What are supplemental unemployment benefits from NYS Department of Labor?
I keep hearing about supplemental unemployment benefits but I'm confused about what they actually are. Are these different from regular UI benefits? My friend mentioned something about getting extra money on top of her weekly claim but I can't find clear info on the NYS Department of Labor website. I'm currently receiving $420 per week and wondering if I'm missing out on additional benefits I should be applying for. Can someone explain what supplemental benefits are and how to get them?

Supplemental unemployment benefits (SUB) are additional payments that some employers provide on top of your regular NYS Department of Labor benefits. They're not from the state - they come from your former employer if they have a SUB plan set up. These plans help bridge the gap between your unemployment check and what you were earning. Not all employers offer them, and you'd typically know about it from your HR department or union.

•Oh that makes sense! I worked for a small company so they probably didn't have anything like that. Thanks for clarifying.

yeah my last job had SUB pay but i had to apply separately for it through HR not through the unemployment office, its basically the company paying you extra while you collect UI

Be careful not to confuse SUB with other programs. Some people think supplemental benefits means things like SNAP or emergency assistance, but those are completely different programs. SUB is specifically employer-provided money that supplements your weekly unemployment claim. You'll need to check with your former employer's HR department to see if they offer this benefit.

•I'm so confused by all these acronyms! Is SUB the same as standby status? I keep getting different answers when I try to call NYS Department of Labor but can never get through to anyone.

•No, SUB and standby are totally different things. Standby status is when you're temporarily laid off but expect to return to work within a specific timeframe. SUB is additional money from your employer. If you're having trouble reaching NYS Department of Labor by phone, you might want to try claimyr.com - they help people get through to unemployment agents faster. There's a demo video at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works.

I got SUB payments when I was laid off from the auto plant last year. It was like an extra $200 per week on top of my regular unemployment. But honestly the paperwork was a nightmare and took forever to get approved. You have to coordinate between your union rep and the unemployment office and sometimes the payments get messed up.

THE WHOLE SYSTEM IS SO CONFUSING!!! Why can't they just have one simple website that explains all the different types of benefits instead of making us hunt around for information?? I've been trying to figure out my benefits for weeks and every time I think I understand something new comes up.

Most people don't qualify for SUB anyway so don't stress about it too much
