just want to say thanks to whoever mentioned claimyr earlier. finally got through to esd and found out i had a job search requirement issue that was holding up my claim. would have never known without talking to an actual person
So if I understand correctly, we're basically at the mercy of economic conditions for extended benefits? That seems backward - shouldn't extended benefits be MORE available when the economy is bad, not less?
Extended benefits ARE more available when the economy is bad - that's exactly when unemployment rates are high enough to trigger them. The current relatively low unemployment rate is why EB isn't available right now.
One last tip - if you're getting close to exhausting your 26 weeks and still haven't found work, start looking into other assistance programs early. Don't wait until the last minute to explore your options.
Bottom line - unemployment is there to help people who lose their jobs get back on their feet. It's not charity, it's insurance you earned. Don't feel bad about using it, just make sure you follow all the rules and actively look for work.
Oh and if your claim gets denied for some reason, don't give up! You have the right to appeal the decision. Sometimes the initial decision is wrong and gets overturned on appeal.
I think it's 30 days from the date of the denial notice, but double-check that. The appeal process can take a while but it's worth it if you think the decision was wrong.
This is another situation where being able to actually talk to an ESD agent helps a lot. If you're thinking about appealing, definitely try to get through to someone who can explain your options. That's where services like Claimyr really come in handy.
Good luck with everything! The first claim is definitely the hardest part. Once you get through it and understand the system, it's much more manageable.
One last tip - if you run into problems and can't reach Washington ESD by phone, that claimyr service someone mentioned earlier is legit. I used it when my claim got stuck and couldn't get through on the regular phone lines. Worth checking out their demo video to see how it works.

One last thing - make sure you register with WorkSource WA as part of your job search requirements. It's integrated with the unemployment system and they sometimes have job fairs or training programs that could help.

•I hadn't heard of WorkSource WA. Is that something I need to do right away when I file?

•You should register within a few weeks of filing your claim. It's part of the work search requirements and they have resources that might help you find a new job faster.

Hope this all works out for you and you don't even need to file. But if you do, sounds like you have a good understanding of what to expect now. The system isn't perfect but it does help when you really need it.
