Social Security COLA adjustment and lump sum payments - anyone received theirs yet?

Has anyone started getting their COLA adjustments in their monthly Social Security checks yet? I'm expecting both the 2025 increase in my regular payments PLUS a lump sum payment for the adjustment period. Not sure if I'm supposed to get a letter first or if the money just shows up in my account. I checked My Social Security online but it still shows my old payment amount. Getting a bit anxious since I've been counting on this increase for my winter heating bills. Anyone know the timeline for these to start hitting accounts?

The COLA adjustments started rolling out this month, but they're being processed in batches based on your birthday. If your birthday is early in the month, you should have it already. Later birthdays will see the adjusted amounts in the next payment cycle. As for the lump sum, that's typically processed separately and can take an additional 2-3 weeks after your first adjusted payment. You should receive a letter explaining the calculations, but sometimes the money arrives before the letter does.

Thanks for explaining! My birthday is on the 24th so maybe that's why I haven't seen anything yet. Do you know if the online account eventually updates to show the new amount before payment day?

Same here! Money showed up but no letter yet. SSA website still showing outdated info. Classic government efficiency lol

I've been calling the SSA for THREE DAYS trying to find out about my adjustment. Can't get through to anyone!!! Always get the "we're experiencing high call volume" message and then they HANG UP ON ME. This happens EVERY YEAR with these adjustments. Why can't they just send everyone a letter BEFORE the changes happen so we know what to expect?? I'm on a fixed income and need to know EXACTLY when this money is coming!!!

I had the same problem trying to reach SSA last month about my benefits verification. After getting disconnected multiple times, I tried using Claimyr.com to get through. It actually worked - got me past the hold queue and connected to an agent in about 20 minutes. They have a video showing how it works at https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU. Saved me hours of frustration and I was able to get my questions answered about the payment schedule.

According to the official SSA schedule, COLA adjustments for 2025 are being implemented as follows: - Direct deposits reflect the new amount on your regular payment date in January - Lump sum payments for any retroactive adjustments are processed within 4 weeks of your first adjusted payment - Notification letters are mailed approximately 15 days before your payment date If you receive SSI, you should have already received both the adjustment and letter in late December. For standard Social Security benefits (retirement, survivors, disability), it depends on your birthday and payment schedule. If your birthday falls between the 1st-10th: Payments on 2nd Wednesday 11th-20th: Payments on 3rd Wednesday 21st-31st: Payments on 4th Wednesday If you started receiving benefits before May 1997, you're paid on the 3rd of the month regardless of birthday.

This is super helpful, thank you! I started getting benefits in 2020 and my birthday is on the 24th, so looks like I'll be in that last batch with payment on the 4th Wednesday. At least now I know when to expect it.

My sister got her increase last week but I haven't gotten mine yet. We both get survivors benefits. Why would hers come first? Is this normal or should I be worried something's wrong with my account?

The difference is likely due to your birthdays. Social Security payments are scheduled based on birth dates. If your sister's birthday is earlier in the month than yours, she'll receive her payments earlier. Nothing to worry about as long as you get yours on your regular payment date this month.

Does anyone know if the COLA adjustment affects the earnings limit for those of us still working while collecting SS? I'm 64 and still work part-time, wondering if that $22,320 yearly limit also went up with the COLA increase.

Yes, the earnings limit does increase with COLA adjustments. For 2025, if you're under full retirement age, the earnings limit increased to $22,920 (up from $22,320 in 2024). For the year you reach full retirement age, the limit is $61,080 (up from $59,520). Once you reach full retirement age, there's no earnings limit at all.

i just checked my bank account again and realized they did NOT apply my medicare part B correctly!!! they took out $209 instead of $174 that i was paying before! anyone else have this problem? now i need to call them too uggggh

The Medicare premium DID go up this year! I remember getting something about that in November. They increased the standard premium from $174.70 to $209.30 for 2025. It's RIDICULOUS but it wasn't a mistake. They're taking more from all of us! 😡

Update: Just received my letter in the mail today explaining the COLA adjustment! It says my first increased payment will be on the 4th Wednesday of this month, and the lump sum for retroactive adjustments will come within 10 business days after that. Going to mark my calendar and stop worrying. Thanks everyone for the helpful info!

Glad to hear you got your letter! The SSA is actually pretty consistent with their payment schedules once you understand how they work. The retroactive lump sum payments sometimes arrive faster than they promise too, so you might see it sooner.

Just wanted to share my experience for anyone still waiting - I'm also on the 4th Wednesday payment schedule and haven't received mine yet, but after reading all these responses I'm feeling much more confident about the timeline. It's really helpful to see that the SSA website doesn't update right away and that the money often shows up before any letters. I've been checking my bank account obsessively but now I know to just wait for my regular payment date. Thanks to everyone who shared their experiences and especially to those who provided the official schedule breakdown - this community is so valuable for getting real information when the official channels are hard to reach!
