When should I start applying for Social Security retirement before January 2025?
I'm planning to officially retire and start collecting Social Security benefits in January 2025 (I'll be 67 in December 2024). This is my first time navigating this process and I'm not sure how far in advance I should start the application. Does anyone know the ideal timeline for contacting SSA? Should I apply 3 months before? 6 months? I've heard different things from friends and family and don't want to mess this up by starting too early or waiting too long. Also, is it better to apply online or make an in-person appointment? I'd appreciate any advice from those who've been through this recently!

I applied for my retirement benefits last year. SSA recommends applying about 3 months before you want your benefits to start. Since you're planning for January 2025, you should start the process in October 2024. The online application is actually really straightforward and much easier than going in person. It took me about 25-30 minutes to complete. Make sure you have your banking information ready for direct deposit and any information about previous marriages if applicable.

•Thank you! October sounds reasonable. Do you remember if they needed any specific documents when you applied online? Should I have my birth certificate scanned and ready?

•I applied 5 months early and it was WAY too soon! They made me verify everything twice because my application just sat there. My nephew waited until just 2 weeks before and got approved faster than me! The system makes no sense.

•They may ask for documents, but usually they can verify most information electronically. If they need anything specific like your birth certificate, they'll contact you after you submit the application. They'll send you a list of any documents they need and instructions for submitting them. Most people don't need to provide anything additional, especially if you've been working and paying into the system for years.

3 months is the MINIMUM!!! I waited until 2 months before and regretted it SO MUCH. My first payment was delayed by almost 6 weeks because they needed extra verification of something from 1994!! Can you believe that?? Start at least 4 months before to be safe. January benefits actually get paid in February (they pay a month behind) so keep that in mind for your budget planning too.

•Oh wow, I didn't realize they pay a month behind. That's really important to know for my financial planning. I'll definitely start at least 4 months early then. Did you apply online or go in person?

•I tried to do it online but the system kept glitching on me!! Then I tried calling for weeks and could never get through. FINALLY gave up and went to the office in person but had to wait 3 hours!!! The whole system is designed to frustrate people I swear.

Social Security retirement specialist here. The official SSA recommendation is to apply 3-4 months before you want benefits to begin. Since you're turning your Full Retirement Age (FRA) right before your intended start date, your situation is straightforward. A few important points: 1. Benefits are paid the month after they're due (January benefits arrive in February) 2. The online application is the most efficient method for most people 3. If you were born on the 1st-10th of the month, your payment comes on the 2nd Wednesday 4. If born on the 11th-20th, payment on 3rd Wednesday 5. If born on the 21st-31st, payment on 4th Wednesday One last tip: if you'll have earnings in 2025, make sure you understand how the earnings limit might affect your benefits if you're working while collecting.

•Thank you for such detailed information! I was born on the 15th, so sounds like I'll get paid on the 3rd Wednesday. I'm fully retiring so no additional earnings to worry about. Does applying online versus in-person affect how quickly the application is processed?

•Online applications are typically processed more quickly as they go directly into the system. In-person appointments can be helpful if you have a complex situation that needs explanation, but for straightforward retirement claims like yours, online is usually faster and more convenient. The processing time is generally the same regardless of application method once it's in their system, but online eliminates mail time or appointment delays.

Whatever you do, DO NOT wait until the last minute! My husband procrastinated and applied only 2 weeks before he wanted benefits to start. His first payment was delayed by almost 3 months! The SSA system works on its own timeline, not yours. They don't care about your financial needs or planning. I would start 4-5 months early just to be safe.

•That sounds awful! Did they eventually backpay him for those months, or did he just lose out on 3 months of benefits?

•He did get backpay for those months, but it was really stressful not knowing when the money would come. We had bills to pay and had to dip into our emergency savings. Not a situation you want to be in when starting retirement!

After weeks of trying to reach someone at SSA about my retirement application and getting nowhere, I tried using Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to a live person. I was skeptical, but they got me connected to an agent in under 10 minutes! Saved me hours of frustration. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU I'd recommend applying online first since it's easier, but if you run into any issues or have questions about your application status, this service was a lifesaver for actually getting a human on the phone.

•Does that really work? I tried calling SS for 2 weeks straight about my medicare premium and kept getting disconnected!!

•It worked for me! I was honestly surprised because I had spent so much time trying on my own. Got connected to an actual SSA representative who could see my application and answer my specific questions about what was causing the delay.

•Thanks for sharing your experience. I should probably locate my important documents now, just in case. Better to be prepared than scrambling at the last minute!

Since you're turning FRA in December 2024, you have a slight advantage. There's no earnings test once you reach full retirement age, so even if you apply 4 months early and get approved quickly, there won't be any reduction in benefits if you start in January 2025. Just make sure when you complete the application that you clearly specify January 2025 as your benefit start date. The system will ask you when you want benefits to begin, and you can select a future month.

•That's good to know! I was a bit worried about applying too early and somehow having benefits start before I wanted them to. Sounds like I can safely apply in September and just specify January as my start date.

•That's what I'm hearing from most people! I'll definitely get started sooner rather than later.
