TWC Disaster Unemployment for Hurricane Beryl vs April storms - what's eligible?

I'm seeing conflicting info about disaster unemployment assistance in Texas right now. Several people in my Facebook groups are claiming that the current disaster unemployment is ONLY for those storms from back in April, not for Hurricane Beryl damage/effects. I lost a week of work when our workplace flooded during Beryl and my boss said I should apply for disaster benefits, but now I'm confused about eligibility. Does anyone know for sure if Beryl damage qualifies for the current disaster unemployment assistance through TWC? The TWC website doesn't make it very clear which disasters are covered under the current applications.

The Disaster Unemployment Assistance (DUA) is specific to each declared disaster event. The April storms and Hurricane Beryl are separate events with separate disaster declarations. If you go to the TWC disaster assistance page, you'll see that there are different application periods and different counties listed for each disaster. If your county was included in the Beryl federal disaster declaration, you should be eligible to apply for DUA for that specific event (not the April storms). Just make sure you apply within the deadline period for Beryl specifically, which should be 30 days from when it was announced for your county.

Thanks for clarifying! Do you know where I can find the list of counties covered under the Beryl declaration? I'm in Harris County if that helps.

Are you SURE about this? Because when I called TWC last week (it took FOREVER to get through), they told me that the April disaster assistance application period had already CLOSED and that Beryl applications weren't open yet. So confusing!!! This whole system is a mess!!

Let me clear this up with accurate information. There are currently TWO separate Disaster Unemployment Assistance programs active in Texas: 1. April 26-27 Severe Storms: This was for specific counties affected by the April storms. The application deadline for most counties has already passed (it was 30 days after the announcement). 2. Hurricane Beryl: The federal government approved a disaster declaration for Hurricane Beryl on July 19, 2025. Affected counties include Harris, Galveston, Brazoria, Fort Bend, Montgomery, Liberty, Chambers, and several others. The application deadline will be 30 days from the announcement date. To apply for Beryl-related DUA: - You must have lost work directly due to Hurricane Beryl - Your workplace or self-employment must be in one of the federally declared disaster counties - You must not qualify for regular unemployment benefits - Apply through TWC's website or call them directly If your workplace in Harris County was flooded specifically due to Beryl, you should qualify for the Hurricane Beryl DUA, not the April storms DUA.

This is super helpful! So it sounds like I AM eligible since my workplace flooding was definitely from Beryl and I'm in Harris County. I'll try applying through the website, but I've heard the system is really overloaded right now.

I tried applying online for Hurricane Beryl DUA yesterday and the TWC website kept crashing. Called the hotline and got nothing but busy signals for 3 hours. Finally I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) and got through to a TWC agent in about 15 minutes. The agent confirmed that Hurricane Beryl has its own separate disaster assistance program and I was able to complete my application over the phone. They even have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh The agent told me that each federally declared disaster gets its own DUA program with its own application period and eligibility requirements. So whoever told you it's only for April storms was definitely wrong.

Does this claimyr thing actually work? I've been trying to get through to TWC for days about my regular unemployment claim AND to ask about the disaster assistance

Yes, it worked for me when nothing else did. I was skeptical but after two days of constant busy signals I was desperate. Got connected to a TWC agent who confirmed my Beryl DUA eligibility and helped me submit my application properly.

I don't get why TWC makes it soooo hard to reach them! Why don't they just hire more people??! My sister-in-law in Louisiana said their unemployment office answers calls in like 20 minutes max.

This whole system is INSANE!!! I've been trying to find clear info about the Beryl disaster assistance for DAYS and getting nowhere! The TWC website is practically USELESS - doesn't clearly say which counties qualify for WHICH disaster program. I was told by one person that Jefferson County qualified for April storms but NOT Beryl (even though we had MAJOR flooding here from Beryl). Then someone else said we DO qualify for Beryl assistance. WHO KNOWS WHAT'S TRUE ANYMORE?!?!

Jefferson County is included in the Hurricane Beryl disaster declaration. You can find the official list of declared counties on the FEMA website (fema.gov/disaster) or on the TWC disaster assistance page. If you experienced a loss of work directly due to Hurricane Beryl and you're in Jefferson County, you should be eligible to apply for DUA related to Beryl.

UPDATE: I was finally able to apply for the Hurricane Beryl DUA this morning! The TWC agent confirmed that Beryl absolutely has its own disaster assistance program separate from the April storms. She said each federally declared disaster gets its own DUA program, and Hurricane Beryl was declared on July 19th. The confusion might be because some counties overlap between both disaster declarations, but they're definitely separate programs with different application periods. For anyone else affected by Beryl - you need to apply within 30 days of the disaster declaration for your county. The agent said they're getting absolutely swamped with applications right now, so be prepared for long wait times.

I just applied today, so still waiting on approval. The agent said it could take 1-2 weeks because they're processing so many claims right now. I'll update when I hear back!

I had a similar situation back during Hurricane Harvey. People kept saying different things about who qualified. What really matters is if your county was in the federal disaster declaration AND if you lost work directly because of the disaster. My cousin applied for Harvey benefits even though he was laid off BEFORE the storm and got denied. It has to be directly caused by the disaster event.

That makes sense. In my case, we definitely lost work specifically because of Beryl flooding our workplace, so it sounds like I should qualify. Thanks for sharing your experience!
