Won TWC appeal after 13 weeks but benefits ending soon - help with extension options?
Finally got some good news last week when I won my TWC appeal after fighting for 13 WEEKS! The determination letter says they'll backpay everything I was owed (about $4,200). But now I'm panicking because I just checked my remaining benefits balance and I only have 4 more payment requests before my benefits run out completely. That's barely a month of support! I've been applying like crazy (5-7 jobs weekly) through WorkInTexas and LinkedIn but haven't landed anything yet. I have a second interview next week but nothing guaranteed. Does anyone know if extensions still exist in 2025? Can I apply for more regular benefits after exhaustion? I'm seriously worried about paying rent when these benefits end. My industry (medical billing) seems totally saturated right now.

Congrats on winning your appeal! That's huge. As for extensions, regular state UI extensions don't exist anymore like they did during COVID. Once your regular benefits are exhausted, that's typically it unless there's a federal program active, which there isn't right now. But don't panic yet. Since your appeal process took 13 weeks, you might still have all your original weeks available. TWC benefits are for a specific dollar amount AND a specific time period. Check your determination letter - it should tell you exactly when your benefit year ends.

•Thank you! My determination letter says benefit year ending 07/18/2025, so I have time left, but the payment amount is definitely running out soon. Just checked my account and it shows $1,250 remaining total. Does that mean I'm just out of luck when it hits zero?

•I've tried calling TWC every day this week but keep getting that stupid automated message saying all agents are busy and to call back later. So frustrating!

I just went through benefit exhaustion last month. Once your regular UI benefits are used up, there are currently no extension programs available in Texas. However, there are two things you should know: 1. When you win an appeal, sometimes your benefits get recalculated. Double-check your Determination of Benefits letter to see if your total benefit amount changed after the appeal decision. 2. If you're struggling with work search, make an appointment with your local Workforce Solutions office. They have free job placement services and sometimes know about jobs that aren't publicly listed. They helped me get interviews in a similar situation. One more tip: if you need to speak with TWC directly about your options, try Claimyr.com - it's a service that gets you through to a TWC agent without the hours of busy signals. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh that shows how it works. I used it to finally reach someone when my benefits were running out, and they explained my options in detail. Definitely worth it for peace of mind.

•Thanks for the detailed info! I'll double-check my determination letter again. I hadn't heard of Workforce Solutions appointments - I'll look into that tomorrow. And that Claimyr thing sounds interesting - has anyone else used it? I'm desperate to talk to an actual human at TWC.

•Thanks! It's a relief after so many weeks of stress, but now I'm worried about what happens next.

THE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO FAIL US!! They make you wait MONTHS for an appeal decision and then when you finally win, your benefits are almost gone! This is exactly what happened to me in January. I won my appeal after 11 weeks of fighting, then had only 6 weeks of benefits left. When I called TWC they just said "sorry nothing we can do" and that was it. No help, no extensions, NOTHING! And that stupid work search requirement of 3 activities weekly is a JOKE because employers don't even respond to applications anymore!!

•I understand your frustration, but there's a reason for how the benefit period works. Your benefit year is still the same regardless of appeal time because it's based on when you first applied. The system isn't perfect, but appeals are actually one of the areas where claimants often win - about 30% of appeals go in the claimant's favor. The work search requirements are frustrating, but logging your applications in WorkInTexas can sometimes lead to help from workforce staff.

I had the exact same problem last fall! What I did was focus HARD on those last 4 weeks of benefits to find something - anything - even if it wasn't ideal. I took a temp position that was below my previous salary just to have income, then kept looking for something better while working. One thing that really helped me was updating my resume to include more keywords from job postings in my field. For medical billing specifically, make sure you're listing all the software systems you know and any certifications. I'm a medical coder and found that highlighting my specific knowledge of ICD-10 codes and EPIC experience got me more calls. Also, have you tried looking at remote positions? There are several medical billing companies that hire remote workers now, especially if you have experience. Might be worth expanding your search geographically since you can work from home.

•That's actually really helpful advice about the resume keywords! I haven't specifically listed all the software I know - mostly just said "experienced with medical billing software." I'll update that today to list EPIC, Meditech, and Centricity specifically. And I have been applying to some remote positions but will cast a wider net. Thank you!

•It's RIDICULOUS that we have to pay a third party just to talk to TWC when our TAXES fund their operations!! But yeah it works, I used it too when I was desperate.

i think their is something called trade adjustment assistance (TAA) if ur industry lost jobs oversees. my frend got it when her customer servce job went to india. not sure if medical billing qualifys but worth asking

•That's actually a good point about TAA, but it's very specific in its eligibility requirements. Your employer would need to have outsourced jobs or been impacted by foreign trade in a documented way, and then a petition has to be filed. It's worth asking TWC about, but don't count on qualifying. There's also the SNAP E&T program that can provide job training while receiving food benefits - that might be something to look into for short-term help.

Update: I used Claimyr this morning and finally got through to TWC after trying for days on my own! The agent confirmed that there aren't any extensions available right now, but she did have some helpful suggestions: 1. She's sending me info about their Short-Term Training program that could help me add some certifications while I'm job hunting 2. She noted that since I won my appeal, I should make sure all my backpay is processed correctly before my benefits exhaust 3. She suggested connecting with the Workforce Solutions office specifically for their medical industry connections Not the miracle solution I was hoping for, but at least I have some direction now. Going to focus on ramping up my applications and looking at adjacent fields where my skills might transfer. Thanks everyone for the advice!

•That Short-Term Training program is excellent! My cousin did it for medical coding certification and got hired within 2 weeks of finishing. Definitely look into that, especially if you're interested in adding something like medical coding to your billing experience. The combination makes you much more valuable to employers.
