PA UC benefit year ended - Anyone successfully reapplied and got approved?

So I just hit the end of my benefit year last week and used up all my available balance ($14,850). The PA UC system is telling me I need to file a new application rather than just continuing with weekly claims. Has anyone gone through this reapplication process recently? I'm worried because my work situation hasn't changed much - I'm still only getting about 15 hours a week at my retail job. Last time I applied it took almost 6 weeks to get approved and I'm freaking out about bills. Did anyone successfully reapply after exhausting benefits and actually get approved? How long did it take? Did they request any additional documentation?

i reapplied in february after my benefit year ended. got approved but took almost 8 weeks!! they wanted new paystubs and everything just like first time. keep filing your weekly claims even while waiting for the new application decision!!!

8 weeks?? That's even worse than I feared. Did they backpay you for all those weeks once you got approved?

This is a normal part of the PA UC process. When your benefit year ends, you must file a new application even if you haven't used all your benefits. The system will evaluate your work and earnings during your base period (the first four of the last five completed calendar quarters). Since you've been working part-time, those earnings will be considered in your new claim determination. Make sure to have documentation ready for: 1. All employment in the last 18 months 2. Accurate earnings information 3. Reason for reduced hours (if applicable) And yes, definitely continue filing weekly claims during the wait period. If approved, you'll receive backpay for eligible weeks.

Thanks for the info. My concern is whether my part-time hours will qualify me for a new claim. I've only been averaging 15 hours per week at $15/hour since my last approval. Is that enough to qualify again?

went thru this last month. my new benefit rate was WAY lower than before because I only had part time work since my original claim. but I still got approved. be ready for a lower weekly amount tho!!!

That's what I'm worried about! Do you mind sharing how much lower your benefit rate was? I was getting $378 weekly before.

my first benefit was $410 weekly and new one is only $215... so about half. depends on how much you earned in your base period

The process for refiling at the end of your benefit year follows specific rules. To qualify, you need to have earned at least 6x your weekly benefit rate in covered employment since filing your initial claim. In your case, that would be approximately $2,268 (6 × $378). With 15 hours weekly at $15/hour over several months, you've likely met this requirement. However, your new weekly benefit amount will be calculated based on your recent earnings, which will likely be lower than your previous rate. The timeline varies, but PA UC is currently processing new applications within 4-6 weeks. Make sure your work search activities are properly documented each week while you wait.

Question - does the 6x weekly benefit amount have to be from a NEW employer or can it be from the same employer you had when first filing? I'm in a similar situation but haven't changed jobs.

I filed a new application in January and THE SYSTEM IS DESIGNED TO MAKE YOU FAIL! They rejected me saying I didn't have enough wages even though I worked part-time the whole year. Then they wanted me to prove I was searching for work even though there were NO JOBS in my field. The whole system is BROKEN!!

I had a completely different experience in March. My benefit year ended, reapplied, and was approved within 3 weeks with no issues. I think it really depends on your specific earnings and whether your application raises any flags in their system. Not everyone has problems.

If you're worried about the wait time, I found a service called Claimyr that helped me actually get through to a PA UC representative when I was in your exact situation. I was on hold for days trying to check on my reapplication status until I tried their service. They got me connected to an agent who actually explained my claim status and why it was taking longer than expected. You can see how it works at claimyr.com or watch their demo at https://youtu.be/CEPETxZdo9E?si=WL1ZzVZWG3KiHrg2 - definitely worth it when you're waiting on money for bills.

I've never heard of this before. Does it actually work? The UC phone lines are always busy when I call.

Yes, it does work. They basically keep calling the UC system for you until they get through, then connect you. Saved me days of frustration and busy signals. I finally got answers about why my reapplication was taking so long.

dont forget to do ur work searches while waiting!!!!! i messed up and didnt do them for 2 weeks thinking i didnt need to while waiting for new approval and they denied me those weeks even tho i was eligible otherwise

Update: I submitted my new application yesterday and the system is showing an "open issue" already. Is this normal? Should I try calling them to find out what the issue is? I'm getting really anxious about this whole process.

Open issues during reapplication are very common. It usually means they're verifying something with your former or current employer, or there might be a discrepancy in reported wages. I would recommend trying to call, but be prepared for long wait times. The online message center is another option, though responses can take 7-10 business days.
