PA UC claim approved after 3 years - payment on hold until employer appeal deadline?
I'm completely shocked right now. Back in 2022, I applied for unemployment after getting laid off from my warehouse job. I only claimed for about 4 weeks because I found another position pretty quickly and just moved on with my life. Never heard anything back about those weeks, assumed it was denied, and honestly forgot about it. Fast forward to LAST WEEKEND (3 years later!!), I got a letter in the mail saying my claim was approved on May 30, 2025 and that I should see payment in about 10 days. When I checked my UC portal, it shows my claim as "in progress" and says my former employer has until 6/20 to appeal. Does this mean I won't actually get paid until 10 days AFTER the appeal deadline passes? That would be around June 30th. Anyone deal with something similar? I'm confused why they'd send an approval letter saying to expect payment in 10 days if they're still giving my employer time to appeal...

Yes, you'll likely need to wait until after the appeal deadline. PA UC has a weird system where they can approve your claim but still hold payment until the employer's appeal window closes. It's frustrating but pretty standard. The good news is that if your employer doesn't appeal by 6/20, the money should be released shortly after that date. The letter is somewhat misleading because it assumes no appeal will be filed.

•Thanks for explaining! Do you know if I need to do anything on my end while waiting? Should I be checking my portal regularly or will I get another notification when the money is actually released?

This is actually pretty common with backdated claims or ones that took a long time to process. The system automatically generates that "payment in 10 days" letter when they approve the claim, but the appeal period is separate. Your former employer has legal rights to contest the claim until 6/20, so yes, you probably won't see the money until after that date assuming they don't appeal. If they do appeal, you'll get another notice and the process could take even longer. Keep an eye on your portal and your mail.

•Oh great, so it could take even longer! What are the chances they actually appeal after 3 years? It seems weird they'd suddenly care about 4 weeks of UC from 2022.

I actually had almost the exact same situation last year except mine was from 2021! It's called a "delayed determination" and happens when they have a backlog or your claim had some issue they only recently resolved. In my case, I did get paid about a week after the employer appeal deadline passed. The system is SO FRUSTRATING. If you need to talk to someone at UC to confirm the status, try using Claimyr (claimyr.com). I spent 3 days trying to get through on the phone with no luck, then used Claimyr and got connected to a PA UC agent in under an hour. They have a video that shows how it works: https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2. It was worth it to finally get answers about my delayed payment.

•Thanks for the suggestion! I might give that a try if I don't see any movement after the appeal deadline. It's good to hear you eventually got your money in a similar situation!

THIS SYSTEM IS BROKEN!!! I had the EXACT same thing happen and my former employer DID appeal even though it had been years! Then I had to wait ANOTHER 2 months for a hearing, all for them to decide I was eligible anyway. The whole time my claim said "in progress" which tells you NOTHING about what's actually happening!!!!

•EVENTUALLY yes, but it took 5 months from approval to actual payment. And they never updated the portal properly so I was completely in the dark the whole time.

When I got laid off last year I applied for UC and got approved but then found work in like 3 weeks. About 2 months later I randomly got a deposit on my Money Network card for those 3 weeks. Never got any notification or anything, just money in the account! So weird how their system works sometimes. Good luck, hope your money comes through!!

Just to update with some additional clarification: The approval with a pending appeal period is standard procedure. If your former employer doesn't respond by 6/20, the system should automatically release your payment within 3-5 business days after that date. On rare occasions, employers will appeal old claims if they think there's a mistake. However, since you only claimed 4 weeks and it's been 3 years, it's unlikely your former employer will bother. They'd have to demonstrate you weren't eligible at that time, which would require them to dig up old records and attend a hearing. If you want peace of mind, check both your payment status and your message center regularly after 6/20.

Just make sure your banking info is updated in the system if it's changed since 2022! I had a similar situation and my payment went to a closed account, which caused another whole month of delays to get it straightened out.

•Oh! I haven't even thought about that. I definitely need to update my direct deposit info. Thank you!
