How long does it take to hear back from Washington ESD unemployment claim?
Filed my initial unemployment claim with Washington ESD about 10 days ago and haven't heard anything back yet. My claim status just says 'pending' when I check online. Is this normal? How long should I expect to wait before getting some kind of response? I'm getting really anxious because I have bills coming due and need to know if my claim was approved or if there's something else I need to do.

It usually takes 2-3 weeks for Washington ESD to process initial claims. Mine took 18 days before I got my first determination letter.

•Thanks, that's a relief to know it's normal. I was worried something went wrong.

•Yeah the waiting is the worst part. Just keep filing your weekly claims even while it's pending.

Washington ESD typically takes 14-21 business days for initial claim determinations. If your claim requires adjudication for any reason, it can take 4-6 weeks or longer. Keep checking your SecureAccess Washington account for any requests for additional information.

•What would cause it to go to adjudication? I reported everything accurately when I filed.

•Common reasons include questions about your job separation, prior claims in other states, or if you worked for multiple employers. It's not necessarily because you did anything wrong.

•Mine went to adjudication because I had a brief temp job right before getting laid off. Added 3 extra weeks to the process.

I was in the same boat last month - couldn't get through to anyone at Washington ESD to check on my claim status. Finally found this service called Claimyr that helped me get connected to an actual agent. They have a website at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Got through in like 20 minutes instead of trying for hours.

•Really? That sounds too good to be true. How much does it cost?

•It was worth it for me - way less frustrating than calling over and over. The agent was able to tell me exactly where my claim stood and what was holding it up.

•I used Claimyr too when my claim got stuck. Super easy to use and saved me hours of busy signals.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS BROKEN! I've been waiting 5 WEEKS for my claim to be processed. Washington ESD doesn't care about people who actually need help!!

•I feel your frustration but yelling won't help. Have you tried contacting your state representative?

Peyton Clarke
•Yes I tried everything. Nobody responds. I'm about to lose my apartment.

•That's awful, I'm sorry you're going through this. Did you check if there are any outstanding issues on your claim that need to be addressed?

Make sure you're filing your weekly claims every week even while your initial claim is pending. If you miss weeks, you could lose benefits for those periods even after approval.

•Good point, I've been doing that. Just worried the whole thing will get denied for some reason.

•As long as you were laid off or terminated through no fault of your own and meet the work history requirements, you should be fine.

My claim took forever because I quit my job due to unsafe working conditions. Had to provide documentation and everything. Washington ESD has to investigate voluntary separations more thoroughly.

Tate Jensen
•That's correct - voluntary separations require adjudication to determine if there was good cause. Unsafe conditions can qualify as good cause if properly documented.

•Yeah it took 6 weeks total but I eventually got approved. Worth fighting for if you have a legitimate reason.

•What kind of documentation did you need? I'm in a similar situation with harassment at work.

•Have you checked your account for any messages or requests for information? Sometimes claims get delayed because they need additional docs.

•checked this morning, nothing there. just says pending still

•Might be worth using that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier to get through to someone who can tell you what's going on with your claim.

For those experiencing long delays, Washington ESD has been dealing with higher claim volumes. If your claim hasn't been processed within 21 business days, you should definitely try calling or using an alternative method to reach them for a status update.

•What's the best time to call? I tried a few times but always get busy signals.

Tate Jensen
•Early morning right when they open (8 AM) or during lunch hours tend to be better. But honestly, the phone system is overwhelmed most days.

•I've had luck calling right at 8 AM sharp. Takes persistence though.

My sister waited 4 weeks and then found out her claim was denied because of some issue with her previous employer. She had to appeal and that took another month. The system is so slow.

Avery Davis
•Oh no, what kind of issue? Now I'm worried my employer might say something to block my claim.

Tobias Lancaster
•They claimed she was fired for misconduct but it wasn't true. She won the appeal but it was a nightmare process.

•Employer disputes are unfortunately common. If you were laid off due to lack of work, you should be fine. If terminated, make sure you have documentation of the circumstances.

Been through this before - the waiting is brutal but most claims do get approved eventually. Just keep doing your weekly reports and hang in there.

Avery Davis
•How many times have you filed for unemployment? Is the process the same each time?

Ezra Beard
•Third time in 15 years. Process is similar but they've made some improvements to the online system. Still slow though.

Check if you need to complete WorkSource registration too. Some people get delayed because they haven't done the job search requirements setup.
0 coins
Avery Davis
•I did register with WorkSource when I filed. Do I need to do anything else with that?
0 coins
Statiia Aarssizan
•You'll need to do job search activities once your claim is approved. For now just make sure your registration is complete.

Marcelle Drum
•Yeah they require 3 job search contacts per week once you start receiving benefits. Worth getting familiar with the WorkSource system now.

•That's about 3 weeks which is on the longer side but still within normal range unfortunately.

Pro tip: if you need to reach Washington ESD urgently, try the Claimyr service mentioned earlier. I was skeptical at first but it actually worked. Got connected to an agent who explained exactly why my claim was taking so long (they were waiting for wage verification from an out-of-state employer).
0 coins
Avery Davis
•Did they charge you to use it? I'm already tight on money and can't afford extra fees.
0 coins
Aria Khan
•There is a fee but for me it was worth it to get answers instead of wondering for weeks. Check their website for current pricing.

•Used it last week too - worked exactly like they showed in their demo video. Finally got some real information about my claim status.

Washington ESD used to be faster pre-COVID but they're still dealing with backlogs and staffing issues. 2-3 weeks is pretty standard now unfortunately.
0 coins
Avery Davis
•That makes sense I guess. Just wish they would communicate better about timelines.

Sunny Wang
•Agreed, a simple status update system would help reduce anxiety for everyone waiting.

I work part-time at a temp agency and see people going through this all the time. Most claims get approved within 3 weeks unless there's an issue that needs investigation. Just gotta be patient.
0 coins
Avery Davis
•Do you see any common reasons why claims get delayed or denied?
0 coins
Hugh Intensity
•Usually job separation issues, wage discrepancies, or people who haven't worked enough quarters to qualify. If you were clearly laid off and have recent work history you should be fine.

took me exactly 16 business days to hear back. got my determination letter on a tuesday. yours will come soon.

The uncertainty is the worst part. I refreshed my account like 50 times a day when I was waiting. Try to stay busy with job applications if you can.
0 coins
Avery Davis
•Yeah I need to start applying places anyway. Might as well use this waiting time productively.
0 coins
Melissa Lin
•Exactly! And keep track of your applications because you'll need to report job search activities once benefits start.

Marcelle Drum
•Good advice. The job search requirement kicks in right away so better to get ahead of it.

UPDATE: Just wanted to thank everyone for the advice. Got my determination letter today (day 19) and was approved! Benefits start next week. To the others still waiting - hang in there, it really does come through eventually.
