Social Security calling to move up survivor benefits application - is this legit or scam?
I have a phone appointment scheduled with SSA for November 18th to apply for survivor benefits after my husband passed away in August. Today I received a call from someone claiming to be from Social Security saying they want to move my appointment up to today at 2:15 PM central time. They left a voicemail and said they'd call back. I'm at work right now and wasn't expecting this at all! Is this normal for SSA to call and try to move appointments earlier? How do I know if this is legitimate or some kind of scam? I'm worried because I don't have all my documents with me at work. Has anyone had their appointment moved up unexpectedly like this? What info will I need to have ready if this is real?

This sounds suspicious to me! Social Security NEVER calls to move appointments earlier in my experience. They're usually booked out for months and running behind. When they called, did they ask for your SSN or any personal info in the voicemail? That would be a red flag. I would NOT call any number they left - instead call the official SSA number (1-800-772-1213) and verify if this is legitimate. Scammers are getting really sophisticated these days.

•They didn't ask for my SSN in the voicemail, just said they had an earlier opening and wanted to help me get my survivor benefits processed sooner. But I'm definitely nervous about it. I'll try calling the official number to verify, thanks!

I work as a benefits counselor, and while not common, this can actually happen legitimately. Sometimes when there are cancellations or they have extra staff available, SSA will try to move appointments up. However, you should absolutely verify this is legitimate before proceeding. Call the main SSA number (1-800-772-1213) and ask if your appointment was rescheduled. For survivor benefits, you'll need your husband's death certificate, marriage certificate, both your SSNs, his most recent W-2 or tax return, and your direct deposit information. If you're not prepared today, you can always keep your original appointment.

•Thank you so much for this information! I just called the official SSA number and surprisingly it WAS legitimate - they had a cancellation and are trying to process survivor claims faster. I explained I'm at work and don't have documents with me, and they were fine keeping my original November 18th appointment. What a relief to know what's going on!

•This happened to me too but it WAS a scam!!! The number looked official but when I called back they immediately asked for my full SSN and banking info. REAL Social Security never asks for your full SSN on a call they initiated. BE CAREFUL people!!!

I don't trust ANY calls claiming to be from SSA. Too many scams these days. Even if they're not asking for info in the voicemail, they might when they call back. Just keep your original appointment and go in prepared.

•I've been helping my mom with her Social Security issues, and reaching them by phone has been ABSOLUTELY IMPOSSIBLE. 3+ hour wait times, disconnections, can't get through. I finally found a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got us connected to an actual SSA agent in under 10 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU - it was seriously a game changer for verifying appointment changes and getting answers quickly. Might help if you need to confirm if this call is legitimate without wasting your whole day.

Based on my experience working with survivor benefit claimants, this is actually becoming more common. The SSA has been trying to reduce their backlog of survivor claims since they're prioritized over retirement applications. A few things to know: 1) For verification: When they call back, ask them to tell YOU information (like your appointment date/time) rather than you providing information 2) For survivor benefits, you'll need: - Your husband's death certificate - Marriage certificate - Both SSNs - Your bank information for direct deposit - Potentially his last W-2 or tax return - Your birth certificate If they're legitimate and you're not ready, they should be willing to keep your original appointment. The fact that they left a message saying they'd call back rather than demanding an immediate callback is actually a good sign that this might be legitimate.

•This is super helpful, thank you! I did verify it was legitimate by calling SSA directly. I'm going to stick with my original appointment so I can be fully prepared with all documents. I appreciate everyone's quick responses - was panicking a bit at work!

WHATEVER YOU DO DON'T GIVE THEM YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER!!! My uncle got a call just like this and ended up with his identity stolen!!! These scammers are EVERYWHERE!!!

•While it's always good to be cautious, it's important to clarify that during a legitimate appointment with SSA (once verified), they will need to confirm your identity which typically includes verifying your SSN. The key is making sure you're actually speaking with SSA first by calling their official number yourself. But yes, never give information to someone who calls you without verification.

UPDATE: I ended up keeping my original November 18th appointment, but I did verify the call was actually from SSA by calling their main number. Apparently they're trying to process survivor benefits faster and had a cancellation. Thanks everyone for the quick advice - it really helped me figure out what to do while at work without all my documents!
