Is Social Security still sending February benefit payments after government shutdown threat?

Has anyone received their February Social Security payment yet? My mother (76) is panicking because she heard on some news channel that SS benefits might stop due to the recent government shutdown threat. She got her January payment (around $2,450) on schedule, but now she's convinced February payments are being reduced or stopped completely. I've tried telling her this is probably just a rumor, but she won't listen to me. She's already cutting back on groceries and her medication because she's afraid of running out of money. I need some real examples to calm her down. Has anyone already received their February payment? Was it the full amount? On schedule? Any information would be SO helpful right now.

Your mother's benefits are absolutely safe. Social Security payments are considered mandatory spending and continue even during government shutdowns. I received my February deposit yesterday - full amount, right on schedule. The Social Security Administration has contingency plans specifically to ensure benefits continue uninterrupted during these political situations. The SSA published a statement just last week confirming that all retirement, disability, SSI, and survivors benefits will continue to be paid in full and on time regardless of budget discussions. Your mother can check the status of her payment on MySocialSecurity or by calling the SSA directly.

Thank you so much! I'll show her your comment. She trusts 'real people' more than me telling her what I read online. Did you get a notification or anything before your payment arrived?

My neighbor said the SAME THING!! I was worried too but got my check this morning. The exact same amount as always. The news just tries to scare old people for ratings!!!!!

This is a common misconception that happens during budget discussions. By law, Social Security has its own dedicated funding source through payroll taxes. It's not funded through the regular appropriations process that can be affected by government shutdowns. This is why SS payments continue regardless of other government funding issues.

Great to hear! Was it direct deposit or check? My mom gets direct deposit but is now wondering if the method matters (it probably doesn't, but trying to cover all her questions).

The GOVERNMENT is ALWAYS threatening to cut our benefits!!! I've been on SS for 12 years and every year its the same story. "Oh we might have to cut Social Security" but they NEVER DO because they know we'll vote them ALL OUT if they try!! Your mom shouldn't worry but she should be calling her congressperson to complain!

When I tried checking my payment status last month during all this shutdown talk, I couldn't even get through to SSA on the phone. Waited for 3 HOURS before giving up. Then I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to a real SSA agent in under 15 minutes! They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU The agent confirmed my payment was coming as scheduled and explained that SS funds are separate from the regular budget. Totally worth it for the peace of mind - might help your mom too if she needs to hear it directly from SSA.

This might actually be perfect for her. She's been trying to call SSA herself but keeps getting disconnected. I'll check out that video - thanks!

My father went through something similar last year - got so worried about losing his SS that he stopped taking his heart medication to save money. Please tell your mother that Social Security benefits are considered MANDATORY spending and are NOT affected by government shutdowns. They are funded through the Social Security Trust Fund, which is separate from the general federal budget. Here's what you can do to reassure her: 1. Check her bank account with her on her payment date to confirm the deposit 2. Help her create a my Social Security account at ssa.gov where she can see her payment information 3. Print out the official SSA statement about payments continuing during shutdowns If she's reducing necessary medications, please talk to her doctor immediately. Some pharmaceutical companies have programs to help seniors get medications at reduced costs if finances are a concern.

Thank you for such detailed advice. I didn't realize there was a difference between mandatory and discretionary spending - that explains a lot. I'll definitely help her set up that online account so she can see the status herself.

Social Security payments are distributed on a schedule based on birth dates: - Birth dates 1-10: Second Wednesday of the month - Birth dates 11-20: Third Wednesday of the month - Birth dates 21-31: Fourth Wednesday of the month Beneficiaries who started receiving before May 1997 are paid on the 3rd of each month. Your different payment dates are normal and follow this schedule, not because of any payment delays or reductions.

To clarify some misinformation in this thread: Social Security payments are protected during government shutdowns because: 1. SS benefits are mandatory spending authorized by permanent law 2. The program has its own dedicated funding source (FICA taxes) 3. The Social Security Trust Fund is separate from general federal revenue During a shutdown, while some SSA services might be limited (like processing new applications or answering general questions), payments to current beneficiaries continue without interruption. Your mother's February payment will arrive on her regular payment date based on her birth date or when she first started receiving benefits. The payment will be her full benefit amount plus the 2025 COLA increase that went into effect in January. If she's concerned about her benefits, she should create a my Social Security account at ssa.gov where she can view her payment schedule and benefit amounts directly.

Thank you for breaking this down so clearly. I think a lot of the confusion came from news coverage that didn't distinguish between discretionary and mandatory spending. This is really reassuring.

My friend couldn't get ahold of SSA for TWO WEEKS when she needed to check on her missing January payment!!! They finally figured out it was some bank routing issue but she was almost EVICTED waiting for it to get fixed!!!

This is unfortunately common right now. SSA offices are understaffed and their phone systems are overwhelmed. For urgent payment issues like potential eviction, she should have contacted her local Congressional representative's office. They have liaison channels to SSA and can expedite emergency cases. Worth remembering for anyone facing critical benefits delays.
