ESD weekly claims when I worked full-time - skip reporting or still file?
I'm working a seasonal job right now that has me at 40+ hours some weeks, so I know I won't qualify for benefits those weeks. Do I still need to file my weekly claim and report all those hours, or can I just skip filing anything on the ESD website for weeks I worked full-time? I'm worried if I don't file at all for those weeks it might mess up my claim when my hours drop again. First time dealing with this situation and don't want to accidentally do something wrong!

You should always file your weekly claim, even if you worked full-time that week. Report all your hours and earnings accurately. If you skip filing for weeks, your claim could go inactive after two weeks of not claiming, and you'd have to reopen it when your hours drop again. This creates unnecessary paperwork and potential delays. Just file each week and let the system calculate if you're eligible for benefits - it's designed to handle exactly this situation.

•Thank you! That makes sense. I wasn't sure if filing when I know I won't get benefits would be wasting someone's time or something. I'll keep filing weekly no matter what.

NO you DEFINETLY need to file every single week!!!! I learned this the hard way last winter when I got some temp work. I didn't file for 3 weeks thinking 'why bother' and my whole claim shut down. Had to reapply and wait ANOTHER 3 weeks for everything to process again. ESD doesn't tell you this clearly anywhere!!! Just file and put in your hours even if you get $0.

Just adding some clarification here - your claim becomes inactive after two consecutive weeks of not filing. When this happens, you need to reopen your claim. It won't affect your total benefit amount, but you'll need to go through the reopening process which creates a delay. Also keep in mind that even if you work full time, if your earnings for that week are less than your weekly benefit amount plus $5, you might still get partial benefits. So always file and report accurately.

•Wait so if I make $50 less than my benefit amount in a week I could still get something? I've been working slightly reduced hours but thought I wouldn't qualify for anything unless I was way under full-time.

my cousin said you can just skip those weeks and it's fine but idk that doesn't sound right to me? i always file even when i know i won't get anything just to be safe. the system will just say you earned too much and that's that.

•Your cousin is incorrect. Skipping weeks will cause your claim to become inactive, creating more work for yourself later. Always file weekly claims during your benefit year, regardless of how much you worked.

I've been trying to reach ESD to ask this exact question! I tried calling them but it's impossible to get through. After trying for days, I discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com) which got me connected to an ESD agent in about 20 minutes. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 The agent confirmed what others are saying - you need to file every week even if you worked full-time. If you don't, your claim goes inactive and you'll have to restart it. She also mentioned that sometimes people qualify for partial benefits even when working almost full-time, depending on your benefit amount and earnings.

•Thanks for sharing this! I've been trying to call them too with no luck. I'll check out that service if I have more questions I can't get answered here.

when I was on unemployment last year i would skip filing when i picked up temp work. big mistake! had to reopen my claim and wait for almost 2 weeks before i could get benefits again when my contract ended. just take the 5 mins to file even when you know you won't get paid

One more important point - when your hours go back down and you qualify for benefits again, your weekly claim will be much easier if you've been consistently filing. The system already has your work history and earnings information, so there's less chance of triggering adjudication or other delays. Consistency is key with ESD's system.

•That's really helpful to know. I definitely don't want to trigger adjudication - I've heard that can take weeks to resolve. I'll keep filing no matter what my hours are.

just dont forget to file on sundays!! i always set a reminder on my phone because if you miss sunday you can still file on monday but if you miss that too its a whole thing to get permission to backdate your claim and sometimes they deny it for no reason

•Good reminder! I missed a Sunday once and had to go through the late filing process. What a headache!
