Can Walmart employees qualify for TWC unemployment benefits? My situation is complicated
I've been working at Walmart for almost 8 months as a part-time cashier (25-30 hours weekly). My manager suddenly cut my hours to just 8 hours per week without explanation! I can't survive on that - I have rent and a car payment. When I asked about getting more hours, they said 'business needs' and that I could apply for full-time positions if they open up. Would TWC approve me for unemployment benefits in this situation? Is this considered a reduction of hours or constructive discharge? I'm still 'employed' technically but with 70% less income. Has anyone successfully filed with TWC while still employed at Walmart but with severely reduced hours? I'm desperate and don't know if I should quit or try to file while still working my pitiful 8 hours.

Yes, you CAN potentially qualify for partial unemployment benefits through TWC if your hours were drastically cut. This is called "partial unemployment." You need to have earned more than your weekly benefit amount in the base period quarters. The key factors TWC considers in your situation: 1. Your hours must have been reduced by no fault of your own (sounds like they were) 2. You must be available for additional work (make sure you are) 3. You'll need to meet work search requirements (3 job contacts per week in Texas) When you file, make sure to report your current wages each payment request period. TWC has a formula where they deduct part of your earnings from your benefit amount. Don't quit your job though! That could jeopardize your claim. File online at ui.texasworkforce.org or by phone.

•Thanks for the info! Do I need to tell Walmart I'm applying for unemployment? I'm worried they'll fire me completely if they find out I filed a claim. Also, when TWC contacts my employer for verification, what exactly do they ask? I'm nervous about this whole process.

my freind at sams club had this same thing happen last year cut from 36 hrs to like 10 hrs a week and she did get unemployment but it was only like $178 a week after they took out the partial work amount, better than nothing tho she said. walmart and sams both do this all the time its how they keep from paying benefits to ppl they hire as fulltime but make parttime

•This is actually a common tactic in retail. They don't technically fire you, but they make working there unsustainable. The good news is that TWC understands this practice. When filing, make sure to document EXACTLY when your hours were cut and any conversations you had with management. Emphasize that this was involuntary and you requested more hours. Don't say anything that sounds like you voluntarily reduced hours or turned down available shifts. Be 100% honest about any current earnings when requesting payments.

Walmart is THE WORST about doing this!!! They did this to me in 2024 and I tried calling TWC for TWO WEEKS straight and couldn't get through to ask about my options!!! Hours and hours on hold just to get disconnected. They cut my hours from 32 to 11 and expected me to just deal with it. The unemployment system is DESIGNED to be frustrating so people give up. I finally just quit and found another job because the stress was too much.

•I was in the same boat trying to reach TWC for my reduced hours claim. After days of trying, I used a service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to a TWC agent in under 25 minutes. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/V-IMvH88P1U?si=kNxmh025COIlIzKh The agent confirmed I was eligible for partial unemployment with my reduced hours and helped me understand exactly how to report my remaining income. Made the whole process much less stressful, and I started receiving benefits the following week. Definitely worth checking out if you're stuck in the TWC phone queue hell.

•That might be true for seasonal adjustments, but my coworkers who've been there 2+ years said this is different. They're cutting hours across all departments, even for long-term employees. And my manager specifically said not to expect hours to increase anytime soon. I can't wait 2-3 months with no income hoping it gets better.

Im going thru similar with Target right now!!! My hours got cut from 28 to 12 and I filed with TWC last week. When I submitted my first payment request yesterday it asked for my hours worked and pay for last week. So I put that in and it said I still qualify for some partial benefits. You definitely dont need to quit!!!! Apply now and keep working the hours they give you

•Did Target get notified as soon as you applied? I'm worried about retaliation. And did you have any issues with the ID.me verification part of the application? I heard that can be a nightmare.

To answer your follow-up question: TWC will notify Walmart when you file a claim, but retaliation for filing unemployment is illegal. Document everything just in case. When TWC contacts employers, they verify: 1. Your employment dates and wages 2. Reason for reduced hours/separation 3. Whether you're still employed and current hours For ID.me verification: Have your driver's license/state ID ready, plus a smartphone for the facial recognition part. Follow the instructions exactly. If you run into technical issues, try a different browser or clear your cache. The verification can be frustrating but is required to prevent fraud.

•Great advice about the ID.me process. One more crucial thing about partial unemployment: when reporting wages to TWC during payment requests, report your GROSS earnings (before taxes) for the week, not what you take home. Many people make this mistake. TWC has a formula where they deduct about 30% of your earnings from your benefit amount. So if your weekly benefit would be $350 but you earned $200 gross from your reduced Walmart hours, you'd still get about $290 in benefits ($350 - $60 deduction).

•HAHAHA NO IT'S WORSE NOW!!! The TWC phone system is COMPLETELY BROKEN in 2025. You call the number and it says "we're experiencing high call volume" and just HANGS UP ON YOU. Not even the option to wait! And the message system on the portal never gets responses. The whole system is designed to make people give up.

One important point about Walmart specifically: make sure you check your employee portal for any write-ups or performance issues before filing. Some Walmart locations try to document performance issues when they're planning to reduce hours, which they later use to contest unemployment claims. If you have a clean record, you're in a much stronger position. Also, Texas law specifically protects workers whose hours are reduced by 20% or more through no fault of their own. Your 70% reduction clearly qualifies. Just be prepared to explain that you remained available for more hours and did not refuse any offered shifts. This is crucial for TWC to determine it was employer-initiated.

•I just checked and I don't have any write-ups or performance issues documented. My last evaluation was actually pretty good (3.5/5). So I'm going to go ahead and apply online tonight. Thank you everyone for the help and advice! I'll update when I hear something back from TWC.

•Congratulations! This is exactly how the system is supposed to work. Partial unemployment benefits exist specifically for situations like this. For the original poster, make sure you continue to document any conversations with managers about requesting more hours. This creates a clear record that the reduction was not your choice. Also, when you do your work search activities, save all documentation in case TWC requests it during a random audit.
