In Washington, regular unemployment insurance (UI) benefits last up to 26 weeks maximum. However, the actual duration depends on your work history and earnings during your base period. Washington ESD calculates this based on your quarterly earnings from the last 5 completed quarters before you filed your claim.

•thanks, so its not automatic 26 weeks for everyone?

•Correct - it's based on your earnings history. If you worked consistently with decent wages, you'll likely get closer to the full 26 weeks. If your work history is spotty, it could be less.

I'm going through the same thing right now and honestly its been a nightmare trying to get through to Washington ESD to find out my exact benefit duration. Been calling for weeks and either get disconnected or sit on hold forever. My claim shows pending and I can't even see how many weeks I have left.

•Have you tried using Claimyr? It's a service that helps you get through to Washington ESD agents without all the waiting and getting hung up on. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows exactly how it works.

•never heard of that, is it legit? sounds too good to be true

•Yeah it's real - I used it last month when my claim was stuck in adjudication. Way better than spending hours on hold or getting disconnected.

The 26 weeks is the standard maximum but theres also extended benefits that can kick in during high unemployment periods. Right now I don't think Washington has any extended programs running but that changes based on the state's unemployment rate.

•wait so sometimes you can get more than 26 weeks?? how do you know if extended benefits are available

•Extended benefits are triggered automatically when the state unemployment rate hits certain thresholds. Washington ESD announces it when it's available. During COVID there were pandemic programs but those ended in 2021.

been on unemployment twice in the past 3 years and both times got different durations. first time got 24 weeks, second time only got 18 weeks. depends on how much you worked and earned in your base period like the other person said

•thats confusing, how do they calculate it exactly?

•honestly no clue lol, washington esd just tells you what you get when you file your claim. something about quarters and earnings but i never understood the math

To clarify the calculation - Washington ESD looks at your earnings in the first 4 of the last 5 completed quarters before you filed. They divide your total base period wages by your highest quarter earnings, then multiply by your weekly benefit amount. The result is your maximum benefit amount, which when divided by your weekly benefit gives you the number of weeks.

•ugh this is so complicated, why cant they just make it simple like everyone gets X weeks

•The system is designed to be proportional to what you paid into it through your work history. More work = more weeks of benefits, up to the 26 week maximum.

TWENTY SIX WEEKS IS NOT ENOUGH!! I've been looking for work for 8 months now and still haven't found anything decent. The system is broken when people can't find jobs but get cut off from benefits. What are we supposed to do, become homeless??

•i feel you, job market is rough right now especially depending on your field

•exactly and they expect you to take any minimum wage job even if it pays less than unemployment. makes no sense

•You do have to accept suitable work offers while on unemployment. Washington ESD has specific criteria for what constitutes suitable work based on your skills and experience.

Pro tip - make sure you're doing your weekly claims on time and following all the job search requirements. If you mess up the weekly claims you can lose weeks of benefits even if you haven't hit your maximum duration yet.

•what are the job search requirements? nobody told me about that

NebulaNomad
•You need to search for work and keep a log of your job search activities. The requirements are on the Washington ESD website - usually 3 job contacts per week minimum.

I had to appeal my benefit duration because Washington ESD initially calculated it wrong. They only gave me 16 weeks but after the appeal I got the full 26. Don't just accept what they give you if it seems low - double check their math.

•how did you know it was wrong? and how long did the appeal take?

Javier Garcia
•I kept good records of my earnings and when I did the calculation myself it didn't match. Appeal took about 6 weeks but I got backpay for all the weeks I should have received.

Also remember that if you work part time while collecting unemployment, those earnings can extend your claim duration. If you earn less than your weekly benefit amount, you can still collect partial unemployment and it doesn't count against your total weeks.

•wait really? so part time work doesn't reduce your total weeks available?
0 coins
Malik Robinson
•Correct - if you work part time and earn less than your weekly benefit, you get partial unemployment but it doesn't use up a full week of benefits. It's actually a good way to stretch your claim.

Just went through this whole process and couldn't get anyone at Washington ESD on the phone to explain my benefit duration. Finally used Claimyr and got connected to an agent in like 10 minutes. They explained everything clearly and I found out I actually had 4 more weeks than I thought.

•is claimyr expensive? seems like it might be worth it to avoid the phone hell

•Honestly didn't care about the cost after spending weeks trying to get through on my own. Saved me so much time and stress.

make sure you understand the difference between regular UI and standby. if you're on standby (like temporary layoff expecting to be called back), the duration rules might be different. i was confused about this for weeks

Omar Fawzi
•what's standby? is that different from regular unemployment?
0 coins
Freya Johansen
•standby is when your employer expects to call you back within a specific timeframe. different rules for job search requirements but same duration limits as regular UI.

One thing to watch out for - if you've collected unemployment in the past year, it might affect your current claim duration. Washington ESD looks at whether you've established a new base period since your last claim.

Miguel Diaz
•oh no, i collected unemployment about 8 months ago for like 12 weeks, does that mean i get less now?
0 coins
Chloe Wilson
•Not necessarily - depends on whether you worked enough after your last claim to establish a new base period. You'll need to check with Washington ESD to see how they calculated your current claim.

The whole system is confusing tbh. I just filed my claim last week and still don't know exactly how many weeks I'll get. Washington ESD website says they'll tell me after they process everything but who knows how long that will take.

If anyone's having trouble getting through to Washington ESD about their benefit duration, I had success with Claimyr too. They connected me to an agent who walked me through exactly how my weeks were calculated and what I needed to do to maximize my benefits.

•Yeah it's definitely worth it if you're stuck and need answers. Beat sitting on hold for hours just to get disconnected.

remember that 26 weeks is the MAXIMUM, not guaranteed. your actual duration could be shorter depending on your work history. also if you quit your job (as opposed to being laid off) you might not qualify at all
0 coins
Luca Greco
•what if you quit for good reason like unsafe working conditions?
0 coins
Zara Malik
•that's called 'good cause' and you might still qualify, but you'd need to prove it. washington esd has specific criteria for what counts as good cause for quitting.
