ESD Training Benefits form from TCC - urgent deadline question!
Just received my Training Benefits approval letter yesterday with a form that needs to be filled out by my school (TCC). Not sure about the next steps - do I email TCC's financial aid office to get this filled out? Has anyone gone through this process with Tacoma Community College specifically? I'm worried about the timeline since I just got the letter. Will my regular UI benefits be suspended if I don't get this form back to ESD quickly enough? The letter doesn't clearly explain the consequences of missing deadlines. This is my first time applying for the Commissioner Approved Training program and I don't want to mess it up. Thanks for any help!

You need to take that form to TCC's enrollment services office ASAP! Don't just email it - physically go there if possible. I did mine through TCC last year and learned the hard way that emailing takes forever. You need to connect with an advisor who handles unemployment training documentation - they'll know exactly what to fill out. Your benefits won't immediately stop, but there is a deadline (usually 2-3 weeks from the date on your letter) to return the completed paperwork. If you miss it, ESD might suspend your payments until they receive the form, and you'd need to restart the process.

•Thank you! I had no idea there was a specific 2-3 week deadline. The letter just says to return it "promptly" which isn't very helpful. I'll head to campus tomorrow morning. Do you know if I need to bring anything besides the form?

•This happened to me too at a different school! The registrar missed ONE line and ESD sent it back. So frustrating.

The Training Benefits (TB) process requires you to submit the completed school verification form within 30 days of the determination date on your approval letter. Here's what to do: 1. Take the form directly to TCC's Worker Retraining office - not financial aid. They specifically handle unemployment training documentation. 2. Bring your ESD approval letter, student ID, and your program curriculum sheet. 3. Once completed, make a copy for your records before sending it back to ESD. 4. Submit it by fax or mail (fax is faster) to the contact information listed on the form. Important: While your existing UI benefits continue during this process, failing to return the form will eventually trigger a benefits review. Make sure to continue filing your weekly claims and meeting your job search requirements until you receive confirmation that you're officially in Commissioner Approved Training status.

•This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I didn't know about the Worker Retraining office specifically. Do I need to make an appointment with them or can I just walk in? And should I still be doing my 3 job searches each week while waiting for the TB process to complete?

I went through this exact process with TCC in January. Their Worker Retraining office is in Building 7, but call first (253-566-XXXX) because their hours are limited since 2025 budget cuts. The form needs details about your specific program, credits per quarter, start/end dates, and verification you're making satisfactory progress. The worker retraining coordinator will complete it, but you need to be VERY CLEAR that this is for ESD unemployment Training Benefits. They get confused with the regular worker retraining program paperwork. And YES - keep doing your job searches until you get the official letter saying you're exempt! Some people stop too early and get disqualified.

•yep THIS ^^^ i got in trouble cuz i stopped job searches as soon as i submitted my training paperwork but before i got official approval. ended up with a "failure to look for work" issue and had to do an appeal. total nightmare.

Has anyone tried calling ESD directly to ask about the deadline? I spent THREE HOURS yesterday trying to get through to ask a similar question about my training benefits and couldn't reach anyone. Their phone system is completely broken - it just disconnects after the automated menu. So frustrating!!!

•I had the same problem trying to reach ESD about my training benefits verification! After getting hung up on 5 times, I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual agent. It really works! They have a video showing how it works here: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. The agent I spoke with confirmed that the training benefits form needs to be returned within 30 days, and they can place a note on your account if there's a legitimate delay from the school.

UPDATE: I took everyone's advice and went to the Worker Retraining office at TCC this morning. You were all right - they knew exactly what to do with the form! The coordinator said they process these weekly and will submit it directly to ESD on my behalf by Friday. They also confirmed I need to keep doing job searches until I get the official Commissioner Approved Training status letter, which should arrive about 2 weeks after they submit the form. Thanks everyone for your help! This community is amazing.

•Great news! One more tip: once you receive your official Training Benefits approval, save that letter carefully. You'll need to provide updates at the end of each quarter (your school should provide a form). Also, be aware that if you change your program or reduce credits below full-time, you must notify ESD immediately or risk an overpayment situation.

my sister went thru this with TCC nursing program last quarter and said dealing with esd was WAY harder than nursing school lol. make sure u check ur eservices messages like everyday because sometimes they send important notices there instead of mail and if u miss them ur in BIG trouble. happened to her and she almost lost benefits

•Thanks for the tip about checking eServices messages daily! I've been focusing on my physical mail but will make sure to log in regularly now.

One important thing no one mentioned - when you're in approved training, your job search requirements change but don't disappear completely. Instead of regular job searches, you'll need to submit academic progress reports. TCC should provide these at mid-term and end of quarter. Missing these is the #1 reason people in training programs suddenly find their benefits suspended.
