WEP/GPO frustration - hung up on by SSA while trying to establish protective filing date for spouse with CSRS pension

I'm beyond frustrated with SSA right now! Spent over 2 hours on hold today trying to establish a protective filing date for my wife's spousal benefits (I'm concerned about potential back payments if the Social Security Fairness Act passes). The agent was completely unhelpful and actually HUNG UP on me when I tried explaining our situation! I'm 67, retired from teaching with a CSRS pension, and my wife is trying to understand her options given the GPO reduction. Has anyone had success just showing up at an SSA office without an appointment? Will they at least document our intent to file so we have that protective filing date established? I'm worried about missing out on potential retroactive benefits if this legislative change happens. Any advice from others dealing with the GPO/WEP mess?

same thing happened to my brother. he finally just made an appointment. took like 6 weeks to get in but they did backdate his intent to file. gpo sucks, hope they get rid of it

Be very careful about assuming the SS Fairness Act will actually pass! They've been trying to repeal GPO/WEP for decades with no success. I worked for a school district for 28 years with a non-covered pension and lost almost ALL of my rightful SS benefits from my second career because of this terrible penalty! 😡 Went to my local office THREE times and each time got different information. They told me the "protective filing date" doesn't matter unless there's an actual law change that specifically includes retroactive provisions. Don't get your hopes up about back payments even if you do establish the filing date.

Yes they did document it, but one agent told me it would only be valid for 6 months! Another said differently. The whole system is so confusing when WEP/GPO is involved. I'd still try to get it documented though - can't hurt.
