Strange IRS deposit on my card - related to ny unemployment refund?

Just checked my account and found a deposit labeled 'IRS TREAS 310 TAX REF' for about $830. Totally wasn't expecting this money. Been on unemployment since December after my restaurant closed down. Filed taxes back in April but didn't think I was getting anything back since I had unemployment benefits all those months. Anyone know what this deposit is? Is it related to some kind of tax adjustment with my unemployment benefits? I'm confused because I never got any notice about getting a refund. Should I be worried or is this legit?

That's the tax refund on unemployment benefits. The government made the first $10,200 of unemployment benefits from 2020 tax-free, but only AFTER many ppl had already filed their taxes. So they're sending refunds to people who overpaid. Check your tax transcripts on the IRS website to confirm its legit.

Go to IRS.gov, create an account if u dont have one, and request your tax transcript. Takes like 10 min but worth it to verify whats happening with ur taxes.

I had this same exact thing happen last week! I called the ny unemployment office to verify and confirm but couldn't get through to anyone for 3 days straight. Finally found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me a callback from a real agent in like 2 hours. They confirmed it was legit - part of the American Rescue Plan where they made some unemployment benefits non-taxable. Best money I ever spent to get that peace of mind instead of worrying about it for weeks! Here's a video explaining how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

You actually got someone on the phone from unemployment?? That seems impossible these days. How does this claimyr thing work?

Yeah it shocked me too! They basically call repeatedly for you and then connect you when they get through. No more sitting on hold for hours. They just patch the call to your phone when an agent picks up.

Worked for me! I was skeptical too but I was desperate after trying for days. Got connected within a couple hours and sorted everything out. Not saying it works 100% of the time but definitely better than the alternative of endless waiting.

Yeah it's ur tax refund for unemployment. The government passed that bill making some unemployment $$$ tax free. Alot of people already filed before the change so now IRS is sending automatic refunds. You got lucky! 👍

I haven't gotten mine yet and filed in February!! So annoying how they're doing this in waves. Anyone know how they're deciding who gets their refund when? 🤔

This is 100% the unemployment tax refund from the American Rescue Plan Act. When they changed the law to make the first $10,200 of unemployment benefits not taxable, they had to go back and recalculate all the tax returns that were already filed before that change. That deposit code (IRS TREAS 310) is definitely a tax refund. Nothing to worry about - it's free money! Just double check the amount makes sense based on what tax bracket you're in.

Thanks for explaining! I was freaking out thinking it might be some kinda error and the IRS would want it back later lol

If anyone is still confused about all this unemployment tax stuff, here's what happened: 1. People collected unemployment in 2020 when COVID hit 2. Initially ALL unemployment benefits were taxable as usual 3. Many people filed their 2020 tax returns early in 2021 and paid tax on all their unemployment 4. In March 2021, the American Rescue Plan passed, making the first $10,200 of unemployment benefits tax-free 5. Rather than making everyone amend their returns, the IRS is automatically recalculating and sending refunds 6. These refunds show up as "IRS TREAS 310 TAX REF" deposits The amount varies based on your tax bracket and how much unemployment you received. It's 100% legitimate money that's owed to you. If you need to confirm anything, you can check your tax transcript on IRS.gov or try to call them, but they're extremely backed up. I used claimyr.com to get a callback from the unemployment office to verify some details about my case - MUCH faster than trying to call myself.

does this apply to 2021 unemployment benefits too or just 2020?

Just 2020 benefits as far as I know. The tax break was specifically for the first year of the pandemic when so many people were suddenly unemployed.

Dont spend it yet!!!! Make sure its actually yours. My cousin got a random deposit and it turned out to be an error and they took it back a week later. Call and verify first!

That's terrible advice. This is a known IRS refund code. OP doesn't need to worry.

Have your husband check his transcript on the IRS website. It'll show if they've processed his adjustment yet. They're doing them in batches.

Wondering if I'll get one of these too. I was on unemployment from March-September 2020 and filed taxes in February 2021. Nothing in my account yet. Anyone know if they're still sending these out?

Yep they're still processing them. I just got mine last week and my coworker got his yesterday. They're super behind.

My tax guy told me the IRS is way behind on these adjustments and should be processing them through the end of the year. If you got unemployment in 2020 and filed before the tax law changed in March 2021, you're probably getting something. The IRS TREAS 310 code is definitely their refund code.
