How to cancel unemployment benefits with Washington ESD - need to stop my claim
I just got hired for a full-time position starting Monday and need to cancel my unemployment claim with Washington ESD immediately. I don't want to accidentally collect benefits I'm not entitled to and end up with an overpayment issue later. Is there a specific form I need to fill out or do I just stop filing my weekly claims? I've been on unemployment for about 2 months and want to make sure I do this correctly to avoid any problems.

Congratulations on the new job! You don't technically 'cancel' your claim - you just report your return to work on your next weekly claim filing. When you file this week, report your start date and hours worked. Washington ESD will automatically close your claim once you're working full-time.

•Thanks! So I should still file this week even though I'm starting work? I was worried about filing incorrectly.

•Yes, definitely file and report your work. That's how Washington ESD knows to close your claim properly. Better to report than not file at all.

Make sure you report the EXACT date you start work, not just the week. I made the mistake of being vague about my start date and it caused confusion with my claim status later.

•Good point - I start Monday the 13th so I'll make sure to put that exact date when I file.

You'll want to keep filing weekly claims until Washington ESD officially closes your claim. Even if you're working full-time, continue reporting your hours and wages. The system needs this information to properly end your benefit year. Don't just stop filing or you might have issues if you need to reopen your claim later.

•This is important advice. I stopped filing when I got a job thinking I was being helpful, but then had problems when that job didn't work out and I needed benefits again.

•Oh wow, I definitely don't want that kind of headache. I'll keep filing until they tell me to stop.

If you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD about this, I'd recommend trying claimyr.com - they help you get through to an actual agent without waiting on hold forever. I used them when I had questions about reporting work and it was super helpful. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ that shows how it works.

•Never heard of that service but might be useful. I've tried calling Washington ESD so many times and can never get through.

•Thanks for the tip! I might check that out if I run into any issues with my final claim filing.

ugh why is this so complicated?? shouldn't there just be a cancel button somewhere in the online system? every other service has a way to cancel easily

•I think it's designed this way to make sure people report their work income properly. If there was just a cancel button, people might use it incorrectly.

•i guess that makes sense but still annoying when you're trying to do the right thing

Pro tip: when you file your final weekly claim, make sure you answer 'yes' to the question about being able and available for work UNTIL your actual start date. If you start work on Wednesday, you were still unemployed Monday and Tuesday of that week and eligible for partial benefits for those days.

Carmen Lopez
•That's a great point - I wouldn't have thought about the partial week aspect. So I might still get a small payment for the few days before I start?

Zoe Papanikolaou
•Exactly! Washington ESD calculates benefits based on the days you were unemployed during that week. Don't leave money on the table that you're legally entitled to.

I had to do this last year when I got hired suddenly. Just report everything honestly on your weekly claim - your last day of unemployment, first day of work, and any wages. The system handled everything automatically after that.

•How long did it take for your claim to officially close after you reported working?

•I think it was about 2 weeks after I filed my final claim. I got a notice in the mail confirming my claim was closed.

Whatever you do, don't just ignore your claim or stop filing without reporting your work. I know someone who did that and Washington ESD kept their claim open for months, then tried to say they owed money back because they should have been reporting work.

•That's terrifying! I would have thought not filing would be the same as saying you don't need benefits anymore.

•Nope, the system assumes you're still unemployed unless you specifically report otherwise. That's why proper reporting is so important.

Congratulations on the job! Make sure you keep all your documentation about your last day of unemployment and first day of work. If any issues come up later, you'll want to have proof of the exact dates.

•Good idea - I'll screenshot my offer letter and keep my first paycheck stub just in case.

The Washington ESD website actually has a section about returning to work, but it's kind of buried in their help pages. Basically says the same thing everyone here is telling you - keep filing and report your work status accurately.

•I'll try to find that page - thanks for mentioning it exists!

One more thing - if your new job doesn't work out within the first few weeks, you might be able to reopen your claim without having to start completely over. But you need to have properly closed it first by reporting your work.

•Hopefully I won't need that, but good to know! This job seems solid but you never know these days.

•Yeah, I had to reopen my claim after a job fell through and I was glad I had followed all the proper procedures the first time around.

If you end up needing to call Washington ESD about this, try calling right at 8am when they open. That's usually the best time to get through, though it's still pretty hit or miss.

•I've tried that so many times and still get busy signals or get disconnected after waiting forever.

•That's exactly why services like Claimyr are helpful - they handle all the calling frustration for you and actually get you connected to an agent.

Just curious - did you have to do the work search requirements while you were job hunting? I'm wondering if those stop immediately when you report starting work or if there's a delay.

Carmen Lopez
•Yeah I had to log 3 job contacts per week. I assume once I report working full-time those requirements would stop, but I'm not 100% sure.

•The work search requirements stop once you're working full-time hours. You won't need to keep logging job contacts after your claim closes.

This thread is super helpful! I'm starting a new job next week too and was wondering about the same thing. Sounds like the key is just to be honest and thorough when filing that final weekly claim.

•Congrats on your new job too! Yeah, seems like honesty and proper reporting is the way to go.

Make sure your employer doesn't delay your start date after you've already reported it to Washington ESD. I had that happen and it created a mess with my claim status that took weeks to sort out.

Carmen Lopez
•Oh no, that would be awful! My start date is definitely confirmed but I'll keep that in mind.

•Yeah, just double-check everything is still on track before you file your final claim. Better safe than sorry.

Does anyone know if you can file your weekly claim early if you're starting work mid-week? Like if I normally file on Sunday but start work Wednesday, can I file Wednesday to report the work immediately?
0 coins
Zoe Papanikolaou
•You should stick to your normal filing schedule. Washington ESD processes claims for specific weeks, so filing early might cause confusion in their system.

•Makes sense - I'll wait until my regular filing day then. Thanks!

The most important thing is getting your final payment calculation right. If you worked part of the week, you might still be eligible for some benefits for the days you were unemployed. Don't accidentally leave money on the table by reporting incorrectly.

•That's what someone else mentioned too - I'll be really careful about reporting the exact dates and hours.

I used that Claimyr service mentioned earlier when I had questions about closing my claim. Really worth it if you need to talk to someone at Washington ESD but don't want to spend hours on hold. Made the whole process much less stressful.

•How much does something like that cost? Is it worth it just for a simple question about closing a claim?

•For me it was worth it because I had been trying to call for days without success. Sometimes peace of mind is worth paying for, especially when dealing with unemployment stuff.

Just want to echo what others have said - definitely keep filing weekly claims until Washington ESD officially closes your claim. I stopped filing too early once and it caused problems when I needed to reopen my claim months later.

Remember to keep all your records of when you reported your work and when your claim was closed. If Washington ESD ever questions anything later, you'll want documentation of what you reported and when.

•Great advice - I'll screenshot everything and keep copies of any notices they send me.

•Yes! I learned this the hard way when they questioned something from months earlier and I had no records to back up what I'd reported.

Congratulations on the new job! I went through this exact same situation last year. The key thing is to keep filing your weekly claims and report your work status accurately. When you file your next weekly claim, make sure to report your exact start date and any hours/wages earned that week. Washington ESD will automatically adjust your benefits and eventually close your claim once they see you're working full-time consistently. Don't worry about "canceling" - just be honest about your work status and let the system handle the rest. The process is actually pretty straightforward once you know what to do!

•Thank you so much for sharing your experience! It's really reassuring to hear from someone who went through the exact same thing. I was getting worried about doing something wrong, but it sounds like as long as I'm honest and thorough with my reporting, the system will take care of the rest. Did you get any confirmation from Washington ESD when your claim was officially closed, or did you just notice it in your online account?
