PA UC confusion: Reopened claim from previous school bus job stuck in progress after company buyout
I'm so confused about my PA UC situation right now. I work for a school bus company where we normally get unemployment during summer breaks. Well, my company just got bought out by another school bus company, so technically I have a "new job" but I'm still doing the same thing. I had some benefit balance left from claims with my previous employer, so I reopened my claim and made sure to list my new employer. But now my claim is just sitting in "progress" status for almost 2 weeks! I'm worried because I don't know if I'm supposed to be claiming from the old company since that's where my benefit year started, or if I'm going to get in trouble for trying to claim against my previous employer while working for the new one? The system is giving me some kind of issue message but doesn't explain what's wrong. Has anyone dealt with an employer buyout situation before? What am I supposed to do here?

Your claim is stuck cuz the system thinks your lying!! they see new job and they think ur working full time trying to claim anyway. You need to call them and explain this is a SEASONAL layoff situation with the same job just different owner. I had almost the same thing happen when my landscaping company changed owners!

•Thanks for responding! Do you think I'll get in trouble for reopening the claim? I don't want them to think I'm trying to commit fraud or something. I'm just so nervous about this whole situation.

This is actually a common situation with school bus drivers and other seasonal employees. What's happening is that when you reopened your claim and listed a new employer, the system automatically flags it for review to determine if you're still eligible under the same benefit year. You need to clarify several things for UC: 1. The exact date of the company transition 2. Confirmation that your job duties remained the same 3. Documentation showing it was just an ownership change 4. Verification that your part-time status is unchanged This isn't fraud as long as you reported everything accurately. The system just needs manual review since company transitions don't fit neatly into their automated processing.

•I used to have the same problem calling PA UC until I found Claimyr. It's a service that basically holds your place in line and calls you back when an agent is available. Saved me hours of frustration when I had a similar issue with my claim last month. Their website is claimyr.com and they have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2. Seriously was a lifesaver with getting my seasonal work situation sorted out.

Actually your both right AND wrong about this. Transportation workers eligibility for summer benefits changed in 2024 with the new rules! It depends on if your new company made you sign a "reasonable assurance" letter for return to work or not. If they did, you might not be eligible at all anymore under the updated guidelines. But if they didn't sign one of those AND your hours got reduced, you could still qualify for partial benefits. Either way your claim needs human review which is why its stuck in PROGRESS limbo.

•Wait, what?? I didn't know anything about this 2024 rule change! My new company did have me sign some paperwork that mentioned returning in the fall, but I didn't realize this could affect my benefits. Now I'm even more worried...

Let me clarify the situation regarding school bus drivers and reasonable assurance letters since there's some confusion here. As of 2025, PA school transportation employees can still collect UC benefits during scheduled breaks (like summer) IF: 1. You don't have "reasonable assurance" of returning to the same position after the break, OR 2. Your wages during school periods are significantly higher than any wages offered during the break period The company buyout creates a technical review issue because the system needs to determine if your new employer has essentially continued the same employment relationship. Since you mentioned it's the same job with a different owner, this should be resolvable. Call UC directly and explain that this is a standard summer break claim for a school transportation employee, but with the complication of a recent employer buyout/acquisition. You'll need to provide: - Date of company transition - Confirmation that your job responsibilities remain unchanged - Any reasonable assurance letter from your new employer This requires manual review, which explains the "in progress" status.

•Thank you so much for this detailed explanation! I definitely have the reasonable assurance letter from the new company. I actually tried calling today but couldn't get through after trying for almost an hour. Going to try again tomorrow morning.

I was in a similar situation last summer when my school district switched bus contractors. Getting through to PA UC was impossible until I used Claimyr.com. They connect you with UC agents by basically waiting on hold for you, then call you when they get someone. Saved me days of frustration and got my claim fixed in one call. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2. Worth it when you're dealing with something complicated like a company buyout situation.

•Yes, it actually does work. I was skeptical too but it got me through to an agent in about 2 hours instead of spending days redialing. The agent cleared up my company transition issue in about 15 minutes once I explained everything.

UPDATE: Finally got through to someone at UC this morning! For anyone with a similar situation: they told me that when there's a company buyout/acquisition, they need to review the claim manually to establish the "successor employer" relationship. The agent put notes on my claim explaining the situation and said it should be resolved within 7-10 days. She also told me to continue filing my weekly certifications in the meantime even though they'll show as "pending" until the issue is fixed. Thanks everyone for your help!

•Great news! Yes, always continue filing your weekly certifications even when there's an open issue. That way once it's resolved, they can process all your payments without delay. The "successor employer" review is exactly what I thought was happening. Glad you got it sorted out!
