Started new job after 5 weeks on ESD - do I need to formally close my claim?
After being on unemployment for 5 weeks, I started a new full-time job today (yay!). During those 5 weeks, I filed all my weekly claims properly and did all the job search activities. Do I need to do anything special to close my unemployment claim, or do I just stop filing weekly claims? Also, my claim has been in adjudication this whole time - will I still get paid for those 5 weeks once ESD finishes processing everything? I'm worried that starting work might somehow affect my eligibility for those previous weeks.

Congrats on the new job! You don't need to formally close your claim - just stop filing weekly claims. ESD will automatically deactivate your claim after two weeks of not filing. And yes, assuming you meet all eligibility requirements, you should still get paid for those 5 weeks once adjudication is complete, even though you're working now. The new job doesn't affect your eligibility for the weeks you were unemployed.

•That's such a relief! Thank you. Do you know approximately how long adjudication usually takes these days? It's been 5 weeks already and I'm getting worried.

•Oh! I didn't even think about that. Thank you for the heads up. I'll definitely make sure to report my first day of work on the last claim I file.

I had the EXACT SAME situation last year. Unemployed for 6 weeks, then got a job while still in adjudication. Just stop filing weekly claims, but if you're still in that 'waiting week' of the new job where you haven't been paid yet, you CAN file for that partial week (just report your hours worked even if not paid yet). The frustrating part is that adjudication can take FOREVER. Mine took almost 9 weeks total! I was working for 3 weeks before my unemployment benefits finally paid out. The system is broken!!!

•Wow, 9 weeks is a long time! It's so stressful waiting for the money, especially when bills are piling up. Did you do anything special to speed up the process or just wait it out?

Former ESD employee here. Everyone's given you good advice. Just to add a few technical details: 1. Your claim stays active for one year from the application date, but benefits stop when you stop filing weekly claims 2. Your adjudication will continue regardless of your employment status 3. Make sure your final weekly claim accurately reflects any hours worked in that week 4. If your adjudication is for a simple issue, you should get a determination in 3-6 weeks typically 5. For more complex issues, it can take 8-10 weeks unfortunately Have you tried calling ESD to check on your adjudication status? They might be able to tell you what's causing the delay.

•Thank you for the detailed explanation! I've tried calling ESD at least a dozen times but always get the 'high call volume' message and get disconnected. It's incredibly frustrating. Is there a better time of day to call or a special number I could try?

I had the same experience trying to reach ESD - impossible! I finally used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that holds your place in line and calls you when an agent is available. Saved me literally hours of redial attempts. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 Once I got through to ESD, they resolved my adjudication issue in minutes - turned out it was just waiting for someone to review it. Worth trying if you're still stuck in a few days.

•I hadn't heard of that service before. I'll check it out if I don't see any progress in the next week. Thanks for the suggestion!

congrats on the new job! i just wanted to share that i was in adjudication for 7 weeks and then suddenly got all my payments at once. then 2 days later i got a job offer lol. the timing is always weird with these things. but yeah just stop filing and youll be fine.

•Thanks! That timing is definitely ironic but I'm glad it worked out for you. Hoping mine comes through soon too!

One thing nobody mentioned - if your new job doesn't work out within the year, you can restart your claim without filing a whole new application. Just log back in and start filing weekly claims again. That happened to me when a contract job suddenly ended after 2 months. Made things much easier!

•That's really good to know! I'm hoping this job works out long-term, but it's reassuring to know I have that option if something unexpected happens. Thanks!

Quick update for you - ESD recently announced they're working through a backlog of adjudications from December/January. If yours started around that time, that might explain the delay. They've apparently hired additional staff to address the backlog, so hopefully you'll see movement soon. Just keep checking your account for updates.

•Thanks for the update! That's helpful context. I'll keep an eye on my account. At least now I know the delay isn't because I did something wrong.
