TWC benefit year ending in December - can I reapply for UI after 26 weeks?

Hey everyone, I'm getting kinda desperate here. I was laid off from my warehouse job back in January when the company downsized. I've been on regular unemployment for the full 26 weeks (benefits just ran out last week), and I've applied to literally 150+ jobs since then with no luck. My TWC account says something about my 'benefit year ending in December' and that I might be eligible to reapply then. I'm still job hunting every day (retail, warehouse, anything at this point), but my savings are almost gone. Has anyone successfully reapplied after their benefit year ended? Will TWC approve a second round of benefits if I still can't find work by December? I'm worried sick about making rent in November...

Unfortunately, you can't just reapply and get a fresh 26 weeks after your benefit year ends. You need to have worked and earned qualifying wages DURING your current benefit year to be eligible for a new claim. The TWC website is talking about when you can technically submit a new application, not guaranteeing you'll qualify. To qualify for a new claim, you would need to have worked enough during this past year to establish a new base period with sufficient earnings. Have you had ANY employment since your January layoff?

Oh no...I was afraid of that. I've only had two weeks of temporary work through a staffing agency in March. Definitely not enough to qualify for a new claim. So basically I'm out of options with TWC?

It's not 'rigged' - unemployment isn't meant to be permanent. That's why it's called UNemployment insurance! The whole point is to cover you temporarily while you find another job. What exactly were you expecting?

There's a key detail that people aren't explaining clearly. When your benefit year ends in December, you CAN file a new claim, but as others mentioned, you need qualifying wages in your new base period. For December 2025, your base period would be July 2024-June 2025. You said you worked in January before being laid off, and also had some temp work in March. These wages would count in your base period, but the question is whether they meet the minimum threshold. In Texas, you need to have: 1. Wages in at least 2 quarters of your base period 2. Total base period wages of at least 37 times your weekly benefit amount 3. Your highest quarter wages must be at least $2,775 Did you work enough in January plus those two weeks in March to meet these requirements?

Thank you for breaking it down so clearly! I was full-time at the warehouse job in January (about $3,400 that month before taxes), and the temp work in March was only about $1,100 total. So that's only wages in two different quarters, but I'm not sure if it's enough total. My weekly benefit amount was $437, so 37 times that would be... $16,169? I definitely didn't earn that much in just January and those two March weeks.

they told me i could get unemployment extensions after my benefits ran out last year!!! try calling and asking about that

Extensions aren't currently available in Texas. Those were temporary programs during the pandemic and high unemployment periods. The regular UI program is limited to 26 weeks per benefit year and there are no extensions available right now unless Texas hits very high unemployment rates (which it hasn't).

When my UI ran out last year, I couldn't get through to anyone at TWC for DAYS. Kept calling that 800 number and getting busy signals or being disconnected after waiting for hours. Finally, I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got connected to a TWC agent in about 20 minutes. They confirmed I didn't qualify for additional benefits but at least helped me understand my options and pointed me to some emergency assistance programs in my county. There's a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh Definitely worth it when you're desperate for answers from a real person.

It worked for me! I was skeptical too but was at my wit's end trying to get through. The agent I spoke with was actually super helpful about other resources once I explained my situation.

I think youre confusing two different things on the TWC system. The "benefit year ending" message is just telling you when your claim officially closes in the system. It doesn't mean you get more benefits after that date. Your 26 weeks is the maximum unless there are federal extensions (which dont exist right now). Have you applied for SNAP benefits? That could help with food at least while you keep job hunting.

I did apply for SNAP last month and got approved, so that's helping with groceries at least. You're probably right about me misinterpreting the TWC message. I was just hoping there might be some way to get additional help since I've applied everywhere and can't even get interviews lately.

I went through this exact situation in 2023. When my benefit year ended, I reapplied but was denied because I hadn't worked enough during my benefit year. The TWC determination letter specifically said I needed wages in at least 2 quarters AND enough total wages to qualify for a new claim. You might want to look into Texas Workforce Solutions - they have career centers that can help with resume review, job fairs, and sometimes retraining programs. That's how I eventually found a position after being out of work for almost 8 months. Don't give up!

Thank you for sharing your experience. I'll definitely check out the Workforce Solutions center. I've been applying online for months with no luck, so maybe their job fairs or connections would help. Did you have to register for any specific programs there?

You just need to register in WorkInTexas.com first (with a resume uploaded), then visit your local center. They'll have you meet with a career counselor who can recommend specific programs based on your situation. Some have grants for short-term training if you qualify financially and are targeting in-demand fields.

My cousin said theres a thing called "disaster unemployment" you can get sometimes when regular benefits run out??

Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) is only available if you lost your job directly because of a federally declared disaster (hurricane, flood, etc.) and don't qualify for regular UI. It's not an extension program for people who have exhausted regular benefits. Unless there's been a disaster in your area that affected your job search, this wouldn't apply.

Based on what you've shared, you probably won't qualify for a new UI claim in December. However, here are some options to consider: 1. Contact 211 Texas - they can connect you with emergency rent assistance programs in your area 2. Visit your county's Health and Human Services office - some counties have General Assistance programs for people who've exhausted all other benefits 3. Apply at temp agencies daily - even short assignments can help financially and potentially lead to permanent work 4. Check if you qualify for the Texas Comprehensive Energy Assistance Program (CEAP) to help with utilities 5. Some food banks also offer limited financial assistance for emergency situations The key is to be extremely persistent with job applications while seeking alternative support services.

Thank you so much for these resources. I hadn't heard of CEAP or that food banks might have emergency funds. I'll definitely call 211 today to see what rental assistance might be available. I'm already registered with 3 temp agencies but will check in with them more frequently. Feels like I've been doing everything right but still can't catch a break.
