ESD job search requirements: Do multiple interviews with same company count separately?

I'm on my 4th week of unemployment and confused about reporting job search activities. I had a phone screening with TechBridge Corp yesterday. They called me back this morning for a Zoom interview later today, and if that goes well, there's an in-person interview tomorrow. For my weekly claim job search log, do I count each of these interviews as separate activities? Or since it's all with the same company, does the whole interview process only count as ONE job search activity? I don't want to mess this up and get disqualified! Thanks for any help!

Each interview counts separately! ESD considers different stages of the interview process as individual job search activities, even if they're with the same employer. So your phone screening counts as one, the Zoom interview as another, and the in-person interview would be a third. Make sure you document each one separately with the date, contact info, and type of activity. Good luck with the interviews!

this is RIGHT!! i made the mistake of only counting a whole interview process as 1 activity and got flagged for not meeting my 3 activities. each interview = 1 activity even w/ same company

Actually, this is a common source of confusion. According to ESD's guidelines, you can count each separate interview as its own job search activity. So in your case: - Phone interview = 1 activity - Zoom interview = 1 activity - In-person interview = 1 activity Just make sure you document each one properly with the date, company name, contact person, and type of interview. The key point ESD looks for is that these are distinctly different interactions that happened on different days. Each represents a separate effort in your job search process.

Thank you!! That's a huge relief - I was worried I'd only have one activity to report this week. I've been keeping detailed notes of each interview with dates and contact names, so I should be good. I appreciate the clear explanation!

i think its all 1 activity bc its same job ur applying for??? thats what my friend told me anyways

Your friend is incorrect. ESD specifically counts each separate interview as its own activity, even if it's for the same position. The key is that these are different interactions on different days, each requiring preparation and effort on your part. This is clearly stated in ESD's job search requirements documentation.

I've been through this exact situation! Each separate interview counts as its own job search activity, even if it's with the same company for the same position. The reasoning is that each interview requires separate preparation and effort on your part. One important tip: make sure you're keeping VERY detailed records. For each interview activity, document: - Date and time - Company name - Position title - Contact person's name - Contact information (phone/email) - Type of interview (phone, video, in-person) - Brief description of what happened I actually got selected for a job search review last year, and having these detailed records saved me from potential disqualification. Also, if you're struggling to reach ESD to confirm this or have other questions, I found a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual ESD agent quickly instead of waiting for hours. They have a video demo showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. Definitely worth it when you need answers fast.

Thanks for the detailed advice! I've been documenting everything but hadn't thought to include the time or a description of what happened. Will definitely add those. Good to know about that service too - I might need that if I have more complicated questions in the future.

This is a JOKE!! The whole system is designed to TRAP people. First they make these confusing requirements then they don't explain them clearly ANYWHERE on their website!!! I got disqualified because I didn't know each interview counted separately and had to appeal and wait 6 WEEKS for a hearing just to get my benefits back. The adjudicator even admitted the rules weren't clear!!! TYPICAL GOVERNMENT BUREAUCRACY!!

That sounds really frustrating! I think the ESD systems definitely could use some updates to make things clearer. Glad you eventually got your benefits sorted out though.

just wanted 2 add that u should also get a business card or email from each interviewer if possible. i print those out & keep them with my job search records. my friend got audited & this really helped her prove she did all the interviews she claimed

That's a smart idea! I'll definitely ask for business cards or follow up with thank you emails to create that paper trail. Better to have too much documentation than not enough.

My situation was kinda similar but I'm now wondering if I messed up... I had 2 interviews with Amazon (phone then virtual) but I just listed Amazon once on my job search log with the date of the first interview. Should I go back and fix this somehow?? I don't want to get in trouble but I already submitted those weeks...

You should be fine for past weeks - ESD doesn't typically expect you to go back and correct previous entries unless they specifically request you to. But going forward, definitely count each interview separately! It works in your favor anyway since you get more activities counted toward your weekly requirement.

Calling ESD directly is nearly impossible these days. When I had a similar question, I used Claimyr.com and got through to an agent in about 20 minutes instead of making dozens of failed calls. They connected me directly to an ESD rep who confirmed that each interview stage counts as a separate activity.

I just want to add another perspective here - I work as a career counselor and help people navigate unemployment benefits. The advice everyone's giving is absolutely correct - each interview stage counts as a separate job search activity. What I tell my clients is to think of it this way: if you had three separate interviews with three different companies on three different days, you'd obviously count those as three activities. The same logic applies when they're with the same company - each interview required you to prepare, show up, and engage in a distinct job search effort. One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet is that you can also count follow-up activities! If you send a thank-you email after each interview, those can potentially count as additional job search activities too (though I'd recommend focusing on the interviews themselves as your primary activities). Keep doing what you're doing with the detailed documentation - you're on the right track. And congratulations on making it through multiple rounds! That's a really positive sign that you're a strong candidate.

Thanks for the professional insight! I hadn't thought about counting thank-you emails as additional activities - that's really helpful to know. I've been sending them after each interview anyway just to be polite, so it's great that they might count toward my requirements too. Your explanation about thinking of it like separate companies really makes the logic clear. Appreciate the encouragement about being a strong candidate - fingers crossed this process leads to an offer!

As someone who just went through this exact situation last month, I can confirm what everyone else is saying - each interview absolutely counts as a separate activity! I had 4 rounds with Microsoft (phone screen, technical interview, team interview, and final interview with the hiring manager) and counted all 4 separately on my weekly claims. One thing that really helped me was creating a simple spreadsheet to track everything. I included columns for date, company, position, contact person, type of activity, and outcome. This made it super easy to fill out my weekly job search log and gave me solid documentation in case ESD ever questioned anything. Also, don't forget that if you do any prep work that involves contacting the company (like calling to confirm interview details or asking questions about the role), those phone calls can sometimes count as additional job search contacts too. Just make sure you're documenting who you spoke with and when. Sounds like you're doing everything right though - good luck with the rest of your interview process with TechBridge Corp!

That spreadsheet idea is brilliant! I've just been keeping handwritten notes but a spreadsheet would be so much more organized and easier to reference when filling out the weekly claims. I'm definitely going to set one up tonight. Thanks for the tip about prep calls potentially counting too - I did call yesterday to confirm the Zoom interview details, so I'll make sure to document that. Really appreciate all the detailed advice from everyone here!

Hey Louisa! I went through something similar a few months ago and can confirm what everyone's saying - each interview definitely counts as a separate activity. I had a 3-round interview process with a local marketing firm and counted each one separately without any issues. One tip I'd add is to make sure you're noting the TYPE of interview in your documentation (phone screening, video interview, in-person, etc.) since ESD sometimes asks for that level of detail. Also, if they gave you any specific instructions or materials to review between interviews, documenting that preparation work can sometimes count as additional job search activity too. Sounds like you're being really thorough with your record-keeping which is awesome! Hope the rest of your interviews with TechBridge Corp go well - multiple rounds usually means they're seriously considering you. Good luck!

Thanks Nathaniel! That's a great point about documenting the type of interview - I've been including that in my notes but will make sure to be even more specific going forward. I didn't think about preparation work potentially counting as additional activities though - they did send me a case study to review before the Zoom interview today. Should I document that as a separate job search activity or just mention it in the notes for the interview itself?
