This whole thread convinced me to stop procrastinating and just file. Did it this morning and it was way easier than I expected. Thanks everyone!
OK fine, you all convinced me that filing early isn't going to break anything. Going to do it this weekend. Wish me luck dealing with the Washington ESD website...
Washington ESD has been pretty good about helping people who are in mixed work situations like yours. The important thing is that you're actively seeking full-time employment and you lost your main job involuntarily.
Another thing to consider - if you have any issues with your claim or need to talk to Washington ESD about timing questions, getting through by phone can be really tough. I've heard good things about services that help with that.
Yeah someone mentioned Claimyr earlier. Might need to look into that if I run into problems.
Bottom line - file today! Don't overthink it. The longer you wait, the more money you're leaving on the table. Washington ESD isn't going to backdate your benefits to when you lost your job.
Overall Washington ESD's unemployment system works pretty well if you understand the process. Weekly claims on Sunday, payments by Wednesday, keep good records, and you'll be fine. Just don't expect to get rich off unemployment - it's meant to be temporary assistance while you find new work.
Speaking from experience - when something does go wrong with your payments, don't wait around hoping it fixes itself. Get on the phone with Washington ESD immediately or use one of those services like Claimyr to help you get through. The longer you wait, the harder it becomes to sort out.

•No problem! It's definitely not obvious and I bet tons of people get confused about this.

•Exactly - seems like something they should make clearer on their websites.

Just to summarize for anyone else reading - you file unemployment where you WORKED, not where you LIVE. The state where your employer paid unemployment insurance taxes is where you file your claim.

•Perfect summary! That's the key thing I needed to understand.

•Wish I had known this rule years ago when I was in a similar situation.
