Social Security payment suddenly dropped $100+ at age 70 - anyone else see this reduction?

Just celebrated my 70th birthday last month and got a nasty surprise with my latest Social Security deposit. My monthly payment dropped by $127 compared to what I received in April! I've been collecting since 66 and haven't seen changes like this before. No notification, no explanation letter, nothing from SSA explaining the reduction. I'm currently sitting on hold with the 800 number (going on 1 hour 45 minutes now), but I'm getting increasingly frustrated. Has anyone else experienced a sudden payment drop after turning 70? Could this be related to Medicare premium changes or some weird tax withholding issue? I'm worried they've made some kind of mistake with my FRA calculation that's just now showing up.

same thing happened 2 my sister last yr. SSA said it was cuz of her medicare part D. they took out a bigger premium without telling her!

Thanks for responding! Did she have to call to find this out? I'm still on hold and my estimated wait time keeps increasing instead of decreasing.

This could be related to several things: 1. Medicare premium adjustment (IRMAA) if your income from 2 years ago was higher 2. Tax withholding change that might have been triggered by your age milestone 3. Possible recalculation of benefits due to earnings limit no longer applying at 70 4. Could be a systems error where they're not properly applying your delayed retirement credits I'd recommend checking your MySocialSecurity online account while you wait. Sometimes there are notices there that haven't arrived by mail yet. Also, when you do reach someone, ask specifically about all these possibilities, as representatives sometimes don't check all factors.

I checked my online account but there's nothing there explaining the change. My income has been pretty stable the last few years so I don't think it's IRMAA. I didn't elect any tax withholding changes. I'm really worried it's some kind of calculation error. Thank you for the list - I'll ask about each of these when I finally get through.

Had similar happen when I turned 70 last year. Called SSA and after 3 HOURS ON HOLD discovered they had accidentally applied an early claiming reduction to my record even though I claimed at full retirement age! They fixed it and gave me backpay for the difference. Their computer systems are ancient and mistakes happen all the time. DEFINITELY stay on the phone until you talk to someone.

Oh wow, that's concerning! I didn't even consider they might have applied an early claiming penalty incorrectly. I've been on hold for over 2 hours now and I'm about ready to give up. How many times did you have to call before getting through?

I BET ITS THE GOVERNMENT TRYING TO SAVE MONEY AGAIN!!!! they did this to my husband too and we had to fight for MONTHS to get it fixed. they're HOPING you wont notice or will give up trying to fix it. DONT GIVE UP!!

Not everything is a conspiracy. More likely just a mistake in their system or a legitimate adjustment they failed to notify about. Let's not jump to conclusions.

After working at SSA for 22 years, I can tell you this is most commonly one of three things: 1. Medicare premium adjustments that occur with Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA) calculations 2. A recalculation due to additional earnings being posted to your record 3. A correction of a previous overpayment Most important question: did your 2023 tax return show significantly higher income than your 2022 return? If so, that's almost certainly an IRMAA adjustment. Also, check your recent mail carefully - the notice explaining these changes often looks like junk mail and people throw it away without reading it.

Thank you for this detailed explanation! My income has been very consistent the past several years (just pension and some small investment income), so I don't think it's IRMAA. I haven't received any notices that I can recall, but I'll double check my mail pile. Could they make an adjustment like this without sending ANY notification?

Ugh, I feel your pain with those wait times! I was trying to sort out an overpayment issue last month and couldn't get through after trying for DAYS. A friend told me about this service called Claimyr that got me through to an actual human at Social Security in about 20 minutes instead of hours on hold. Saved my sanity! Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU if you're interested. Way better than wasting your whole day on hold.

does that really work?? my cousin needs to talk to SSA about his disability claim but gives up after being on hold forever

Yep! I was skeptical too but it actually worked for me. They basically navigate the phone system and wait on hold for you, then call you when they have an agent on the line. Saved me like 3 hours of listening to that terrible hold music.

Sometimes small decreases happen with benefits calculations, but $100+ sounds significant. Did you work at all between FRA and 70? Sometimes they adjust benefits based on recent earnings. Also check if you had any overpayments they might be recovering.

I did some part-time consulting work up until last year, but I always reported my earnings. I haven't received any overpayment notices either. It just seems strange that such a big change would happen right after my 70th birthday with no explanation.

I just remembered something important - did you have any voluntary tax withholding on your Social Security? Sometimes when you turn 70, their system triggers a recalculation that can accidentally reset your withholding preferences. This happened to my father-in-law and it took 3 different calls to get it straightened out because the first two representatives didn't check the withholding settings.

I do have voluntary withholding! I have 15% withheld for federal taxes. That could definitely explain it if the withholding got increased accidentally. I'll specifically ask about this when I finally get through to someone. Thank you for this suggestion!

Finally got through after almost 3 hours! You won't believe this - they said it WAS a withholding issue. Somehow my withholding got changed from 15% to 25% when I turned 70. The rep fixed it immediately and said I'll get the difference back in next month's payment. What a relief it wasn't something more serious!

So glad you got it resolved! I recommend checking your payment every single month for the next few months. Their systems sometimes revert changes, especially when they're related to age milestones. And make sure to save a copy of your benefit verification letter with the corrected amount in case you need to reference it later.

That's great advice - thank you! I'll definitely keep an eye on it for the next few months and download a copy of my benefit verification letter. I appreciate everyone's help with this!
