Can I reapply for ESD benefits after quitting job due to worsening anxiety/depression?
I'm really struggling right now and need advice about my ESD options. Back in April, I had one week left on my unemployment claim but stopped filing because of personal issues. Then I got a seasonal job, but had to quit because my mental health was deteriorating. I found another job after that, but I'm planning to quit this one too because I just can't focus or function properly. My anxiety and depression are worse than ever - which is actually the same reason I was on unemployment initially. I've been seeing a therapist regularly, but honestly I'm at the lowest point in my life right now. Can I reapply for unemployment benefits in this situation? Will they deny me for quitting two jobs? I'm desperate and don't know what my options are.

Whether you can qualify depends on how you document your medical condition. ESD typically considers quitting due to documented medical issues as having "good cause" to leave work. Here's what you need to do: 1. Get documentation from your therapist stating your mental health condition prevents you from working 2. When you apply, clearly indicate you left for medical reasons 3. Be prepared to provide this documentation during adjudication Keep in mind there's a waiting week, and you'll need to be able and available for suitable work that accommodates your condition. Since you've had multiple jobs recently, expect your claim to go through adjudication where they'll review each separation.

•Thank you for the detailed info. Do you know if there's a specific form my therapist needs to fill out? And am I supposed to be looking for work when I'm in this mental state? That's what worries me most.

•This is actually correct advice. Initial denials are common for medical-based separations, especially mental health ones. The appeal process gives you more opportunity to present documentation. Make sure you meet all deadlines for responding to ESD requests - they're very strict about timeframes.

Im going thru something similar!!! Been on and off unemployment for 2 yrs now its so frustrating. The system is NOT designed for people with mental health issues at all. They expect you to just bounce back immediately and do all these job searches when your brain can barely function. Solidarity friend.

•You're so right. Filling out all the ESD paperwork and requirements feels impossible when I can barely get out of bed some days. How are you managing the job search requirement?

You might want to consider standby status instead of regular unemployment if your doctor thinks you'll be able to return to work within 12 weeks. With standby, you can get benefits without having to look for work while you focus on treatment. You'd need your healthcare provider to complete documentation saying you need this temporary period to address your health. Also, be aware that if you're denied initially (which happens often with voluntary quits), the appeal process can take months. Plan accordingly for your financial situation.

•Standby is ONLY for temporary layoffs when your employer expects to rehire you. It's NOT for medical situations - that's completely wrong information. For medical situations, you need to apply for regular benefits and request job search waiver with medical documentation. Please don't spread misinformation about ESD processes.

Have you tried calling ESD directly to ask about your specific situation? I was in a similar spot last year (quit due to anxiety) and after I finally got through to a real person, they were actually quite helpful in explaining my options. The problem is GETTING THROUGH to them... I spent weeks calling that stupid number and getting disconnected.

•I had the same problem getting through to ESD when I needed to ask questions about my medical documentation. I finally used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an ESD agent in about 20 minutes instead of spending days redialing. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3. When you're dealing with anxiety already, the last thing you need is the added stress of calling ESD 50+ times with no answer.

To directly answer your question: Yes, you can reapply, but with multiple voluntary quits, prepare for a thorough adjudication process. Here's what you need to know: 1. For mental health claims, ESD requires documentation from a licensed healthcare provider stating your condition made you unable to continue working 2. You may qualify for a job search waiver if your condition temporarily prevents job searching 3. If you're denied, don't panic - about 40% of initially denied claims are approved on appeal 4. You must still file weekly claims while in adjudication, even if you're not receiving benefits yet 5. Be VERY honest about your work history and reasons for separation - any discrepancies will cause further delays

•Do they ACTUALLY approve appeals tho?? My friend got denied and she had TONS of documentation but they still said no. The whole system is rigged against people who are really suffering imo

•That's only partially correct. While you should file as soon as possible, there's no strict 4-week deadline. However, your effective date can't be backdated beyond the week you apply, so you could lose potential benefits by waiting. Also, if you wait too long, it can raise questions about whether you're truly available for work and actively seeking employment.

Thank you everyone for all this helpful information. I'm going to make an appointment with my therapist tomorrow to discuss getting proper documentation. It sounds like I should: 1. Apply ASAP rather than waiting 2. Be completely honest about quitting both jobs 3. Get detailed documentation about my condition 4. Request a job search waiver if my therapist supports it 5. Be prepared for possible denial and appeal I'm still really anxious about the whole process, but at least I have a clearer picture now of what to expect. It's comforting to know others have been through similar situations.

•That's a great plan. One more tip - keep detailed notes of every interaction with ESD (date, time, who you spoke with, what was discussed). Also save copies of EVERYTHING you submit to them. Their systems sometimes lose documents, and having your own records can save you in case of disputes later.
