How long until you can get unemployment approved in Washington ESD?
I just applied for unemployment benefits last week through the Washington ESD website and I'm wondering how long until you can get unemployment payments started? I lost my job at a manufacturing plant and bills are piling up fast. My claim shows as 'pending' on the SAW portal but there's no timeline given. Does anyone know the typical processing time for new claims? I'm getting really anxious about making rent next month.

Usually takes 2-3 weeks for regular UI claims to get approved if there are no issues with your application. Make sure you keep filing your weekly claims even while it's pending or you'll lose those weeks.

•Thanks! I've been doing the weekly claims religiously. Just nerve-wracking not knowing when the first payment will come through.

•yeah keep filing those weeklies no matter what, learned that the hard way

The processing time really depends on your specific situation. If Washington ESD needs to verify your employment history or if there are any red flags, it can take 4-6 weeks or longer. Manufacturing layoffs are usually straightforward though, so you should be on the faster end.

•That's reassuring. It was a clear layoff due to company downsizing, so hopefully no complications.

•Mine took 5 weeks because they had to verify my wages from a previous employer. It was torture waiting but eventually came through with back pay.

I had such a hard time getting through to Washington ESD to check on my claim status. Spent hours on hold just to get disconnected. Recently found this service called Claimyr that actually got me through to an agent in under 10 minutes. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ showing how it works. Totally worth it when you need answers about your claim.

•How much does that cost though? I'm already broke waiting for unemployment.

•It's way cheaper than missing work to sit on hold all day. Plus the peace of mind knowing your claim is processing correctly is priceless.

•Interesting, I've never heard of that service before. Might be useful for people who can't get through the normal way.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!! I've been waiting 7 WEEKS for my claim to be approved and Washington ESD just keeps saying 'under review' with no explanation. Meanwhile my savings are gone and I'm about to lose my apartment. This is ridiculous!

•Oh no, that's exactly what I'm afraid of. Did you try calling them?

•Called hundreds of times. Either busy signal or 2+ hour hold times. When I finally get through they just read me the same info I can see online.

•7 weeks sounds like your claim is in adjudication. That usually means they're investigating something specific about your separation or eligibility.

mine took exactly 18 days from application to first payment last year. wasn't too bad but those 18 days felt like forever when you're counting every dollar

•18 days doesn't sound too terrible. Was that with no complications?

•yeah pretty straightforward, just had to wait for them to process everything. the back pay was nice though

Just to clarify some terminology - when your claim shows 'pending' it means Washington ESD is still processing your initial application. This is different from 'adjudication' which happens when they need to investigate specific issues like job separation reasons or eligibility questions. Most straightforward layoff cases don't require adjudication.

•Good to know the difference. Mine just says pending so hopefully it stays that way.

•What if it goes to adjudication? How long does that take?

Emma Olsen
•Adjudication can take anywhere from 2-8 weeks depending on the complexity. They have to contact employers, review documentation, sometimes schedule phone interviews.

The waiting is the worst part. I kept checking my account multiple times a day like it was going to magically update. Pro tip: payments usually show up on Tuesday or Wednesday if you're approved, so don't stress if nothing hits your account on Monday.

•Thanks for the tip about payment days. I'll try to be patient and not check obsessively.

•I do the same thing! Check the portal like 5 times a day even though I know it won't change that fast.

Also make sure you're meeting the job search requirements even while your claim is pending. You need to be looking for work and keeping a log of your job search activities. They can ask for this information at any time.

•Good point. I've been applying to jobs but haven't been tracking it formally. Better start that log now.

•How many jobs do you have to apply to per week?

Makayla Shoemaker
•It varies but typically 3 job search activities per week. Can be applications, interviews, networking events, etc.

I'm in the same boat - filed 10 days ago and still pending. My friend said she used some service to get through to Washington ESD when she had questions. Let me find the name... oh yeah, Claimyr. She said it was super easy and they connected her to an actual person at ESD who could explain what was happening with her claim.

•That's the second time someone mentioned that service. Might be worth looking into if I get really stuck.

•I'm skeptical of any service that charges money for something that should be free.

•I get the skepticism, but sometimes you need to pay a little to save your sanity. My friend was about to have a breakdown from the stress of not knowing.

The whole thing is designed to make you give up. They make it as difficult as possible hoping you'll find a job before they have to pay you. Stay persistent and keep filing those weekly claims no matter what!

•I won't give up! Need these benefits too much to let bureaucracy stop me.

Quick question - do you get back pay for the weeks you were waiting? Like if it takes 3 weeks to approve, do you get paid for all 3 weeks or just going forward?
0 coins
Emma Olsen
•Yes, you get back pay for all the weeks you filed claims while waiting for approval, as long as you were eligible those weeks.

Mason Stone
•That's a relief! At least the waiting won't cost me those weeks of benefits.

I remember when I was laid off from Boeing a few years ago, took about 2.5 weeks to get approved. The key is making sure all your information is accurate when you apply. Any discrepancies can trigger additional review.

•I was super careful filling everything out. Double-checked all my employment dates and reasons for separation.

•Boeing layoffs are usually pretty clean since they're such a big employer. ESD probably processes those faster.

Just wanted to add - if you're getting really anxious about the timeline, try calling the customer service line early in the morning right when they open. I had better luck getting through around 8 AM.

•Good tip! I'll try calling first thing tomorrow morning.

•I tried that but still couldn't get through. The phone system is just overwhelmed.

•That's why I ended up using Claimyr. The regular phone lines are just too frustrating to deal with.

Been there! The uncertainty is killer when you're counting on that money. Just remember that most claims do get approved eventually if you were legitimately laid off. Hang in there!

One more thing - make sure you have direct deposit set up. Paper checks can add another week to getting your money. You can set it up through your SAW account if you haven't already.

Mason Stone
•Already got direct deposit set up, thankfully. Don't want any extra delays when the approval finally comes through.

•Smart move. I forgot to set that up initially and had to wait for paper checks for the first month.

The waiting game is brutal but try to stay positive. I know it's easier said than done when bills are due, but stressing about it won't make it go faster. Focus on your job search and try to stay busy.

Last piece of advice - if you do run into problems or your claim gets held up, don't be afraid to reach out for help. Whether that's calling ESD, using a service like Claimyr that others mentioned, or even contacting your state representative if things get really bad. You have options.

Mason Stone
•Good to know I have escalation options if needed. Hopefully it won't come to that, but it's reassuring to know.

•State reps can actually be really helpful with ESD issues. They have direct contacts there.
