How do I get my 4 digit pin for Washington ESD unemployment benefits?
I'm trying to access my unemployment account online but it's asking for a 4 digit PIN that I don't remember setting up when I first applied. I've been looking all over the Washington ESD website but can't find where to get or reset this PIN. Has anyone else had this problem? I need to file my weekly claim and I'm getting stressed about missing the deadline.

You should have received your PIN in the mail when your claim was first processed. Check any letters from Washington ESD - it's usually on the determination letter or a separate PIN notice. If you can't find it, you'll need to request a new one.

•I moved right after filing so I might have missed some mail. How do I request a new PIN?

•You can call the customer service line or use the PIN reset option on the website, but you'll need to verify your identity with personal information.

If you're having trouble getting through to Washington ESD by phone, there's actually a service called Claimyr that can help you reach them faster. I found out about it when I was stuck in a similar situation. They have a system that calls for you and connects you when an agent picks up. Check out claimyr.com - they even have a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that before. Does it actually work or is it just another scam?

•It's legitimate. I used it twice when I couldn't get through the normal way. Saved me hours of redialing and waiting on hold.

•I can vouch for Claimyr too. Used it when my adjudication was taking forever and I needed to speak to someone about my case status.

The PIN system is so frustrating! I had the same issue and it turns out the PIN is different from your SAW password. Make sure you're not confusing the two - your PIN is specifically for telephone claims, not the online portal.

Angelina Farar
•Wait, so there are two different passwords? I'm so confused now.

•Yeah it's confusing. Your SAW account has one password for logging into the website, but the 4-digit PIN is for calling in your weekly claims by phone.

•Exactly right. The PIN is only needed if you want to file by phone instead of online. Most people just use the website now.

Check your spam folder too! Washington ESD emails sometimes end up there and they might have sent PIN instructions via email.

•Good idea, I'll check that now.

Why is everything with unemployment so complicated?? They make it impossible to get help when you need it most. This whole system needs to be overhauled.

•totally agree! it's like they don't want people to actually get their benefits

•The system definitely has room for improvement, but there are resources available if you know where to look.

Update: I found the PIN in an old letter that was forwarded from my previous address. Thanks everyone for the help! For anyone else with this problem - definitely check all your mail from Washington ESD carefully.

•Great news! Keep that PIN somewhere safe so you don't lose it again.

If anyone else is still having trouble getting through to Washington ESD about PIN issues, I'd recommend trying Claimyr. I was skeptical at first but it really does work. Much better than spending your whole day redialing.

•Is there a cost for that service?

•There is a fee but honestly it was worth it to not waste hours of my time trying to get through myself.

Pro tip: if you do have to call Washington ESD, try calling right when they open at 8am or during lunch break around 12-1pm. Those times seem to have shorter wait times.

Bethany Groves
•tried that and still waited 90 minutes lol

•Yeah the wait times are brutal no matter when you call. That's why services like Claimyr exist I guess.

Make sure you have all your information ready when you do get through - SSN, claim confirmation number, address, etc. They'll ask for verification before helping with PIN issues.

•If you're filing online successfully, you don't need the PIN. That's only for phone filing.

Washington ESD really needs to make this clearer on their website. So many people get confused about the difference between account passwords and PINs.

•Agreed! The whole system is user-unfriendly.

•The information is there but it could definitely be organized better for first-time users.

Just to clarify for anyone reading this later - your 4-digit PIN is specifically for the Washington ESD automated phone system. You can file weekly claims either online through your SAW account OR by calling and using your PIN. Most people find online easier.

•This is really helpful clarification, thank you!

•Exactly. I only use my PIN when the website is down for maintenance.

Has anyone tried the live chat on the Washington ESD website for PIN help? Wondering if that's faster than calling.

Bethany Groves
•i don't think they have live chat, just the callback request form

•Oh you're right, I was thinking of a different agency.

For future reference, when you do get your PIN, write it down and keep it with your important documents. Don't rely on remembering it or storing it only digitally.

Angelina Farar
•Definitely learned that lesson! I've got it written down in multiple places now.

The whole PIN thing seems outdated honestly. Why do we still need separate numbers for phone access when everything else is moving to unified login systems?

•Government systems tend to be slower to modernize, but you're right that it's not the most user-friendly approach.

One more option if you're really stuck - some WorkSource offices can help with basic account issues. Not all locations, but worth calling your local office to ask.

•Good point! WorkSource staff are usually pretty knowledgeable about Washington ESD procedures.

•I didn't even think of that option. Good to know for next time!

Just want to add that if you're still having trouble and need to call Washington ESD, don't give up after the first try. The phone lines are definitely overloaded, but persistence pays off. I had to call three different times over two days before I finally got through to someone who could help reset my PIN. Also, make sure you call from the phone number associated with your claim - they use that for verification purposes.

•That's really good advice about calling from the registered phone number! I didn't know they used that for verification. Would have saved me some hassle if I'd known that earlier. The persistence part is so true too - it's frustrating but you really do have to keep trying with these government systems.

Another tip that helped me - if you're getting frustrated trying to reach Washington ESD and need your PIN reset urgently, you can also try filing your weekly claim online instead of by phone. You don't need the 4-digit PIN for online filing, just your SAW account login. The PIN is only required if you want to use the automated phone system. I was stressing about my PIN for nothing when I could just keep filing online like usual!

•This is such an important point! I wish I had known this earlier - I was so focused on getting the PIN that I completely forgot I could just keep using the online system. It's crazy how we can overthink these things when we're stressed about deadlines. Thanks for pointing this out, it'll definitely help other people who find themselves in the same situation.

•Yes! This is exactly what I needed to hear. I've been so worried about getting that PIN that I forgot the online system works perfectly fine without it. Sometimes when you're stressed about missing deadlines, you can't think clearly. I'm going to stick with online filing for now and deal with the PIN later when I have more time. Thanks for the reminder that there are multiple ways to accomplish the same goal!

I went through the exact same thing a few months ago! The stress of potentially missing your filing deadline makes everything feel more urgent than it needs to be. What really helped me was taking a step back and realizing that the 4-digit PIN is completely separate from your online account access. If you can log into your SAW account online, you can file your weekly claim there without needing the PIN at all. The PIN is only for the phone system, which most people don't even use anymore since the website is usually more convenient. Save yourself the headache of trying to get through on the phone lines right now - just stick with online filing and you'll be fine!
