How long do I have to file for unemployment benefits in Washington ESD?
I got laid off from my job at a manufacturing plant about 10 days ago and I'm just now looking into filing for unemployment. I've been putting it off because I thought I might find something quickly but no luck so far. Does Washington ESD have a deadline for when you have to file your initial claim? I'm worried I might have waited too long already. Also wondering if there's a time limit on how far back they'll pay benefits from when you first became unemployed vs when you actually file the claim.

You haven't waited too long at all! Washington ESD doesn't have a specific deadline for filing your initial unemployment claim, but there are some important timing things to know. Your benefit year starts the Sunday of the week you file, not when you became unemployed. So if you file today, your claim would be effective starting this past Sunday. You won't get paid for the time before you filed unless there were extenuating circumstances.

•That's a relief! So I should file as soon as possible then to start getting benefits?

Andre Moreau
•Exactly. The sooner you file, the sooner your benefit year starts and you can begin receiving payments.

I made the same mistake when I got laid off last year - waited almost 3 weeks thinking I'd find something quick. Washington ESD told me I could have filed right away and started getting benefits sooner. There's no penalty for filing 'too early' if you're eligible.

•Good to know I'm not the only one who waited. Did you have any issues with the application process?

•The online application was pretty straightforward, just had to have my employment history ready.

One thing to keep in mind is Washington ESD has a one-week waiting period before you can receive your first payment. So even after you file and get approved, there's still a delay before money starts coming in. File ASAP to get that clock started.

•Wait, so there's a whole week where I won't get paid even if approved?

•Yep, it's the unpaid waiting week. Pretty standard across most states. After that first week though, payments come weekly if you keep filing your weekly claims.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD by phone to ask questions about your claim, I recently discovered this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helps people get connected to unemployment agents. They have this demo video (https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ) showing how it works. Saved me hours of trying to call on my own when I had questions about my adjudication process.

•Interesting, I'll check that out if I run into issues. The phone lines are probably swamped.

•Never heard of that but anything to avoid sitting on hold for hours sounds good to me.

File today if you can! I waited 2 weeks after getting fired and regretted it. Those are benefits you'll never get back. Washington ESD's website walks you through everything step by step. You'll need your Social Security number, employment history for the past 18 months, and reason for separation from your last job.

•Thanks! I have all that info ready. Going to file this afternoon.

•Good plan. The whole process took me maybe 30 minutes online.

Just to clarify something - while there's no deadline to file your initial claim, there ARE deadlines once you start receiving benefits. You have to file your weekly claims every week and there are strict job search requirements you have to meet. Missing those deadlines can cause your benefits to stop.

•What are the job search requirements? Do I need to apply for a certain number of jobs each week?

Amara Adeyemi
•Yes, you need to make at least 3 job search contacts per week and keep a log of your activities. Washington ESD explains all this after you file your claim.

•And you have to register with WorkSourceWA too - that's part of the requirements.

Ugh the job search requirement is such a pain. Like we're not already stressed enough about finding work. But yeah definitely file soon, every week you wait is money you're losing.

•I get it, but I guess they want to make sure people are actually looking for work.

•True, just wish the process was less bureaucratic when you're already dealing with being unemployed.

One more tip - make sure you answer all the questions honestly on your application. If there's anything complicated about your separation (like if you were offered reduced hours instead of layoff), be upfront about it. Washington ESD will investigate anyway and it's better to explain everything from the start than have your claim held up in adjudication.

Carmen Reyes
•My situation was pretty straightforward - just a mass layoff due to reduced orders. Should be fine.

•That's the easiest type of claim to process. You should be approved without any issues.

Does anyone know if the amount you get depends on when you file? Like if I wait longer do I get less money per week?

Andre Moreau
•No, your weekly benefit amount is based on your earnings history from your base period, not when you file. Waiting just means you lose out on weeks of payments.

•Okay good, at least the amount stays the same.

For anyone reading this thread later - Washington ESD processes most standard unemployment claims pretty quickly these days. If you're laid off due to lack of work, your claim will probably be approved within a week or two. More complicated separations might take longer and go into adjudication.

•That's reassuring. I really need to get some income coming in soon.

•Yeah, and remember you can usually get your first payment about 2-3 weeks after filing if everything goes smoothly.

Actually had another thought about Claimyr - it's really useful if you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD about your claim status or if you run into any snags during the application process. Much easier than trying to get through on the regular phone lines which are always busy.

•I'll definitely keep that in mind. Hopefully I won't need it but good to have as backup.

•Yeah the phone system at Washington ESD can be really frustrating when you have urgent questions.

Filing online is definitely the way to go. I tried calling to file over the phone when I first got laid off and was on hold forever. The website is much faster and you can do it any time of day.

•Good point about doing it online. I'm comfortable with websites so that should work fine for me.

•Yeah and you get confirmation right away that your application was submitted.

Just make sure you have your banking info ready if you want direct deposit. Getting checks in the mail takes longer and who wants to wait even more time for their money?

Carmen Reyes
•Definitely want direct deposit. I assume they need routing and account number?

Dylan Wright
•Yep, exactly. Same info you'd give any employer for payroll.

This might be obvious but make sure you're actually eligible before you file. You need to have worked enough hours and earned enough money in your base period. Washington ESD's website has a calculator to help you figure out if you qualify.

Carmen Reyes
•I worked full time for over 2 years so I should definitely qualify. But good reminder to check.

NebulaKnight
•Yeah with 2 years of full time work you'll definitely meet the requirements.

Seriously though, stop procrastinating and just file today. Every day you wait is money out of your pocket. The application isn't that complicated and you can always call or use that Claimyr thing if you have questions later.

•You're absolutely right. I'm going to file right after I finish reading these responses.

•Good! And remember to file your weekly claims every week once you get approved.

One last thing - keep records of everything. Save confirmation numbers, print out important pages, keep track of all your job search activities. Washington ESD might ask for documentation later and you want to be prepared.

•Great advice. I'll start a folder for all my unemployment paperwork.
