Can I leave my ESD claim open during adjudication while starting new job? Need 3 weeks of UI benefits

Got myself in a weird situation and hoping someone can help! I've been in adjudication since June 17th, with my waiting week ending on June 8th. Just landed a new job starting July 1st (yay!), but that means I'm only eligible for 3 weeks of unemployment benefits total. My question is: can I leave my claim open and just stop submitting weekly claims after this week so I can still get paid for those 3 eligible weeks? Or if I close my claim before they resolve the adjudication, will I lose all the money I should be getting? Really don't want to mess this up since I could use those 3 weeks of benefits to catch up on bills before my first paycheck comes in. Anyone dealt with something similar?

DONT close your claim!! If you close it before they pay you, you'll never see that money! Just stop filing weekly claims once you start working. ESD will automatically close your claim after 4 weeks of no activity, but the adjudication will still finish and they'll pay what they owe you for those 3 weeks.

Thank you! That's exactly what I was hoping to hear. Do you know roughly how long adjudication typically takes? I'm getting nervous since I've already been waiting almost 2 weeks.

I was in a similar situation last year. Definitely keep your claim open and let adjudication finish. Just make sure you report your hours worked and earnings honestly when you return to work. If your first day is July 1st, you'll include those hours/earnings on your weekly claim that covers that period. After that, you can stop filing. They'll eventually close your claim automatically, but you'll still get paid for the eligible weeks once adjudication completes.

this is correct advice, i did the same thing this past march. claim stayed open for 4 weeks after i stopped filing then it auto-closed but i still got my back pay for the weeks i was eligible

Has anyone called to ask about ur adjudication yet? My claim took FOREVER to get thru adjudication (like 8 weeks!) and then they only paid me for 5 of the 8 weeks i claimed becuz of some stupid rule I didnt even know about... They're seriously the worst to deal with 🙄

I tried calling but haven't been able to get through. Just get the message about high call volume and then it hangs up on me. Should I keep trying? I really need to know what's happening with my claim.

Try using Claimyr to get through to ESD. Saved me hours of frustration when I was in adjudication earlier this year. You can see how it works at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 and sign up at claimyr.com. It helped me get my adjudication resolved within a week instead of waiting for months. The service basically holds your place in line so you don't have to keep redialing.

Is this legit? I've never heard of this before and I'm always suspicious of services that claim to help with government stuff.

@OP - To directly answer your question: Yes, you should leave your claim open and stop filing weekly claims once you start your new job. The adjudication will continue and you'll still be eligible for payment for those 3 weeks once they resolve whatever issue they're reviewing. Just make sure you've submitted all requested documentation and responded to any questionnaires they've sent you.

Thanks for the clear answer. I've submitted everything they asked for so far. I'll keep checking my online account and make sure I respond to anything new promptly.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but does anyone else wonder if the adjudication won't be completed BEFORE the claim auto-closes? Because I've seen adjudications take MONTHS (mine took 11 weeks in 2025). I think maybe you should call and ask specifically about that scenario?

Even if the claim auto-closes after 4 weeks of inactivity, the adjudication process continues. They'll still resolve it and pay for eligible weeks. I went through this exact situation and got paid for my eligible weeks about 6 weeks after my claim had auto-closed due to inactivity. The system keeps track of everything.

whats the reason for adjudication? some types get resolved faster than others

They're verifying my previous employment. My former employer is disputing that I was laid off - they're claiming I quit, which is completely untrue. I have documentation showing the layoff though, so I'm hoping it will be resolved in my favor.

Based on your situation with the employer disputing your job separation, here's what you should do: 1. Keep your claim open 2. Continue filing weekly claims until your new job starts 3. Report your new employment when it begins 4. Stop filing claims after you start working 5. Make sure all your documentation proving you were laid off has been submitted Your adjudication might take longer since it involves a dispute, but ESD will eventually make a decision. If approved, you'll receive benefits for all eligible weeks, even if your claim has auto-closed by then.

Thank you so much for the clear steps. I'll follow this exactly. I've already uploaded my layoff notice and final pay stub showing the separation code. Hopefully that will be enough evidence.

That's exactly why I recommended Claimyr earlier. It's specifically designed to solve the problem of not being able to get through to ESD on the phone. Most people don't know about it, but it's been a lifesaver for many claimants dealing with adjudication issues.
