NY unemployment system hanging up when reporting partial work hours - anyone else?
Anyone else experiencing this frustrating problem? My boyfriend has been trying to claim his partial unemployment for 3 days straight but keeps getting disconnected from the phone line. Every time he gets to the part where he needs to report how many hours he worked this week, the system kicks him off before he can finish the claim! He's tried calling at different times of day (morning, afternoon, evening) but keeps having the same issue. This is really stressing us out because we're counting on that money. Is the NY unemployment system glitching right now or is there some trick to getting through the whole certification process without getting disconnected?

This has been happening to a lot of people this week! The NYSDOL system is experiencing technical issues with the partial unemployment reporting feature. When entering work hours, try these steps: 1. Make sure you're entering whole numbers only (no decimals) 2. Enter each day's hours individually rather than a weekly total 3. If prompted for earnings, round to the nearest dollar 4. Don't hesitate too long between entries If it still disconnects you, try using the online system through your NY.gov account instead of the phone system. The online portal was updated last month and handles partial claims much better now.

Thank you! I'll tell him to try the online system. He's been so focused on calling that he didn't even think to try filing online. Do you know if there's any penalty for trying multiple days in a row? We're worried about them thinking he's filing fraudulently or something.

OMG YES!! Happened to me twice yesterday and I was FUMING!!! The stupid system hung up on me right when I entered my 18 hours. Called back and same thing happened again! Such a broken system!!!

This seems to be specifically affecting claims with 15+ hours of partial work. If you enter your hours one day at a time instead of the weekly total, it sometimes works better. Also, avoid using the # key to submit your answers - just wait for the automated prompt to continue instead.

I went through this exact same thing last month when I started my part-time job. Kept getting disconnected every single time I tried to report my hours. I was ready to throw my phone across the room! After 4 days of frustration, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com) that got me through to an actual NYSDOL agent in about 10 minutes. The agent manually processed my claim over the phone and explained that their system sometimes glitches with partial claims. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE. Completely worth it for the peace of mind instead of stressing all week about not getting paid.

does that service actually work? sounds sketchy to me. why should we have to pay extra just to use a government service we already pay taxes for???

I was skeptical too, but after days of getting nowhere on my own, I was desperate. It connected me to an agent who fixed my claim immediately. Up to you if it's worth it, but way better than missing a payment or spending hours redialing.

my boyfrend had the same issue but we figured out that if you wait like a half second after each number when entering hours it doesn't disconnect as often. like dont type the numbers too fast. and make sure ur not in a area with bad reception that was our problem too

Thanks for the tip! He'll try slowing down when entering the numbers. The reception shouldn't be an issue since we're on a landline, but maybe the phone system is just super sensitive right now.

This is a frustrating but fairly common issue with the NY unemployment phone system, particularly when reporting variable work hours. The system sometimes misinterprets pauses or certain number combinations as end-of-call signals. For technical reasons, I recommend: 1. Use the online portal at labor.ny.gov if possible - it's more stable for partial claims 2. If you must use phone, call early morning (7:30-8:30am) when system traffic is lowest 3. Enter each value deliberately with consistent timing (not too fast or slow) 4. Avoid using speakerphone, which can cause audio interpretation issues Also important: Keep trying! There's a 7-day window to certify, and technical issues won't count against you if you explain the situation when you finally get through.

Thank you for such detailed help! He tried early this morning following your advice about timing his entries more deliberately and finally got through! He's now fully certified for this week. What a relief!

I've been on partial unemployment for 6 months now and this happens EVERY. SINGLE. WEEK. The phone system is completely broken for partial unemployment claims. I've complained to my state rep, filed formal complaints with NYSDOL, nothing changes. They just don't care about fixing it because most people eventually figure out workarounds. Complete failure of government service.

EXACTLY!! And then they have the nerve to say we filed late or incorrectly when THEIR system is what's broken! So tired of fighting with bureaucracy just to get what we're owed!!

The NYSDOL phone system has a known bug when processing partial unemployment claims with variable hours. The department is aware of the issue but the fix isn't scheduled until next quarter according to their system maintenance bulletin. In the meantime, here's the most reliable workaround: 1. Use the web portal instead (labor.ny.gov) 2. If you must use phone, enter your total hours as individual days (even if you worked the same hours each day) 3. When prompted for earnings, round to the nearest dollar (decimals often trigger disconnects) 4. If asked about availability for work, always say "yes" (1) first, then clarify with the agent later if needed The system particularly struggles with claims reporting 15-25 hours of work per week, which seems to be a data validation issue in their legacy system.

This is excellent advice. I'd just add that if you're still having trouble with the automated system, try calling the alternate certification number: (888) 581-5812. It uses a slightly different call flow that sometimes works better for partial claims. You'll still need your NY.gov ID and PIN.
