything take so long with Washington ESD??

•I feel you! The uncertainty is killing me. At least we're not alone in this.

•Try to hang in there. Once it's approved you'll get back pay for all the weeks you waited.

For a standard claim like yours, 2-4 weeks is typical. Since you're at 2 weeks, I'd give it another week or two before getting concerned. The system has actually improved a lot since the pandemic days when people waited months. Keep filing your weekly claims and make sure you're doing job searches as required.

•Thanks for the realistic timeline. I wasn't sure if I should be worried yet or not.

•Yeah don't panic at 2 weeks. I got approved at exactly 3 weeks and got all my back pay.

Just went through this myself. Filed in early January and got approved after 18 days. No issues with my claim though - had been at the same job for 2 years before layoffs. The key is making sure all your info matches what your employer reports.

•18 days isn't bad! Did you have to do anything special or just wait?

•Just waited and kept filing weekly claims. Made sure to respond quickly to any emails or requests from Washington ESD.

The restaurant industry thing is real - they often have to verify wages more carefully because of cash tips and sometimes irregular scheduling. But 8 months of steady work should make you eligible for sure.

•Good to know it's not just me worrying about the restaurant aspect.

Pro tip: set up your eServices account if you haven't already. You can check your claim status and payment history there. Sometimes you'll see updates there before getting emails.

•I have the account but it's pretty basic info. Just shows my weekly claims and that the main claim is under review.

•That's normal at this stage. Once approved you'll see a lot more detail.

If you get to 4 weeks with no word, that's when I'd try calling. But honestly the phone system is so backed up that using something like Claimyr might be your best bet for actually reaching someone.

•What's Claimyr? Sounds like a service?

Two weeks is nothing lol. I waited 7 weeks for mine to get approved and that was just last year. The system is slow but it works eventually.

•7 weeks! That's terrifying. Was there a specific reason for the delay?

•They had to verify something with my previous employer. Took forever but got all my back pay.

Keep track of your job search activities too. Even while waiting for approval, you need to be able to show you're actively looking for work. Some people get caught off guard by this requirement.

•Yeah I've been applying places but should I be keeping a log or something?

Jasmine Hancock
•Yes definitely keep a log. Washington ESD can ask for proof of your job search activities at any time.

The waiting game is awful but try to stay positive. Most claims do get approved eventually if you're eligible. Just make sure you don't miss any deadlines or requests for info.

I work in HR and deal with unemployment claims regularly. Restaurant workers often have slightly longer processing times due to wage verification, but 8 months of steady employment should make you eligible. Be patient but persistent.

If you're really worried, you could try that Claimyr service I keep hearing about. My coworker used it and got through to Washington ESD right away when her claim was taking forever.

•I might look into that if I don't hear anything by next week. Thanks for the suggestion.
