Are ReliaCards automatically sent to everyone who applies for ESD unemployment benefits?
Hey everyone! I just submitted my first unemployment claim yesterday after my position was eliminated at the tech company I've been with for 3 years. I've heard people mention something called a ReliaCard for receiving benefits, but I'm confused about whether this is automatic or if I need to request it specifically. My ESD account shows my direct deposit info is set up (I entered my checking account during the application), but will they still send a ReliaCard anyway? Or is that only if you don't provide bank details? Just trying to understand what to expect in the coming weeks. Thanks in advance!

No, ReliaCards are not automatically sent to everyone. They're only issued if you choose the debit card option instead of direct deposit for receiving your benefits. Since you already set up direct deposit with your checking account, ESD should deposit your payments directly to that account once your claim is approved and you begin filing weekly claims. You don't need to do anything else regarding payment methods.

•Oh that's a relief! Thanks for clearing that up. I definitely prefer direct deposit anyway.

WRONG!!!! They DO send ReliaCards to EVERYONE regardless of what you pick!!! I set up direct deposit too but still got a stupid card in the mail 2 weeks later. It was empty because my payments were going to my bank, but they waste money sending these useless cards anyway. The ESD system is SO inefficient and confusing!!!

•Hmm that's not what happened to me? I started my claim in January and chose direct deposit. Got my payments in my bank account but never received any ReliaCard... maybe they changed their process recently or something?

•Well it happened to me and 3 other people I know who filed last month!! Maybe they just randomly decide who gets them! Nothing would surprise me with how ESD operates 🙄

I can clarify this based on my recent experience. As of 2025, ESD's policy is that ReliaCards are ONLY issued if: 1. You specifically select debit card as your payment method, OR 2. Your direct deposit information is invalid or cannot be verified If your direct deposit info is properly entered and verified, you should only receive payments to your bank account. However, the system sometimes has glitches where cards are sent erroneously. If you do unexpectedly receive a ReliaCard, you can simply ignore it if your payments are coming through direct deposit correctly. One important note: check your ESD account within 3-5 business days to make sure your direct deposit was properly verified. If there was an issue, they'll switch you to ReliaCard by default.

•Thanks for the detailed explanation! I just checked my account again and it shows my direct deposit status as "verified" so I think I'm good. Will keep an eye on it though.

•I was stuck in the same situation last week trying to resolve an identity verification issue. After like 20 failed attempts, I tried this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an ESD agent in about 30 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/7DieNd3C7zQ?si=26TzE_zGms-DODN3 - totally worth it for me since I was about to lose my mind with the constant busy signals.

•This is actually a good point - sometimes people mistype their account numbers without realizing it. The ESD system doesn't always catch these errors immediately. Always double-check your banking details!

Just to add a bit more info - if your claim is approved and you're eligible for retroactive payments, sometimes those can be substantial. In that case, ESD might split payment between direct deposit and ReliaCard due to bank deposit limits, especially if you're receiving several weeks of benefits at once. This doesn't happen often, but it's another case where you might receive a card even with direct deposit set up.

•That's really good to know, thanks! My initial claim is only for this week forward, so I don't think I'll have retroactive payments, but I'll keep that in mind if anything changes.

One thing nobody mentioned - make sure to check your Correspondence preferences in your ESD account too. Sometimes payment method notifications get sent there rather than to your email, so you might miss important updates about how your payments will be processed. Just another thing to keep an eye on during the waiting period.

•Great tip! Just checked and my correspondence preference was set to online only. Changed it to email notifications too so I don't miss anything important.

Just wanted to share my experience from filing last month - I had direct deposit set up and never received a ReliaCard, which matches what most people are saying here. However, I did get a letter in the mail about 10 days after my claim was approved that confirmed my payment method was direct deposit. So if you're worried about whether everything went through correctly, keep an eye out for that confirmation letter too. It gave me peace of mind knowing the system had everything set up properly. Good luck with your claim!
