ESD claim stuck in adjudication after contract job ended - adjudication date changed to 02/07/24

I'm super stressed right now about my unemployment situation. My temp contract ended on 12/16/23 and I filed for ESD benefits the very next day (12/17/23). It's been weeks and my claim is still showing as 'pending' with no movement. I've never filed for unemployment before so I have no idea if this is normal or if something's wrong. The adjudication issue change date on my account recently updated to 02/07/24, but I don't know what that actually means? I tried calling ESD multiple times but couldn't get through to anyone. I even contacted the governor's office who said they'd "expedite my claim" but I haven't heard anything since. Does being on a contract job affect my chances of approval? I worked consistently for 8 months before the contract ended. I'm getting really anxious because rent is due soon and I have no income coming in. Anyone know how long adjudication typically takes or if there's anything else I should be doing?

Temp/contract jobs can definitely qualify for unemployment as long as you worked enough hours in your base year and the contract ended through no fault of your own (meaning you weren't fired for misconduct). The problem is ESD is notorious for taking forever with adjudication. The date you're seeing (2/7/24) is likely when they've scheduled your claim to be reviewed. Have you been filing your weekly claims while waiting? Make sure you do that even while in adjudication. Also, check your ESD online account for any messages or requests for additional information - sometimes they need more documents but don't make it obvious.

Thank you so much for answering! Yes, I've been filing every week like clockwork. I've checked my online account daily and there's nothing asking for more information... it just sits there in pending status. The waiting is killing me! I worked way more than the minimum hours needed (full time for 8 months), and the contract just ended naturally - nobody fired me or anything. Do you think I should try reaching out to the governor's office again?

I went through something similar in November! Contract job ended and it took ESD almost 7 weeks to approve my claim. The thing that finally worked for me was using Claimyr to get through to an actual ESD agent (claimyr.com). It's the only way I actually got to speak to someone. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 The ESD agent told me my claim was sitting in a backlog and needed to be assigned to an adjudicator. They flagged it for expedited review and I got my decision 5 days later. If you're worried about making rent, it might be worth trying.

Is that service legit? Sounds sketchy to pay money just to talk to a government agency we should be able to reach anyway...

I was suspicious too but it worked for me. The ESD phone system is completely broken - I tried calling over 30 times before using this. They don't charge until you actually get connected to ESD. Desperate times...

THE SYSTEM IS A JOKE!!!! I waited 10 WEEKS for my claim to process last year and almost got EVICTED!!! ESD claims there's no backlog anymore but it's LIE LIE LIE!!!! The governor's office "expedite" promise is MEANINGLESS - they just send an email that gets ignored. The contract job thing might trigger extra review but they should still approve you. KEEP CALLING EVERY DAY!!!

While I understand your frustration, yelling in all caps isn't particularly helpful. The reality is that ESD has improved their processing times since the pandemic, but certain claim types still trigger adjudication, especially first-time claims with contract work that needs verification with the employer. OP: The 2/7 date means that's when your claim is scheduled for review by an adjudicator. Yes, that's a frustratingly long wait, but unfortunately not unusual. Continue filing weekly claims, and make sure you're completing the required job search activities (3 per week).

I double checked the correspondence tab and there's nothing there except the initial claim confirmation. No requests for information or anything. But thank you for suggesting this - I'll keep checking daily!

I think your claim is probably going through normal adjudication. Mine took 5 weeks after a contract job ended. The fact that it's your first time applying might have flagged it for extra review. They have to verify with your employer that the contract actually ended and wasn't terminated early for cause. One thing that might help: if you have a copy of your contract showing the end date, or any emails from your employer confirming the contract completion, upload those documents to your ESD account under the document upload section. That helped speed up my process.

That's a brilliant idea! I do have an email from my supervisor confirming the contract end date. Going to upload that right now. Thank you so much for the suggestion!

To directly answer your question: If your contract naturally ended and was not terminated for cause, you should be approved. Contract/temp workers qualify for regular UI benefits as long as you worked enough hours in your base year (about 680 hours across 6+ months). However, adjudication for first-time claimants with contract work often takes longer because: 1. ESD must verify with the employer that the contract ended naturally 2. They need to confirm your status wasn't misclassified (employee vs. contractor) 3. First-time claims get higher scrutiny for fraud prevention The 2/7/24 date likely indicates when your case is scheduled for adjudicator review. While waiting: - Continue filing weekly claims - Complete 3 job search activities each week and document them - Check your online account daily for correspondence - Upload your contract termination documentation For immediate financial needs, consider contacting your county's rental assistance programs.

This is so helpful, thank you! I had no idea about the 680 hours requirement, but I definitely worked well over that (full-time for 8 months). And yes, the contract had a specific end date that everyone knew about from the beginning. I'm going to look into rental assistance programs as a backup plan - that's a great suggestion.

my claim took 9 weeks last year before getting approved. ESD is the worst. i heard they expedite things if you claim hardship like eviction notice or utility shutoff. maybe try that angle?

Please don't advise people to claim hardship if they don't have documentation to back it up. This can actually delay claims further if ESD requests proof that doesn't exist. Instead, OP should focus on providing clear documentation of their contract end date and continuing to file weekly claims while waiting.

Update: I uploaded my contract end documentation and then tried calling ESD again today. Still couldn't get through after 14 attempts. This is so frustrating! I'm starting to wonder if I should just give up and try finding another job ASAP even though I've been applying everywhere for weeks with no luck. The stress is making me physically ill at this point.

Don't give up on your claim! Definitely keep job hunting (that's required anyway), but you're entitled to those benefits if you qualify. The documentation upload should help, but honestly, getting through to an actual person at ESD is what usually gets things moving. That's why I ended up using that Claimyr service - pure desperation after weeks of trying. Whatever method you use, talking to an actual ESD agent is going to be your best bet at this point.
