How long after losing a job can you apply for unemployment in Washington state?

I just got laid off yesterday from my retail job after 2 years. My manager said I should apply for unemployment right away but I'm not sure if there's a waiting period or if I need to wait a certain amount of time before I can file? I've never been on unemployment before and don't want to mess anything up. Should I apply immediately or wait? Also worried about the whole job search requirement thing - do I need to start looking for work right away or can I take a few days to figure things out?

You should apply immediately! There's no waiting period to file your initial claim with Washington ESD. In fact, you can file your claim the same day you lose your job or even the day after. The sooner you file, the sooner your claim can be processed. Your benefit year starts the Sunday of the week you file, so don't delay.

Thanks! I was worried I had to wait a week or something. I'll file today then.

0 coins

Yeah definitely don't wait - I made that mistake and lost a week of benefits because I thought I had to wait

0 coins

File ASAP but be prepared for the job search requirements to kick in immediately. Washington ESD requires you to make at least 3 job search contacts per week starting with your first weekly claim. You'll need to keep a detailed log of all your job search activities including employer names, dates, and methods of contact.

Do I need to have 3 job searches done before I file my first weekly claim? Or can I do them during that first week?

0 coins

You do them during the week you're claiming benefits for. So if you file your initial claim today, you'll file your first weekly claim next week and report the job searches you did during that week.

I had trouble getting through to Washington ESD when I first filed last year. The phone lines are constantly busy and their online system crashed on me twice. If you run into issues trying to file or need to talk to someone about your claim, I found this service called Claimyr that helped me get through to an actual agent. Check out claimyr.com - they have a video demo at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

Never heard of that service before. Does it actually work or is it just another scam?

0 coins

It's legit - they basically keep calling until they get you through to a real person at Washington ESD. Saved me hours of busy signals and getting hung up on.

APPLY TODAY! I cannot stress this enough. Every day you wait is potentially money lost. The system is designed to help people who lose their jobs through no fault of their own, and you qualify immediately upon separation from employment. Don't overthink it.

0 coins

Okay I'm convinced - going to file right now. Thank you everyone!

0 coins

wait so there's no waiting week anymore? I thought you had to wait a week before getting benefits

0 coins

Washington eliminated the waiting week back in 2021. You can get benefits for your first week of unemployment now.

0 coins

oh wow that's good to know, thanks for the update

Just make sure you have all your employment information ready when you file - dates of employment, employer contact info, reason for separation, etc. The more accurate information you provide upfront, the less likely your claim will get stuck in adjudication.

0 coins

What happens if my claim goes to adjudication? Is that bad?

0 coins

Not necessarily bad, but it means they need to investigate something about your claim before approving benefits. Could be anything from verifying your employment to checking if you quit voluntarily or were fired for misconduct.

0 coins

Adjudication can take weeks though, so definitely try to be as accurate as possible on your initial application

0 coins

Don't forget you'll need to file weekly claims every week to actually receive benefits. Filing the initial claim is just the first step - you have to keep certifying that you're still unemployed and looking for work.

0 coins

How do I file the weekly claims? Is it the same website?

0 coins

Yes, you log into your Washington ESD account and file your weekly claim. They'll send you reminders but you need to do it every week by the deadline or you'll miss that week's benefits.

0 coins

I've been on unemployment twice and both times I filed within 24 hours of losing my job. The key is to get that initial claim in the system as soon as possible. Even if there are issues to resolve later, at least your claim date is established.

0 coins

This. I waited 3 days to file thinking I needed to 'process' what happened and ended up regretting it. Those 3 days felt like forever when I was already stressed about money.

Something to keep in mind - if you were laid off, make sure your employer coded it correctly. Sometimes they'll put down that you quit when you were actually laid off, which can complicate your claim. Double check what they submitted to Washington ESD.

0 coins

How would I know what they submitted? Do I get a copy of something?

0 coins

You can check your claim status online once you file. If there's a discrepancy between what you reported and what your employer reported, Washington ESD will flag it for review.

0 coins

Also remember that you can work part-time while on unemployment and still receive partial benefits. Don't think you have to be completely unemployed to qualify. Washington has pretty generous partial benefit rules.

0 coins

Good point! I picked up some gig work while on unemployment and still got most of my benefits. Just have to report all earnings honestly.

0 coins

The Washington ESD website can be confusing for first-time filers. Take your time filling out the application and read everything carefully. If you make mistakes on the initial claim, it can delay your benefits while they sort it out.

0 coins

Are there any common mistakes I should watch out for?

0 coins

Wrong dates, incorrect employer information, not being clear about why you lost your job. Also make sure you answer the questions about availability for work correctly.

0 coins

If you run into technical issues with the website or need help understanding your claim status, that Claimyr service someone mentioned earlier is actually pretty helpful. I used it when my claim got stuck and couldn't get through on the phone. Worth checking out if you hit any roadblocks.

0 coins

How much does something like that cost? I'm already worried about money.

0 coins

It's not expensive and honestly if it helps you get your benefits faster, it pays for itself. Better than spending hours on hold or waiting weeks for a callback.

0 coins

File today, file today, file today! Cannot emphasize this enough. I work in HR and see people delay filing all the time thinking they need to wait or that they should find another job first. You earned these benefits through your payroll taxes - use them!

0 coins

Thank you! I filed about an hour ago and already feel better knowing it's in the system.

0 coins

Great advice! Too many people have pride issues about filing for unemployment when it's literally insurance they paid into.

0 coins

One more thing - start keeping track of all your job search activities from day one. Use a spreadsheet or notebook to log every application, networking event, job fair, etc. Washington ESD can audit your job search log at any time.

0 coins

Is there a specific format they want for the job search log?

0 coins

Not really, just needs to include employer name, date, position applied for, and how you contacted them. Keep it simple but detailed.

0 coins

I just use a simple Word document with columns. As long as you have the basic info, you're good.

0 coins

Good luck with your claim! The whole process seems overwhelming at first but it's pretty straightforward once you get the hang of it. The hardest part is usually just getting through the initial application.

0 coins

Thanks everyone for all the help! This community is amazing.

Just want to echo what others have said about filing immediately. I delayed filing for a week because I thought I might get called back to work, but that callback never came. Lost a week of benefits for nothing. File now, you can always stop claiming if you find work.

0 coins

Same thing happened to me. Employer said 'maybe we'll call you back' so I waited. They never did and I lost money I could have used for bills.

For anyone else reading this thread - remember that if you have issues reaching Washington ESD by phone, services like Claimyr can help you get through to an actual person instead of wasting hours on busy signals. Sometimes you really need to talk to someone to resolve claim issues.

0 coins

I was skeptical about using a service like that but after trying to call Washington ESD for three days straight with no luck, I gave it a try. Got through to an agent in like 30 minutes.

0 coins

Last piece of advice - set up direct deposit when you file your claim. Paper checks take forever and can get lost in the mail. Direct deposit is much faster and more reliable.

0 coins

Good tip! I made sure to set that up when I filed.

0 coins

Yes! And double-check your bank account info. I made a typo in my routing number and it delayed my first payment by two weeks.

0 coins

Just wanted to add - if you're worried about the job search requirements, don't let that delay your filing! You can start with simple things like updating your resume, browsing job boards, or reaching out to former colleagues. Even attending virtual job fairs or career workshops counts toward your weekly search activities. The important thing is to document everything you do. I found that once I got into a routine, meeting the 3 weekly contacts was actually pretty easy and helped keep me motivated during my job search.

0 coins

This is really helpful advice! I was definitely overthinking the job search requirements. It sounds like there are lots of different activities that count, not just submitting applications. I'll start with updating my resume today and maybe look into some online career workshops. Thanks for breaking it down - makes it feel much more manageable!
