Just wanted to add that you should still check your account regularly even with open status. Sometimes there are messages or requirements that pop up that you need to address to keep your claim active.
Just remember that even if something does go wrong, it's usually fixable. Washington ESD has issues but they do eventually get things sorted out. Stay on top of your weekly claims and you should be fine.
The waiting is definitely the hardest part. But based on what you've described, it sounds like your claim is processing normally and you should see your first payment next week after you file your second weekly claim.
The Washington ESD website has a lot of helpful resources under their 'Unemployed Workers' section. Videos, FAQs, forms - everything you need to understand the process better.
Wishing everyone the best with their claims. This thread has been really helpful - lots of good advice and support. Shows that we're all trying to help each other navigate this system.
Bottom line: file your claim if you qualify. The employer payment system is designed to spread costs across all employers, not make individual companies pay for specific claims. You've earned this benefit through your work history and payroll deductions.
Just to add one more perspective - I work in HR and can confirm that employers pay into the unemployment system through quarterly taxes. The tax rate is based on the company's experience rating and payroll, but we don't get a bill for individual employee claims. File your claim without worrying about your former employer's costs.

also dont forget unemployment benefits are taxable income so you might want to have taxes withheld from your weekly payments. i learned that the hard way last year

•Oh good point! How do you set that up? Is it an option when you file your weekly claims?

•yeah you can log into your account and change your tax withholding settings. i think they withhold 10% for federal taxes if you choose that option

Still waiting on my adjudication but at least I know what my benefit amount should be now. This thread was helpful for understanding the calculation. Wish Washington ESD would just approve claims faster!

•Hang in there! Most adjudication issues do get resolved eventually, it just takes patience unfortunately.

•PATIENCE?? Some of us can't afford to wait months for benefits we're entitled to!
