NY unemployment shows $0 payment after approval - can't reach anyone on 8124 number

Just got approved for NY unemployment last week (lost my job due to January being super slow) and received my monetary determination letter with my weekly benefit amount. But when I log into my account, everything looks correct EXCEPT it shows "$0" and "$0" for payments. I've been through this exact issue before back in 2023 - it's usually a simple account reboot that fixes it, but you HAVE to talk to someone. I've called the 8124 number literally 100+ times today and keep getting the "we're busy" message and disconnected. Last time this happened, the rep said "oh let me just reboot the account" and boom, fixed in 2 minutes. I know some people suggest purposely entering the wrong ID number twice to get transferred to a real person, but even that isn't working because lines are so jammed. I'm freaking out because I know if I just wait, nothing will happen automatically and I'll get $0. Does anyone have ANY tricks for getting through on the phone? I'm desperate at this point. Thanks in advance!

Ughhh the 8124 nightmare!! I've been through this EXACT thing twice now. The system is SO broken. The trick I used was calling right when they open at 8:00am - not 8:01, exactly 8:00. And keep hitting redial for at least 45 minutes. It took me 32 tries last month but I finally got through. The zero payment thing is usually just a glitch in their ancient system.

Thank you!! I'll definitely try the 8am trick tomorrow. Did you use your cell phone or a landline? I wonder if that makes any difference with their system.

This is incredibly common with NY unemployment in 2025. The $0 payment issue typically happens when there's a flag on your account that requires manual review - could be identity verification, employer contestation, or just a system hiccup. Here's what you need to do: 1. Keep calling, but be strategic. The best times are 8:00 AM exactly when they open, or around 3:30 PM when lunch rushes are over but before end-of-day volume. 2. When you certify weekly, make sure you're answering the work search questions correctly - any inconsistency can trigger the $0 payment issue. 3. Check if your account has any action items or messages in the secure message center - sometimes they post requirements there without notifying you. 4. If it's been more than 10 business days since your initial filing, you can request a callback through the online portal under "Get Help" - it's not instant but they do eventually call. The good news is that once fixed, they'll release all back payments at once, so you won't lose any money you're entitled to.

Thank you so much for this detailed info! I didn't know about the callback request option - I'll definitely try that if I can't get through by phone. And that's reassuring about the back payments. I was worried I might lose money permanently if I can't get this fixed right away.

I was in the exact same situation in February - approved with determination letter but $0 payments showing. After struggling with the phone lines for days, I discovered Claimyr (claimyr.com). It's a service that helps you bypass the busy signals and actually connects you with an agent. I was super skeptical, but they got me through to a real person in about 25 minutes. The agent fixed my account immediately - it was literally just a system flag they needed to clear. All my payments processed the next day including backpay. They have a video showing how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE Definitely worth it when you consider how many hours of frustration it saves. Just having someone actually ANSWER was such a relief after days of trying.

Is this really legit? I'm always suspicious of services charging to access government agencies. Like why should we have to pay to get through to DOL when it's their job to help us?? The whole system is rigged against people who need help the most!

I had the same concerns initially. But it actually worked for me when nothing else did. I think they use some kind of business line system that keeps redialing. Not ideal that we have to use something like this, but when you're desperate to fix a payment issue and get your benefits flowing, sometimes you just need results.

That sounds like exactly what I need right now! I'll check out that video. At this point I've wasted so many hours redialing that anything that actually gets me through would be worth it. My account just needs that simple reboot the rep did last time.

I hate to be that person but you might want to prepare for a long wait. My cousin had the exact same issue last month and it took 3 weeks to resolve even with calling daily. The system is completely overwhelmed right now because of all the January layoffs hitting at once. Have you tried contacting your state representative's office? Sometimes they can intervene on unemployment issues.

3 weeks!? I can't wait that long! I didn't think about contacting my state rep though - that's a good idea, I'll look into that option too. Thanks for the suggestion.

Quick update on calling strategies: NY DOL has recently implemented a new callback system, but it only activates when call volume exceeds certain thresholds. If you're getting the busy message repeatedly, try these specific times which tend to have lower call volumes according to the DOL's own data: - Tuesdays, 10:30am-11:45am - Thursdays, 1:30pm-2:45pm - Wednesdays, after 4:00pm Also, make sure you're calling from the phone number listed in your unemployment profile. Their system prioritizes recognized numbers. If your issue is genuinely just the $0 payment display glitch (which is common), the online message center can sometimes work if you specifically mention "payment showing $0 after receiving determination letter" - this flags it for their IT team rather than general claims agents.

This is so helpful! I'll definitely try the Wednesday afternoon slot tomorrow if I don't get through in the morning. I've been calling from my cell which is the number on my profile, so at least I'm doing that right. I'll also send a message through the portal with exactly that wording. Thank you!

UPDATE: For anyone with this problem (since it's so common) - I called at exactly 8:00:00 am today and got through after only 3 tries!! They fixed my similar issue in literally 2 minutes. The trick is calling PRECISELY when they open. My payments are now processing!!

That's amazing!!! Thanks for updating. I'm definitely using this exact strategy tomorrow morning. Going to set multiple alarms to make sure I don't miss the 8am window!

UPDATE: I got through!!!! I used that Claimyr service someone mentioned above and it actually worked - got me connected to an agent in about 30 minutes. The rep confirmed it was exactly what I thought - just needed a manual refresh on my account to clear the $0 payment glitch. My payments should process within 3 business days including all backpay. For anyone else facing this issue - it really is just a simple fix on their end, but you HAVE to talk to someone. The system won't fix it automatically no matter how long you wait. Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions!

Congrats on getting through! Good to know that your payments will be coming soon. Thanks for updating us - it gives hope to others dealing with the same issue.

Yayyy!! So glad you got it fixed! The relief when you finally get through to a human who can help is just amazing. Make sure you certify on time every week going forward - sometimes these glitches can pop up again if you miss a week.
