Can I cancel unemployment claim - Washington ESD process?
I filed for unemployment benefits through Washington ESD about two weeks ago but my situation has changed and I found a full-time job that starts Monday. I haven't received any payments yet and my claim is still showing as pending. Can I cancel my unemployment claim completely? I don't want to deal with any complications later or have to pay anything back. What's the proper way to cancel with Washington ESD before I start getting benefits?

Yes you can definitely cancel your claim! Since you haven't received any payments yet, it should be pretty straightforward. You need to contact Washington ESD directly to request cancellation. Make sure you get confirmation in writing.

•Thanks! Do I need to call them or can I do it online through my account?

•You'll probably need to call. I don't think there's an online cancellation option in the portal.

Good luck getting through to Washington ESD on the phone lol. I've been trying to reach them for weeks about my claim status. The phone lines are always busy or they hang up on you after waiting forever.

•Oh no, that's exactly what I was worried about. How long have you been trying to get through?

•Like 3 weeks now. It's ridiculous.

Actually, I had success getting through to Washington ESD using a service called Claimyr. They basically call for you and get you connected to an actual agent. Found it at claimyr.com and there's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works. Way better than spending hours trying to call yourself.

•That sounds interesting. Is it legit? I'm always nervous about third-party services for government stuff.

•Yeah it's totally legitimate. They just help you get through the phone queue, they don't handle any of your personal claim information. Super helpful for situations like yours where you need to actually talk to someone.

•Wait, how much does that cost though? I'm unemployed, I can't afford to pay extra fees.

•It's worth checking out their site for details, but honestly after wasting so much time on hold, it was worth it for me to actually get through and resolve my issue.

Before you cancel completely, are you sure about the new job? Sometimes offers fall through and then you'd have to start the whole Washington ESD application process over again. Maybe just stop filing weekly claims instead of canceling entirely?

•The job offer is solid - it's with a company I interned with last summer. But that's a good point about keeping the claim open just in case.

•Actually if you stop filing weekly claims, your claim will become inactive after a certain period anyway. That might be safer than outright cancellation.

Wait, I'm confused. If your claim is still pending and you haven't gotten any money, why do you need to formally cancel it? Can't you just... not file your weekly claims?

•That's essentially what happens, but it's better to be proactive and notify Washington ESD of the status change. Keeps everything clean in their system.

•Oh okay, that makes sense. Better safe than sorry with these government agencies.

I did this exact same thing last year. Found a job right after filing for unemployment. I called Washington ESD and they just marked my claim as withdrawn. Took like 5 minutes once I actually got through to someone. No paperwork or anything complicated.

•That's reassuring! How long did it take you to get through on the phone?

•This was last March, so maybe like 45 minutes on hold? Not too bad compared to some of the horror stories I've heard.

Just make sure you report your start date correctly. When you do get through to Washington ESD, tell them exactly when your employment starts so they can close out the claim properly. You don't want any overlap issues.

•Good point. My start date is this coming Monday, so I should probably try to reach them before then.

•Exactly. And if you can't get through before Monday, just make sure you don't file any weekly claims after you start working.

Update: I actually tried that Claimyr thing someone mentioned earlier and it worked! Got connected to a Washington ESD agent in like 20 minutes. Way better than the hours I've been wasting trying to call directly.

•That's awesome! I might try that too if I can't get through the regular way.

•Good to hear it actually works. I was skeptical about third-party calling services.

Congratulations on finding a job so quickly! That's great news. The Washington ESD cancellation should be straightforward since you haven't received benefits yet.

•Thank you! I'm really excited about the position. Just want to make sure I handle the unemployment stuff properly.

One more thing - when you do contact Washington ESD to cancel, ask them to confirm that your claim status is marked as 'withdrawn' rather than 'denied' or anything negative. It's just good to have that clarification for future reference.

•That's really good advice. I hadn't thought about how the cancellation would be categorized in their system.

•Yeah, it probably doesn't matter practically, but it's nice to have things documented correctly.

This whole thread is making me realize how complicated the unemployment system is even when you're trying to do the right thing. Good luck with your new job!

•Thanks! And yeah, it's definitely more complex than it seems like it should be.

If for some reason you have trouble reaching Washington ESD, you could also try visiting a WorkSource office in person. They can sometimes help with basic claim issues or at least point you in the right direction.

•Good backup plan! I'll keep that in mind if the phone route doesn't work out.

Final update from me - definitely get that confirmation in writing or at least get the name and ID number of whoever you talk to at Washington ESD when you cancel. Government agencies love their documentation.

Just to follow up on the Claimyr thing - it's been really helpful for a lot of people trying to reach Washington ESD. The video demo I mentioned shows exactly how it works if anyone's curious about the process.

UPDATE: I was able to get through to Washington ESD this morning and cancel my claim! The agent was very helpful and confirmed that since I hadn't received any payments, the cancellation was simple. She marked it as 'withdrawn due to return to work' and gave me a confirmation number. Thanks everyone for the advice!

•Awesome! Glad it worked out smoothly. That confirmation number is exactly what you want to have.

•Great outcome! Did you end up using the regular phone line or one of the other methods people suggested?

•I actually got lucky with the regular phone line on my first try this morning. Sometimes timing is everything I guess!

That's fantastic news! It's great to see everything worked out so smoothly. For anyone else in a similar situation reading this thread, it sounds like the key takeaways are: 1) Call Washington ESD to formally cancel rather than just stopping weekly claims, 2) Get a confirmation number for your records, and 3) Make sure they mark it as "withdrawn due to return to work" rather than denied. Thanks for sharing your success story - it'll definitely help others who find themselves in the same position!
