What happens to employer when employee files unemployment with NYS Department of Labor?

I'm thinking about filing for unemployment but I'm worried about what this means for my former employer. They were actually pretty good to me and I don't want to cause them problems. Does filing a claim with NYS Department of Labor hurt the company somehow? I heard something about their taxes going up but I'm not sure if that's true. Can anyone explain what actually happens on the employer side when someone files for UI benefits?

Your employer's unemployment insurance tax rate can be affected by claims filed against them, but it's not an immediate punishment. NYS Department of Labor uses an experience rating system where employers with more claims may see higher UI tax rates in future years. However, if you were legitimately laid off or let go through no fault of your own, this is exactly what the system is designed for. Don't feel guilty about filing a legitimate claim.

That makes me feel better. I was laid off due to budget cuts so it wasn't my fault. I just didn't want to screw over my old boss unnecessarily.

Employers pay into the UI system specifically for this purpose. When you file, NYS Department of Labor sends them a notice asking if they want to contest the claim. If they don't respond or if they agree you're eligible, the claim gets approved. The tax impact is spread out over time, not a huge immediate hit. Most employers understand this is part of doing business.

I had trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor to ask about this same question last month. Ended up using this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that helped me get through to an actual agent. They have a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Really helped me understand the whole process better when I could actually talk to someone at NYS Department of Labor instead of getting the runaround.

How much did that cost? I've been trying to get through for weeks about my adjudication issue.

They don't charge based on the call success or anything like that. Just helped me skip the phone maze and actually reach someone who could explain things properly.

my friend filed unemployment and her old job didn't even contest it. i think most places just accept it unless they think you were fired for misconduct or something. the whole tax thing is calculated yearly anyway so its not like they get a bill the next day

File your claim! That's what the system is for. Your employer has been paying UI taxes all along specifically to cover situations like this. If you were laid off legitimately, there shouldn't be any drama. NYS Department of Labor handles everything and your employer just responds to their inquiry if they want to contest it.
