Dual retirement filing timeline - when will we receive our first SS benefits payment?
Just submitted our retirement applications today and I'm anxious about planning our budget for the next couple months. Does anyone know the typical timeline for receiving the first Social Security retirement payment after filing? Both my wife (she's 67) and I (just turned 66) submitted our applications on the same day. We're wondering if we'll get our first checks at the same time or if they process them separately. Also, should we expect direct deposit or physical checks for the first payment? I keep hearing different things from friends who retired recently. Any insight from recent retirees about how long we should expect to wait? Thanks!

•Thanks! 5 weeks isn't too bad. Did they backdate anything or just start from when they processed it?

Social Security benefits are paid the month after they're due. The payment date depends on your birth date (and your wife's birth date for her payment): - Born on 1st-10th: Second Wednesday - Born on 11th-20th: Third Wednesday - Born on 21st-31st: Fourth Wednesday If you filed this month, your first payments will likely arrive next month, assuming your applications are processed quickly. Each of you will be paid according to your own birth date schedule, so you may receive payments on different days if your birth dates fall in different ranges.

•That's really helpful information. My birthday is on the 18th and my wife's is on the 7th, so it sounds like we'll get paid on different weeks. Good to know for budgeting purposes.

•This is mostly right but if u guys were born before May 1997 you'll both get paid on the 3rd of the month. The Wednesday schedule is only for newer beneficiaries. Look it up on ssa.gov!

Did you apply online or at the office?? When I filed last year it took FOREVER because there was some issue with my work history they needed to verify. They told me 30 days but it was more like 2.5 MONTHS before I saw my first payment!!! Make sure you check your MySSA account every few days to see if there are any messages or updates. Sometimes they need more info but don't tell you!!!

•We applied online. That's concerning... I hope we don't have to wait that long. I'll definitely keep an eye on the online account. Did they eventually pay you retroactively for the months you were waiting?

•Yes they did backpay me eventually but it was SO STRESSFUL waiting and not knowing when the money would come! Make sure all your documents were uploaded correctly. That was my issue - they said they never received my birth certificate even though I uploaded it!

For both of you filing simultaneously, here's what to know: 1. Processing time varies but typically takes 2-6 weeks 2. First payment comes in the month after your entitlement month 3. You'll receive separate payments based on your birth dates as mentioned above 4. If you signed up for direct deposit, both payments will be deposited electronically 5. If you didn't choose direct deposit, you'll receive debit cards instead of checks One important thing: your wife may have delayed retirement credits if she filed at 67, which could take longer to calculate and might come as a separate adjustment payment later.

•That's a great point about my wife's delayed credits. She did wait until 67 to file. Should we call about that specifically or will they automatically calculate it?

I went through this exact nightmare last year! I filed online and then couldn't get anyone on the phone to confirm if they received it or when I'd be paid. Spent HOURS on hold and got disconnected FOUR TIMES. Finally I used this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me connected to a real person at SSA in about 20 minutes. Totally worth it to confirm everything was in order. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Z-BRbJw3puU. SSA actually had a question about my work history but never contacted me about it! Got it resolved in one call and received my payment the next month.

•That's good to know about Claimyr. I've been worried about getting someone on the phone if we have questions. I might try that if we don't see any updates in our online account soon.

my husband and i retired last october and we both got our first checks in november. they came on different days tho which was weird but whatever. the online system was actually pretty good, we could see when our applications were approved and exactly when the payments would come. it was all direct deposit from the first payment so that was convenient.

If you both applied on the same day but you're different ages, your entitlement dates might be different. ALSO did you both choose the SAME starting date for benefits? You can choose to start benefits up to 6 months retroactively (but only if you're both already at FRA which sounds like you are). If you didn't specify this they will just start them for the month you applied.

•Oh! I don't think we specified a retroactive date. Is it too late to change that? We've both been eligible for a while but just decided to file now.

•It's not too late! Call SSA immediately (within 30 days of filing) and request retroactive benefits. Since you're both at Full Retirement Age, you can request up to 6 months of back benefits. This won't reduce your monthly amount since you're already at FRA. Don't wait on this - it's a simple adjustment but needs to be done soon.

•watch out for the tax implications tho!! if you take 6 months backpay you'll get a lump sum this year that might push you into a higher tax bracket. happened to my brother and he regretted it!!

Just to clarify some points for everyone: 1. If you were born on or before May 10, 1997, you receive benefits on the 3rd of the month regardless of your birth date. 2. If born after May 10, 1997, you follow the birthday-based Wednesday schedule. 3. For direct deposit, your first payment will come electronically - no paper check for the first payment unless you specifically declined direct deposit. 4. Applications filed online typically process faster (2-4 weeks) than those filed through other methods. 5. If both spouses are filing, each application is processed separately, and payment dates are determined individually.

•That's great information, thank you. We should both get paid on the 3rd then since we were born in the 1950s. That makes our budgeting simpler.

•We already had Medicare from when we turned 65, so this was just for the retirement benefits. Good question though!
