NYS Department of Labor - what are two types of unemployment benefits I can apply for?
I just got laid off from my restaurant job after 8 months and I'm trying to figure out what unemployment benefits I can get. My manager said there might be different types but I'm confused about what NYS Department of Labor offers. I've never filed for unemployment before and don't want to miss out on anything I'm eligible for. Can someone explain what are two types of unemployment I should know about when filing my claim?

The main two types are regular unemployment insurance (UI) and partial unemployment. Regular UI is for when you're completely unemployed or working less than 4 days per week. Partial unemployment is when you're still working but your hours or wages have been reduced. Both go through the same NYS Department of Labor application process on my.ny.gov.

•Thanks! I'm completely out of work so sounds like regular UI is what I need. Do I apply the same way for both types?

There's also standby status if your employer expects to call you back within a specific timeframe. With standby, you don't have to do the job search requirements but you still file weekly claims. It's different from regular unemployment in that you're basically waiting to return to your same job.

•my restaurant put me on standby last year during the slow season, you still get paid the same weekly benefit amount

I've been trying to get through to NYS Department of Labor for weeks about my claim status and it's impossible! The phone lines are always busy and when I do get through I get disconnected. Has anyone found a way to actually talk to someone there?

•I had the same problem until someone told me about claimyr.com - they help you get through to NYS Department of Labor agents. There's a video demo at https://youtu.be/qyftW-mnTNI that shows how it works. Saved me hours of calling and getting hung up on.

•That actually sounds really helpful, I'll check it out. I just need to find out why my weekly claim is stuck in pending status.

whatever you do file ASAP, there's a waiting week and delays are crazy right now with adjudication taking forever

•Good point, I'll file tonight. How long does the whole process usually take once you submit everything?
