PA UC first week claim confusion - was still employed + direct deposit showing as debit card

Just got laid off on Sept 13th and I'm super confused about two issues with my PA unemployment claim: 1) When I filed my claim, the system is showing my first available week to claim is 9/8-9/13, but I was still working at my job until Friday the 13th! I'm not sure how to answer the availability questions since I was employed most of that week. If I say I wasn't available for work (since I was working), will that mess up my benefits? I don't want to accidentally commit fraud or get my claim flagged. 2) I selected direct deposit when setting up my claim, but when I logged in from my computer instead of my phone, it's showing "debit card" as my payment method. Has anyone experienced this? Is there a way to fix it or will it automatically update after my first certification? I really need the money to go to my bank account ASAP when approved. This is my first time on unemployment in PA and I'm worried about messing something up! Thanks for any help.

For your first question - the benefit week in PA runs Sunday through Saturday, so that's why it's showing 9/8-9/13. When you file your weekly certification, you'll need to report the wages you earned during that partial week. There should be a section where you can enter your gross earnings for that period. You're still eligible for partial benefits if your earnings were below your weekly benefit rate. For the payment method issue, there's a separate section to set up your payment preference under "Payment Information" or similar in your dashboard. PA UC switched to the Money Network cards as the default option, so you need to specifically verify your direct deposit info is complete. Double check all banking info is entered correctly.

Thank you for explaining! So when I certify for that first partial week, do I just report my actual earnings and answer "yes" that I was employed those days? It's just confusing because I don't want to say I was "able and available to work" those days when I was actually at my job. Will that make sense to them?

Thanks! I'll look more carefully for that payment METHODS section. I couldn't find it initially and was getting frustrated.

Regarding your first week question: PA UC considers you "able and available" for work even on days you were working at your job. The question is asking if there was any reason you could NOT have worked if work had been available (like being sick, out of town, etc). So you should answer YES to being able and available. You'll need to report your earnings for that partial week, and they'll reduce your benefit amount accordingly. It's not fraud - the system is designed to handle partial weeks. The payment method sometimes displays incorrectly in the system but works correctly in processing. To be safe, go to Dashboard > Payments > Update Payment Method. You may need to re-enter your bank info there.

That makes so much more sense! I was overthinking the "able and available" question. I'll report my earnings and answer yes to availability since there wasn't any reason I couldn't work. Thank you!

The UC website is TERRIBLE!!!! I had the EXACT same issue with direct deposit. The system defaulted to debit card even though I selected direct deposit. When I called to fix it, I was on hold for 3 HOURS before getting disconnected. Everyone I know has this problem!!!!

The system is frustrating but I managed to get through to a rep by using Claimyr.com. It basically calls for you and puts you in line to speak with an agent. Saved me hours of redialing. You can see how it works on their video demo: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 The rep helped me fix my payment method in minutes - turns out you need to complete a separate verification step for direct deposit that isn't clearly explained.

For that partial first week, when you certify, you'll see a question asking if you worked during the week. Answer Yes, then it will ask how much you earned (before taxes). Enter your gross pay for just those days. It will then calculate any partial benefit you might be eligible for. Pro tip: If your earnings that week exceed your Weekly Benefit Rate, you won't receive payment for that week, but you still need to file for it to establish your claim. Don't skip it!

That's really helpful - I didn't realize I should still file even if I might not get benefits for that partial week. I'll make sure to do that!

Im confused why do u even have to file for that week at all??? Maybe just start with the next full week when u actually werent working?? Seems easier to me but idk

You can't skip weeks in PA UC. If their first eligible week shows as 9/8-9/13, they MUST file for it even if they get $0 for that week. Skipping it could cause problems with their claim, including delays and potentially having to reopen the claim. The system needs continuous certification from the start date.

UPDATE: I found the direct deposit section! It was under Payment Information > Update Payment Method > Direct Deposit. You have to click through several screens to find it. My bank info was there but it wasn't "verified" yet. I had to re-enter it and complete an additional verification step. As for my first week, I'm going to report my earnings and answer yes to being able and available to work since that's what everyone is recommending. Thanks for all the help everyone!

Glad you got it figured out! Just remember for future reference that PA unemployment runs Sunday-Saturday, so anytime you're claiming a week where you worked part of it, you'll need to report those earnings. It can be confusing at first but you'll get the hang of it.
