NY unemployment determination letter never arrived - filed 3 weeks ago
I filed my NY unemployment claim on 2/10/2025 and completed everything by 2/13. It's been almost 3 weeks and I'm getting worried. I checked over the phone to see if they sent out a determination letter about my claim and the automated system said no letter was sent. Is this normal? I know it can take up to 1-6 weeks to receive payment or a determination letter, but shouldn't the system at least show that a letter is being processed? Has anyone else faced this issue? I'm starting to stress out about whether I did something wrong or if my claim is just sitting there not being processed. Anyone still waiting on their determination letter too?

•That's so frustrating! Have you been able to certify weekly at least? I'm certifying but with no payment coming through.

The determination process is taking longer than usual right now. I filed in January and it took 5 weeks to get my determination letter. The phone system often doesn't show pending letters, only ones that have actually been sent. As long as you've completed all the required forms and responded to any questionnaires, your claim is likely still being processed. Make sure you keep certifying weekly even without the determination letter - you'll get backpay for those weeks once approved.

•Thanks for letting me know! I've been certifying weekly but was getting worried since I can't see any status updates. Is there any way to check if my claim is actually being processed or if it's stuck somewhere?

•Unfortunately, there's no great way to check the status besides calling. The online portal is limited in what it shows. If you've verified your identity, uploaded any requested documents, and completed all questionnaires, then it's likely just in the review queue. The NYSDOL staff shortage is causing major backups right now.

I had exactly the same issue in January. The automated phone system said no letter was sent, but my online account eventually showed "pending" after about 4 weeks. Here's what worked for me: call the claims center right when they open at 8:00 AM. I tried for days during regular hours and could never get through, but calling right at opening time worked. I was able to speak with an agent who verified my claim was being processed and just needed additional review. Three days after speaking with them, my determination letter appeared in my online account and payments started processing the following week.

•Thank you for the tip! I'll try calling right at 8 AM tomorrow. Did you have to do anything special to get through, or just keep redialing?

•I had to redial about 15 times even at 8 AM, but eventually got through. Make sure you have your NY.gov ID, SSN, and PIN ready because they'll ask for verification. Also ask specifically if there are any "holds" on your claim or additional information they need - sometimes there's a simple issue they can resolve on the call.

What if ur claim is denied???????? I'm freaking out bc I also filed same time as u and nothing!!! No letter no payment no nothing!!! I can't pay rent next month if this doesn't come thru!!!! Has anyone had their claim denied with NO NOTIFICATION??? Is that even legal???

•They're required by law to notify you of any denial with appeal rights. If you're denied, you'll definitely receive a letter - it wouldn't just be silent. Most likely your claim is still in the processing queue like the original poster's.

Mine took 7 weeks last year. Just keep certifying.

•7 weeks? That's so long! Did you ever find out why it took so much time?

•Nope. Just suddenly started getting payments one day. Got all backpay though.

Hate to say it but the unemployment system in NY has been a DISASTER since they "upgraded" it last year. My sister filed in December and waited NINE WEEKS for a determination letter! The worst part? The entire time the automated system said nothing was being sent. Their tech is completely broken. They'll backdate your payments but doesn't help when you need money NOW. The whole system needs to be torn down and rebuilt!

•Unfortunately this is happening across the board. I work with unemployed clients and about 60% are experiencing extended wait times for determination letters. The system is severely backlogged, especially for claims that require additional review (which is most of them now after the verification systems were updated).

After helping many clients with this exact issue, I can tell you that the current average wait time for determination letters is 4-6 weeks, sometimes longer. The system often doesn't show pending letters until they're actually sent. A few recommendations: 1. Keep certifying weekly without fail 2. Check your spam/junk folders regularly (sometimes determination emails go there) 3. Login to your NY.gov account daily to check for messages or document requests 4. Make sure you've uploaded all required documents Most importantly, if you need to speak with an agent directly (which I often recommend after the 4-week mark), try Claimyr (claimyr.com). Several of my clients have used it when they couldn't get through on their own. It helps you connect with an unemployment agent quickly instead of spending hours on hold. They have a video that explains how it works: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE - Worth considering if you're approaching week 4 without any updates.

•Thank you for the detailed advice! I've been checking my account daily but haven't seen any document requests. I'll check my spam folder right away. If I don't hear anything by next week (which will be week 4), I might try that Claimyr service. Have your clients generally had good experiences with it?

•Yes, most of my clients who've used Claimyr have been able to connect with agents and get answers about their claims. Often there's a simple issue holding things up that can be resolved once you actually speak with someone. Just make sure you have all your claim information ready when you call.

anyone know if its true they auto-deny if u dont answer phone for the interview? someone told me that

•That's not entirely accurate. If you miss an interview call, they'll usually try once more and/or send a letter with instructions to reschedule. They don't automatically deny just for a missed call, but if you don't respond to their follow-up attempts, then yes, your claim could be denied for non-responsiveness.

I went through this in January! After waiting 5 weeks with no updates, I found out there was a simple wage verification issue that could have been fixed immediately if I'd been able to talk to someone. You absolutely need to get through to an actual person. I finally got through by using Claimyr (claimyr.com) after wasting days trying to call myself. Had a 10-minute conversation with an agent who fixed the issue on the spot, and my determination letter came 3 days later with payments starting the following week. Their video demo explains the process: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE Whatever you do, don't stop certifying weekly! You'll get all backpay once approved.

•That's encouraging to hear! I'm starting to think there might be some simple issue with my claim too that just needs a human to look at it. I'll definitely try to get through to someone next week if I still haven't heard anything.

UPDATE: I finally got through to someone this morning! Called at exactly 8:00 AM and got through after about 20 minutes on hold. Turns out there was a question about my employment dates that was holding everything up. The agent fixed it right away and said I should see my determination letter in the next few days. Thank you everyone for your help and suggestions!

•Great news! This is exactly why getting through to an actual person makes all the difference. Glad you were able to resolve it!
