Social Security COLA adjustment letters for 2025 - why did husband get his but I'm still waiting?
Has anyone else not received their 2025 COLA letter from SSA yet? My husband got his Social Security benefit increase letter last week showing his monthly amount will be $1,828 starting January. It's been 9 days and I STILL haven't gotten mine! We usually get them within a day or two of each other. I'm getting anxious because we need to plan our budget for next year. I checked MySocialSecurity online but it only shows my current benefit amount. Are they sending them out in batches? Should I be worried that something's wrong with my account? When did everyone else get their COLA notices?

They definitely send them out in waves. I got mine on November 12th, but my sister (who lives in another state) didn't get hers until almost two weeks later. I wouldn't worry about it yet - SSA staggers these mailings based on your birthday, benefit type, and sometimes just random batching. Give it until early December before you panic.

•Thank you, that's a relief! Do you know if there's any way to see the updated amount online before the letter arrives? I've looked everywhere in my MySocialSecurity account.

The Social Security Administration typically sends out COLA notices throughout November and early December. The schedule often follows a pattern based on birthday and benefit type (retirement vs. disability vs. SSI). For 2025, they're estimating a 2.5% increase for most beneficiaries. You should be able to see your updated benefit amount in your MySocialSecurity account by early December. If you don't receive your letter by December 10th, that's when I'd recommend calling SSA for clarification. There's rarely any issue with the COLA adjustment itself - it's automatically calculated and applied to all recipients.

•Thanks for the detailed explanation! I'll keep checking my online account and wait until mid-December before getting too concerned.

•Lucky you! I'm still waiting for mine and so is my cousin. They really need to get all these letters out at the same time to avoid causing anxiety for seniors who depend on knowing their exact benefit amounts. It's just one more example of how inefficient the SSA has become!

They definitely send them out in waves throughout November and December. I usually got mine late because my last name starts with W. One year I didn't receive it until after Christmas! But the increase was still in my January payment.

•My last name starts with B and I haven't got mine yet either, so I don't think it's alphabetical. My neighbor (last name P) already got hers last week.

As a retired SSA claims representative, I can confirm they send these notices out in batches over 3-4 weeks. The online MySocialSecurity portal should display your 2025 benefit amount by December 1st regardless of when your paper notice arrives. You can also call SSA at 1-800-772-1213 to verify your new benefit amount, but wait times this time of year are extremely long due to everyone calling about their COLA notices. The 2025 COLA is approximately 2.5%, so you could roughly calculate your new amount by multiplying your current benefit by 1.025 to get a good estimate until your official notice arrives.

•Thank you for this insider info! I tried calling yesterday but gave up after being on hold for 45 minutes. I'll try calculating it myself using that 2.5% estimate and then check online in December.

I've been trying to call SSA for 2 WEEKS about my COLA letter (and other issues) and CANNOT get through to anyone!!! The wait times are ridiculous and half the time they just disconnect you after waiting an hour. The whole system is broken!!! Why can't they hire enough people to answer the phones???

•I had the same problem last month trying to get some Medicare premium questions answered. I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to an SSA agent in under 10 minutes instead of waiting for hours. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU. Totally worth it when you're dealing with time-sensitive benefit questions.

•My husband and I have birthdays in the same month (April) and I got my letter last week but he's still waiting for his. So not sure if that theory holds up!

I wouldn't worry unless you haven't received anything by December 15th. That said, even if you don't get the letter, the increase will automatically be applied to your January payment. The notice is just informational.

•That's good to know! I just like to know exactly what to expect for our budget planning, but it's reassuring that the increase happens automatically regardless of when I get the letter.

Anyone else notice the Medicare Part B premium went up again?? That ate up almost half of my COLA increase! Every year they give with one hand and take with the other. My actual increase after the Medicare premium went up was only $32.

•YES! This happens EVERY SINGLE YEAR and nobody talks about it! The COLA is basically meaningless when they just increase the Medicare premiums at the same time. It's all smoke and mirrors to make it look like they're helping seniors when really we're just barely keeping up with inflation.

I'm in the same boat - still waiting for my COLA letter! My friend who lives across town got hers 10 days ago, but nothing in my mailbox yet. I called the post office thinking it might be a mail delivery issue, but they said SSA mail is usually pretty reliable. It's frustrating not knowing the exact amount for budgeting purposes, especially with all the end-of-year financial planning we need to do. At least it sounds like this is normal based on everyone's experiences here. I'll try that 2.5% calculation method someone mentioned and keep checking my online account in December.

•I'm also still waiting! It's reassuring to hear from so many people that this is totally normal. I was starting to worry something was wrong with my account too. The 2.5% calculation tip is really helpful - at least we can get a rough estimate while we wait for the official letters. Hopefully we'll both get ours soon!
