Is 26 weeks really the max for ny unemployment benefits or can you get more?

Just wondering how many weeks of unemployment benefits you can actually get in New York. Someone told me it's only 26 weeks before they cut you off completely. Is that true? Has anyone been able to get an extension beyond that? I got laid off from my construction job in August when our project funding got pulled, and I've been on unemployment since September. My benefits are going to run out in March and I'm getting worried since the job market in my field is still pretty dead this time of year. Nobody starts major construction until spring and I'm already counting the weeks I have left. Any advice would be appreciated.

Yep, standard NY unemployment is 26 weeks. That's the max for regular benefits. Once upon a time there were extensions but those COVID programs are long gone. When your 26 weeks are up, that's it until you work enough quarters to qualify for a new benefit year. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news 🤷‍♂️

Damn, I was afraid of that. So there's no way to extend it even if the job market sucks in my industry?

0 coins

nope, they dont care if jobs are available or not. the system is designed to push you into any job, not just ones in ur field. its pretty brutal tbh

Thats why I ended up taking that warehouse job. Not what I wanted but UI was running out and bills dont stop comin

After struggling for WEEKS trying to reach NY unemployment by phone, I found this service called Claimyr (claimyr.com). It actually got me connected to a real person who explained all my benefit duration questions. Best money I've spent to finally talk to an agent instead of hearing that stupid automated message on repeat. They have a video showing how it works too: https://youtu.be/Rdqa1gKtxuE

Does this actually work? I've spent literally 40+ hours on hold with them and never get through

0 coins

Yes! It worked for me after I wasted an entire week trying to call myself. They basically keep dialing for you and then connect you when a real person picks up.

0 coins

sounds like one of those ads that pops up everywhere. anyone ACTUALLY try this besides this random account?

0 coins

I was skeptical too but honestly it worked when nothing else did. My claim had been stuck for 3 months and one call fixed it

0 coins

wait hold up - does this actually work or is it just the usual BS? the ny unemployment phone system made me wanna throw my phone against a wall fr

0 coins

It worked for me! After three weeks of trying to get through myself, I got connected within a couple hours. The agent actually explained why my benefits had the wrong calculation too.

26 weeks is the standard, but the secret trick is to find work even part time during your claim period. That makes your benefits stretch longer because they only count weeks where you collect full benefits toward your 26. If you report earnings and get partial benefits some weeks, it can stretch your claim period. Not a perfect solution but better than nothing.

0 coins

Whoa I didn't know this. So if I pick up some side gigs it could actually help me stretch the benefits longer? That's super helpful

0 coins

Exactly. Just make sure you report all earnings or you'll end up owing them money later. But yeah, if you earn under your benefit rate, they reduce your weekly payment but that week doesn't fully count against your 26.

I just went through this last year. 26 weeks max, then you're cut off. But here's a tip - start applying for literally everything 4-5 weeks before your benefits end. The hiring process takes forever these days and you dont wanna have a gap between UI ending and first paycheck. I learned this the hard way and had to use credit cards for 3 weeks 😬

0 coins

Unfortunately yes, 26 weeks is the max for NY unemployment. I just exhausted mine last month. Now Im applying for anything I can find while doing DoorDash to make ends meet. Its rough out here. Start preparing now my dude.

0 coins

How much do you make with DoorDash? Is it actually worth it with gas prices? Thinking about doing this too

0 coins

It depends on your area tbh. Im in Albany and make about $15-18/hr after expenses on weekends, less during weekdays. Not great but better than $0 when benefits run out.

Look into the 599 training program ASAP!! If you get approved for job training while on UI, you can sometimes get benefits extended during your training period. But you need to apply and get approved BEFORE your benefits run out. Call the ny unemployment hotline and ask specifically about the 599 program. Its not well advertised.

0 coins

Wait, there's a training program that can extend benefits? How have I not heard about this before? Do you know where I can find more info?

0 coins

Here's the link: https://dol.ny.gov/599-program It's not guaranteed and you need to be in approved training, but worth looking into! They don't advertise it much because they dont want everyone using it lol

my brother did this for welding school last year! got an extra 12 weeks of benefits while he trained. Now he's making bank as a certified welder

I'VE CALLED NY UNEMPLOYMENT 37 TIMES THIS WEEK AND NEVER GET THROUGH. HOW IS ANYONE SUPPOSED TO ASK QUESTIONS WHEN THEY NEVER ANSWER THE DAMN PHONE?!?!?!

0 coins

Try claimyr.com - that's how I finally got through after weeks of trying. They keep calling for you and connect you when a human finally answers

I'll check it out... I'm at my wits end with this garbage system

As someone who used to work at NYSDOL (quit last year), I can confirm 26 weeks is the maximum under normal circumstances. The system is set up to provide temporary relief, not long-term support. My advice: if you're in construction, look into union apprenticeship programs that start in late winter/early spring. They often take applications in February/March for April start dates, which might align with when your benefits end. Also consider reaching out to temp agencies that specialize in construction - they often have leads on projects starting earlier in the season.

This is really helpful, thank you. Do you have any recommendations for good construction temp agencies in the NY area?

0 coins

Labor Ready and Tradesmen International are two of the bigger ones. Also check out the Building Trades Council for your county - they often have leads on projects starting up.

The whole ny unemployment system is a joke 🤡 26 weeks in a state with one of the highest costs of living in the country? And they wonder why people end up on other assistance programs after UI runs out. Its all connected but they act like these are separate issues.

Here's what you need to know about NY unemployment benefits duration and what to do when they run out: 1) Standard duration is indeed 26 weeks maximum for regular benefits. 2) Extension programs that existed during COVID (like PEUC and EB) have all expired. 3) Your benefit year lasts 52 weeks from when you first filed, but you only get payments for a maximum of 26 weeks within that year. 4) Options when benefits are exhausted: - Apply for other assistance programs (SNAP/food stamps) - Check eligibility for rent assistance programs - Consider training programs (599 program can sometimes extend benefits) - Look into local workforce development programs - Consider temp work or gig work to bridge the gap 5) If you need to speak with an agent about your options (which I highly recommend), use claimyr.com to get through the phone system. It's the only reliable way to actually reach someone who can help. 6) Start planning NOW for what happens when benefits run out - don't wait until the last minute. The system is unfortunately designed with the assumption that 26 weeks is enough time to find new employment, which isn't always the case, especially in seasonal industries like construction. Starting your preparation early is key.

This is incredibly helpful, thank you! I'll definitely check out that 599 program and try to get through to an agent using claimyr.

This comment should be pinned at the top honestly. Most comprehensive answer here.

No offense but have u tried just getting a job in a different industry temporarily? I was in hospitality when covid hit, benefits ran out, I took a warehouse job I hated for 8 months until my industry recovered. Sometimes u gotta do what u gotta do, sitting around waiting for construction to pick up in spring ain't gonna pay the bills 🤷‍♀️

0 coins

I've applied to some other jobs but no luck yet. You're right though, I might need to cast a wider net. What kind of warehouse job did you get?

0 coins

Amazon was hiring like crazy when I needed work. The work sucked but the pay was decent and they hired me literally 2 days after I applied. Just an option to consider.

0 coins

my benefits ran out after 26 weeks and i had to move back in with my parents at 38 years old. this system is broken af. good luck dude.

0 coins

The 26 weeks is a hard limit unfortunately. What I did was take a bunch of gig work through TaskRabbit doing handyman stuff. If you've got construction skills, you can probably make decent money there while looking for permanent work. Just make sure to set aside money for taxes cause they don't withhold.

0 coins

That's actually a really good idea. I do have skills I could use for side work. How much were you able to make doing that?

0 coins

It varied a lot but I averaged about $25-30/hr for basic handyman work. Assembly jobs (furniture etc) paid the best for the least effort. Just create a good profile with pictures of your work.

0 coins

Quick question – what happens if you find work but then get laid off again before your benefit year ends? Can you reopen your claim and use the remaining weeks?

0 coins

Yes, if you reopen within the same benefit year, you can collect any remaining weeks from your original 26. But once you hit 26 total weeks paid, you're done until you qualify for a new benefit year.

0 coins

Thanks for clarifying! I've been on and off UI and was never 100% sure how this worked.

0 coins

ny unemployment is the most frustrating system ever. took me 7 weeks to get my first payment because of "verification issues" and now I'm supposed to just be grateful for the 26 weeks they give me? what a joke

0 coins

i think im the only person here with some good news lol. yes its 26 weeks BUT if you work part time during those weeks and report earnings, those weeks where you get reduced benefits don't fully count against your 26. i stretched my claim to almost 9 months doing this. just something to consider.

0 coins

That's actually really smart. How much were you working each week to make this stretch?

0 coins

I picked up 2-3 shifts a week at a grocery store. Made just enough to reduce my benefits but not eliminate them completely. When you certify, they only count it as a partial week against your total.

0 coins

Everyone saying 26 weeks is right, but no one talking about the stupidly low maximum benefit amount in NY 🙄 even if you made good money before, the max benefit is way below what most people need to survive in NY. The whole system needs an overhaul.

0 coins

FOR REAL!!! I was making decent money before layoff and my benefit barely covers half my rent. Its a joke.

0 coins

preach 👏 max benefit hasn't kept up with inflation AT ALL
