Hearing for school attendance issue - ESD requesting attendance records by 5pm

Just got out of my ESD hearing about my unemployment being denied due to school attendance issues. I think it went pretty well! The judge seemed to understand my situation. They're now requesting my actual attendance records from the school (or documentation of absences) and I have to submit everything by 5pm today. Is this a good sign? Has anyone else had to provide school attendance records after a hearing? I'm taking it as positive that they didn't just deny me outright, but I'm still nervous about getting everything submitted correctly and on time. The school admin office is being slow about getting me the records.

Yes, this is typically a good sign! When they request additional documentation after a hearing instead of making an immediate decision, it usually means they're considering approving your claim but need verification. Make sure you submit EXACTLY what they asked for - the complete attendance records, not just partial ones. If the school is being slow, explain the urgency - tell them it's for an unemployment hearing with a 5pm deadline. Also send the judge an email explaining if you're having trouble getting the records by the deadline.

Thanks for the reassurance! Just called the school again and explained the deadline. They're emailing me the records within the hour. Should I send any kind of explanation with the records or just submit them as-is?

i had something similar happen last year!! they asked for my work schedule after my hearing and then approved me a week later. good luck!!

That's really encouraging to hear! How long did it take after you submitted the documents for them to make a decision? I'm trying to figure out how long I'll be anxiously checking my account.

DON'T get your hopes up too much!! I had a similar situation and they STILL denied me even after I sent everything they asked for!!! The whole system is rigged to deny claims - they just want more paperwork to find some tiny reason to disqualify you. Make sure EVERY SINGLE DATE matches perfectly with your previous statements or they'll use any inconsistency against you!!!!

While I understand your frustration, requesting documentation doesn't automatically mean denial. The key factor here is whether the attendance records actually support the claimant's eligibility. If school attendance didn't interfere with availability for work (which is what ESD cares about), then providing those records should help, not hurt the case.

I've been through 3 different ESD hearings and can confirm that asking for additional documentation is usually a positive sign. The judges don't waste time requesting more info if they've already decided to deny you. Just make absolutely certain you get those records in by 5pm - not 5:01pm. I would also include a brief cover letter explaining how your school attendance didn't interfere with your ability to accept full-time work (which is what they're actually concerned about).

That's really good advice about including a cover letter! I'll definitely do that to clarify how my classes were all evening courses and didn't affect my availability during standard work hours.

when i was in school i got denied for ui but i was taking day classes maybe u took night classes? they care if ur available during business hours not if ur attending school at all

You're right - I was taking evening classes (6-9pm) and was completely available during regular business hours. I made that clear during the hearing, so hopefully the attendance records will just confirm what I already told them.

I had such a nightmare trying to reach anyone at ESD when I was going through my hearing process last month. Have you been able to get through to them easily? I ended up using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get connected to an actual ESD agent instead of waiting on hold for hours. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. It was super helpful for checking on my documentation status after I submitted it.

So I had a hearing about my school attendance back in 2023 and they also requested my records afterward. In my case they wanted to verify that I was actually available for work despite being in school. I ended up getting approved, but it took them about 10 days after I submitted the records to make the decision. One thing I learned - if you're having ANY trouble getting the records by 5pm, send an email explaining the delay and requesting an extension. They're usually reasonable about it as long as you communicate.

Thanks for sharing your experience! I got the records from my school and just submitted them with a cover letter explaining my availability during business hours. Now the waiting game begins...

I went through something similar but mine was about a training program not regular school. The important thing ESD cares about is whether you were "able and available" for full-time work while attending school. If your classes were evenings/weekends and didn't interfere with typical work hours, you should be fine. My cousin works at ESD and says they're mainly looking for evidence that you couldn't have worked a regular job due to your class schedule.

Your cousin actually works at ESD?? Can you ask them why they make everything SO COMPLICATED?? I swear they intentionally make the process confusing just to deny more claims!!!!

Quick update - I got all the documentation submitted by 4:30pm with a cover letter explaining how my evening classes didn't affect my work availability. The school was actually super helpful once I explained the situation. Now I'm just nervously waiting for their decision! Thanks everyone for the advice and support!

Great job getting everything submitted! Based on what you've described, it sounds like you have a strong case. The fact that your classes were in the evening is particularly important. Be prepared for it to take 7-14 days for a decision, though sometimes it can be faster. Please update us when you hear back!
