PA UC claim under investigation after 2-day job trial - never got paid, now worried

I've been collecting PA unemployment since getting laid off in May (2025). About three weeks ago, I tried a commission-only sales position in my industry. After just 2 days, I realized it wasn't going to work out - the promises they made during the interview were VERY different from reality. I immediately told them I wouldn't continue and never received ANY compensation from them (not a single dollar). Now my unemployment claim suddenly shows it's "under investigation" and when I check my employer history, this 2-day place is listed! I'm really freaking out. Did I mess up by not reporting this? I didn't think I needed to since I never got paid. Could I lose all my benefits over a 2-day job trial that paid me nothing? Has anyone dealt with something similar? What should I do to fix this?

u have to report ANY work, even if no pay. your supposed to report the hrs worked on weekly claim even if $0 pay. thats probably why ur flagged now.

Oh no... I didn't realize that. I honestly thought reporting was only if you earned money. Is there any way to fix this now or am I just screwed?

This happens fairly often. You're required to report any work activity during your weekly certifications, regardless of whether you were paid. The system likely flagged this as an unreported employer when the company filed their quarterly wage reports. What you need to do: 1. Call PA UC to explain the situation (be prepared for a long wait) 2. Ask to provide a statement explaining the 2-day work attempt 3. Request to correct your weekly certifications for those weeks 4. Be honest about why you didn't report it (misunderstanding rather than intentional fraud) If this was an honest mistake and you've been otherwise compliant with your claim, they'll likely just ask you to repay benefits for those days (if any) or issue a warning.

LOL good luck "calling" PA unemployment. better set aside 6 hours to sit on hold - if you even get through! I tried for TWO WEEKS straight last year... busy signal every single time! 🤬

As someone who went through almost the exact same situation, I can tell you it's fixable but kind of a pain. Here's what worked for me: I used Claimyr (claimyr.com) to get through to an actual PA UC agent instead of dealing with busy signals. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 When I finally got through, I explained that I had a short work trial that didn't result in employment, showed I never received pay (bank statements), and that I misunderstood the reporting requirements. The agent helped me update my certifications for those weeks. They did put a hold on one week's payment but eventually released it after reviewing my case. Don't panic - it's considered a non-fraud overpayment if it was an honest mistake.

Thank you! This makes me feel a little better. I'll check out that service because I've already tried calling twice today and couldn't get through. Did they make you pay back anything for those two days?

there so inconsistant with this stuff. my neighbor worked 1 day at amazon, quit, never reported it and nothing happened to his benefits. but my cousin had somethin similar to u and got hit with a 3 month disqualification!!! the system is totally random who they catch and how they punish.

It's not random. It depends on whether the employer reports the work to the state, how the claimant responds when questioned, and whether there's a pattern of unreported work. A one-time mistake with full cooperation is treated very differently than repeated non-reporting or dishonesty during the investigation.

This EXACT thing happened to me in September!!! I tried a bartending job for 3 days and hated it. My claim got flagged too. Here's exactly what happened: 1) I got a letter saying my claim was under review 2) Then I got a phone interview scheduled 3 weeks later 3) During interview they asked why I didn't report the work 4) I explained I didn't know I had to since I never got paid 5) They issued a NON-FRAUD overpayment for just those 3 days 6) I had to pay back about $150 but my claim stayed active JUST BE HONEST with them! Don't try to make excuses or lie. They can tell the difference between honest mistake and trying to cheat the system. I was super worried like you but it worked out fine.

That's reassuring to hear! Did they contact you to schedule the phone interview, or did you have to be the one to reach out? And how long did the whole process take to resolve?

They sent me a letter with the interview date/time about 2 weeks after my claim got flagged. The whole thing took about 5-6 weeks to resolve completely. And yes, I still had to call in to do the interview - they don't call you, you have to call them at the scheduled time using a special number they give you in the letter.

Actually, that's not quite right. PA UC handles these two ways depending on the issue. For some investigations they send you a letter with a call-in number and PIN for a scheduled time. For others, an examiner will call YOU at the number on file. Make sure your phone number is updated in the system and that you answer calls from unknown numbers during this period. If you miss their call, it can significantly delay your case resolution.

UPDATE: I finally got through to PA UC today! Used the Claimyr service someone mentioned and it worked great. The agent was actually really understanding. She said this happens a lot and is considered a "non-willful" error since I genuinely didn't know I had to report unpaid work. They're sending me a questionnaire about the 2-day position that I need to fill out and return. My benefits are on hold until that's processed, but she said as long as I get it back quickly, I should only have a small overpayment for those 2 days I worked (about $82) that I'll need to pay back. Thank you everyone for the help and for calming me down! I was seriously panicking thinking I'd lose everything or get charged with fraud over an honest mistake.
