ESD backpay finally approved after 7 weeks - governor's office intervention worked!

After waiting in limbo for nearly 7 weeks, I FINALLY got my unemployment benefits approved yesterday with all backpay included! I was laid off from my manufacturing job in March when our company outsourced to Mexico. Filed immediately but my claim got stuck in 'adjudication' with zero explanation. My savings were completely drained and I was about to miss my second rent payment. Called the regular ESD number maybe 40+ times with no success (either disconnected or 'call volume too high'). What finally worked was calling the governor's office last Thursday at 360-902-4111, selecting option 3, and explaining my situation. The woman was super helpful and flagged my claim for expedition. Less than a week later and BAM - full approval with all backpay! If you're stuck like I was, definitely try this route. Has anyone else had success with this method? Any other tips for people in similar situations?

You got really lucky! The governor's office intervention doesn't work for everyone, but it's definitely worth trying if you've been waiting more than 4 weeks. The key is making sure you have all your documentation in order beforehand (work history, separation details, etc.) so that when they do review your claim, there's nothing missing that would cause further delays. I'd also recommend checking your ESD account for any "Alert" messages that might indicate missing information they need from you. Sometimes they request additional verification but don't make it obvious that's why your claim is stalled.

That's a good point about the alerts. I did notice there was an "Information Needed" notice on my account about three weeks in, but it was really vague. I uploaded my termination letter and final pay stub just in case, and I think that might have helped once they actually looked at my claim.

the goveners office number worked 4 me too but took 2 weeks not 1. better than 9 weeks tho lol. did they make u do the job search requirements retroactively? they told me i had to enter all my job searchs for every week even tho nobody told me this before.

They didn't make me enter job searches retroactively, but I had been doing them and logging them in WorkSource the whole time just to be safe. Did you have to go back and add them all after the fact?

I've been waiting for 5 weeks now and I'm getting desperate. My claim says "adjudication in progress" but when I call, I just get the automated system telling me they're experiencing high call volumes. I've sent 4 messages through the portal with no response. I'm so stressed out about bills. Did anyone at the governor's office explain WHY your claim was stuck? Was there actually a problem they fixed or did they just push it through?? I'm worried there's something wrong with my claim that I don't know about.

The woman at the governor's office didn't give me specific details about why my claim was stuck, just that many claims get "bottlenecked" in adjudication right now due to high volume. When I finally got the approval, there was a note saying they verified my employment separation reason, so I think they just needed to confirm the layoff was legitimate. Definitely give the governor's office a call - you're at 5 weeks which is definitely long enough to justify the request for expedition.

While the governor's office route can work in some cases, it's important to understand that ESD has formal procedures for claims processing that follow specific timelines. The normal adjudication period can indeed take 6-9 weeks currently due to the volume of claims being processed. A few additional tips for those experiencing delays: 1. Check your ESD account dashboard daily for any alerts or action items 2. Ensure your contact information is current in both your ESD and SAW accounts 3. Continue filing your weekly claims without interruption during adjudication 4. Document your job search activities (3 per week) even while in adjudication status 5. If you receive any questionnaires, respond immediately as these often cause the most significant delays The unfortunate reality is that some legitimate claims do require extensive verification, especially in cases involving employment separation disputes or wage verification issues.

They ALWAYS blame "high volume" but its been years since COVID and they still cant get it together!! My neighbor filed 2 weeks ago and got approved in 5 days while I'm on week 7 with no end in sight. Makes no sense!!

Have you all tried using Claimyr? After struggling for weeks to reach someone at ESD, I found this service that gets you through to an actual ESD agent without having to spend hours redialing. Their site claimyr.com has a video demo (https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3) that shows how it works. Basically they navigate the phone system for you and call you back when they've gotten through to an agent. Helped me resolve my adjudication issue when I was in a similar situation last month. Much less stressful than the governor's office route, which I tried first with no success.

is it legit? seems sketchy to use a 3rd party just to talk to ESD. did they need your personal info??

It's completely legitimate. They don't access your ESD account at all - they just help you navigate the phone system to reach an agent. Once you're connected with an ESD rep, the call is between you and the representative directly. Saved me from having to redial hundreds of times.

I want to emphasize something REALLY important based on my experience working with unemployment claims professionally: **CONTINUE FILING YOUR WEEKLY CLAIMS even if you're stuck in adjudication!** I've seen so many people make the mistake of stopping their weekly certifications while waiting for an initial determination, thinking there's no point. Then when they finally get approved, they only get paid from the weeks they actually certified. The system won't backdate those missed weeks without a major appeal process, which can take additional months. Even if your claim is pending, keep doing those weekly certifications faithfully!

Oh my god, thank you for saying this! I almost stopped doing my weekly claims because it felt pointless. I've been faithfully submitting them but was about to give up. Will definitely continue now!

The whole system is BROKEN!! I did exactly what you did - called governor's office after 6 weeks of waiting and they promised to "expedite" my claim. That was THREE WEEKS AGO and still nothing!!! ESD is completely incompetent. I've been doing everything right - job searches, weekly claims, checking messages, and still nothing. Meanwhile my landlord is threatening eviction. How is this even legal??

I'm sorry to hear about your situation. For eviction concerns specifically, I'd recommend contacting the Housing Justice Project in your county, as there are additional protections that may apply while awaiting unemployment benefits. Also, when you called the governor's office, did you get a reference number for your expedition request? If not, I'd suggest calling again and specifically asking for one, then following up weekly with that reference number.

One thing that helped speed up my adjudication was submitting very detailed job separation information. My claim was stuck for weeks until I uploaded a detailed letter explaining exactly why and how I was separated from my employer, with dates, supervisor names, and relevant company policy information. Within days of uploading this documentation (using the document upload tool in my ESD account), my claim moved forward. The more specific information you can provide upfront, the less the adjudicator has to investigate.

That's really helpful! I did upload my termination letter which had the reduction-in-force explanation, but I didn't think to add more details like supervisor names. I'll remember that if I ever need to file again (hopefully not).

anybody else notice wen u finally get thru to ESD they act like ur bothering them?? lady i talked to was so rude like im just trying to feed my family here not trying to scam anyone

YES!! Exactly this! They treat us like we're criminals for requesting OUR BENEFITS that OUR EMPLOYERS paid into! The last agent I spoke with actually sighed loudly when I asked questions. Like sorry for wanting to understand the system YOU'RE in charge of explaining!
