Sudden WEP/GPO warning appeared in my Social Security account - never worked non-covered job
I just logged into my MySocialSecurity account today and noticed something really concerning that wasn't there during my previous logins. There's now a page stating "YOU HAVE EARNINGS NOT COVERED BY SOCIAL SECURITY" with information about WEP and GPO! I'm completely confused because this definitely doesn't apply to me. I've spent my entire 31-year career working in automotive manufacturing plants where I've always paid Social Security taxes. I've never worked for a state or local government, never been a teacher in a non-covered district, and never worked for the railroad or federal civil service. I literally have no idea why this warning suddenly appeared on my account. I already signed up for Medicare Parts A and B (just got my verification letter today), but I'm planning to delay my Social Security retirement benefits until I reach my full retirement age in 2026. Could the Medicare enrollment have triggered something weird in the system? Should I be worried about this? Do I need to contact the SSA to get this removed from my record? I'm concerned this could affect my future benefit calculations if it's not corrected. Has anyone else experienced something similar?

This is actually pretty common with the SSA computer system lately. The WEP/GPO warning is showing up for lots of people who've never had non-covered employment. It's a glitch that started happening after they updated their system back in January. Don't panic! Check your earnings record year by year - as long as it shows all your covered employment correctly, you're fine. The warning itself won't affect your benefit calculation.

•That's a huge relief! I was freaking out thinking somehow 30+ years of my work history was about to get recategorized. I'll double-check my earnings record like you suggested. Do you think I should still call and have them remove the warning though?

same thing happened to me!!! i think its because of the new software update. my sister works for SSA and she said they're getting tons of calls about this. just another government screwup lol

•It's not just a "government screwup" - it's a complex system transition that affects millions of records. The SSA is aware of the issue and working to correct these false WEP/GPO flags. In the meantime, they've instructed their staff to verify employment history manually when processing retirement applications. Your benefits won't be affected as long as your earnings record is accurate.

DO NOT IGNORE THIS!! I had something similar happen and it turned out that one of my previous employers had miscoded some of my earnings as non-covered!!! It was from a summer job at a county parks department back in the 90s that I barely remembered. YOU NEED TO CALL SSA IMMEDIATELY and verify every year of your earnings record before this messes up your FRA calculation!!!!

•While it's always good to verify your earnings record, the situation you experienced is quite different from what the original poster described. A single miscoded employer would show up in the earnings record itself, not as a general WEP/GPO warning. The warning message is a known system issue affecting many people right now. OP: You should certainly check your detailed earnings record to confirm all employment is correctly categorized, but there's no need for immediate panic. The warning banner itself doesn't change your actual earnings history or benefit calculations.

•I recently discovered a service called Claimyr that helps you skip the SSA phone wait. They call and wait in the queue for you, then call you when they have an agent on the line. Really saved me hours when I was dealing with my retirement application issue. You can check them out at claimyr.com - they even have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU

•WEP stands for Windfall Elimination Provision and GPO is Government Pension Offset. They only apply to people who worked in jobs that didn't pay into Social Security (like certain state/local government positions, some federal jobs, or foreign employment) AND who also qualify for Social Security benefits from other covered work. WEP can reduce your own SS retirement benefits while GPO can reduce spousal or survivor benefits. If you've only worked in regular private-sector jobs where you paid SS taxes, these provisions don't apply to you.

Update: I took everyone's advice and carefully reviewed my earnings record year by year. Everything looks correct - all my factory jobs are showing the right earnings with SS taxes paid. I'm still planning to call SSA about removing that warning message, but I feel much better knowing my actual work history is correctly recorded. Thanks for all the helpful information!

•Glad to hear your earnings record is accurate! One additional tip: when you do speak with SSA, ask them to add a note to your file confirming you have no non-covered employment. This can be helpful when you eventually apply for benefits, as it creates documentation that the WEP/GPO warning was investigated and determined to be incorrect. It may save you some headaches down the road.
