How long does it take to get approved unemployment benefits in Washington?
Filed my initial claim with Washington ESD about 10 days ago and still haven't heard anything back. My account just shows 'pending' status and I'm starting to get worried about my bills. I submitted all the required documents and did the identity verification through ID.me. How long should I expect to wait before my claim gets approved? Is 10 days normal or should I be concerned something went wrong?

Typical processing time is 2-3 weeks for a straightforward claim. If you have any issues that need adjudication (like job separation reasons or work availability questions), it can take 4-6 weeks or even longer.

•Thanks for the info. I was laid off due to company downsizing so hopefully that's straightforward enough.

•Layoffs are usually pretty quick to process unless there are questions about your work history or wages.

10 days is still within normal range. I had to wait almost 3 weeks before mine got approved last year. The key is making sure you keep filing your weekly claims even while it's pending.

•I've been doing my weekly claims but they all show $0. Is that normal while pending?

Kayla Morgan
•Yes, that's totally normal. Once approved, you'll get back pay for all those weeks you filed.

If you're having trouble getting through to check on your claim status, I found this service called Claimyr that actually got me connected to a Washington ESD agent in minutes. Way better than sitting on hold for hours. Check out claimyr.com and they have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•How much does that cost? I'm already struggling financially waiting for my benefits.

•It's worth checking out their site for details, but honestly getting through to resolve issues quickly saved me weeks of waiting and stress.

•Sounds too good to be true. Why would I pay someone when I can just call myself?

Mine took 6 weeks because they had questions about my previous employer. Washington ESD sent me a letter asking for more documentation and I had to submit pay stubs and termination paperwork.

•Did you get any notification that they needed more info or did the letter just show up?

•I got a letter in the mail but it also showed up in my eServices account as a correspondence item.

Check your eServices account regularly for any correspondence. Sometimes they need additional information and if you don't respond quickly, it can delay your claim even more. Also make sure your mailing address is correct in case they send physical letters.

•Good point, I'll double check my address. I moved recently and want to make sure everything is up to date.

•Definitely update your address ASAP. Friend of mine missed important letters because of an old address.

I'm on week 4 of waiting and getting really anxious. Called Washington ESD probably 50 times and either get busy signal or disconnected after waiting on hold. This is ridiculous.

•The phone system is definitely frustrating. Early morning calls around 8am tend to have better luck.

•This is exactly why I mentioned Claimyr earlier. I was in the same boat making endless calls until someone told me about it.

Washington ESD is processing a lot of claims right now so delays are pretty common. As long as you keep filing your weekly claims and respond to any requests for information promptly, you should be fine.

•What happens if I miss a weekly claim while waiting for approval?

•You can usually file a late claim but it's better to stay current. Missing weeks can complicate things.

The whole system is broken. They make you jump through hoops and then take forever to process anything. Meanwhile bills keep coming.

•I feel you on that. Had to borrow money from family while waiting for my claim to process.

•It's frustrating but try to stay patient. Most claims do get approved eventually if you meet the requirements.

Make sure you didn't make any mistakes on your application that could trigger adjudication. Things like incorrect dates, wage amounts, or reasons for separation can cause delays.

•I tried to be really careful but now I'm second guessing everything. Is there a way to check what might be holding it up?

•Your eServices account should show if there are any outstanding issues or if it's just in normal processing queue.

2-3 weeks is typical but can be longer if they need to verify your employment history with previous employers. Sometimes employers are slow to respond to Washington ESD requests.

•My company went out of business, could that complicate things?

•It might take longer to verify your wages and employment, but it shouldn't prevent approval. Washington ESD has ways to verify through state records.

Don't panic at 10 days. I've seen people get approved anywhere from 2-8 weeks depending on their situation. The important thing is to keep filing weekly claims and respond to any requests immediately.

•Been there. The waiting is the worst part but hang in there.

I used to work at a temp agency and saw lots of UI claims. Straightforward layoffs usually process in 2-3 weeks, but anything involving job separation disputes, availability issues, or wage discrepancies can take much longer.

•That's helpful insight. Hopefully being laid off keeps things simple.

•Layoffs are definitely the easiest type of claim to process from Washington ESD's perspective.

If you're really concerned about the delay, you might want to try reaching out to Washington ESD directly. I know calling is frustrating but sometimes you can get answers about what's holding up your claim.

•This is where that Claimyr service I mentioned earlier really helps. Saved me so much time and frustration trying to get through on my own.

Keep an eye on your claim status in eServices. It should show if it moves from 'pending' to 'under review' or 'adjudication in progress' which would indicate they're actively working on it.

Leo Simmons
•Still just shows pending. Is that good or bad?

Jabari-Jo
•Pending just means it's in the processing queue. Once they start reviewing it, the status will change.

My claim took exactly 3 weeks to get approved. No issues, just standard processing time. The back pay was worth the wait when it finally came through.
0 coins
Leo Simmons
•That gives me hope. Did you get the full back pay for all the weeks you filed while waiting?

Kristin Frank
•Yes, got paid for every week I filed during the waiting period. Just make sure you don't miss any weekly claims.

Washington ESD has been pretty backed up lately. I'd say 10 days is still early, give it another week or two before getting too worried. Just keep doing your weekly claims and checking for any correspondence.

For what it's worth, I've heard processing times have improved recently compared to the chaos during the pandemic. 2-4 weeks seems to be the current normal range.

•Definitely better than the 8-12 week waits people were seeing in 2020-2021.

•Still too long when you're waiting for money to pay rent and groceries though.

Just remember that once approved, you'll get all the back pay for the weeks you've been filing. So even though it's stressful waiting, you won't lose any benefits as long as you keep filing weekly.

•That's really good to know. I was worried I might lose some weeks by waiting too long.

•Nope, as long as you file each week while pending, you'll get paid for all of them once approved.

If anyone needs help getting through to Washington ESD about claim status, I had success with Claimyr too. Much easier than the endless busy signals and hold times. Really helped me get answers when I was stuck waiting.

Bottom line: 10 days is normal, 2-3 weeks is typical, and 4+ weeks means there might be an issue that needs attention. Keep filing weekly and stay on top of any correspondence from Washington ESD.
